(NEWTON) In state news, the issue of forced union fees is still up for debate. Labor policy analysts at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a free-market public policy think tank, expects the U.S. Supreme Court will rule in favor of an Illinois Department of Healthcare & Family Services’ employee who is challenging forced union fees to the AFSCME union. The child support specialist says his First Amendment rights are being violated by being forced to associate with a union that he doesn’t agree with. Union officials say the worker simply wants a free ride. With oral arguments next month, a ruling is expected later this summer.
