The meeting was the first in what Governor Bruce Rauner and lawmakers expect to be a series of discussions during this legislative this session on a comprehensive approach to public safety. While the meeting dealt with critical issues such as gun trafficking, school safety, mental health, and crime prevention, it centered specifically on gun issues and school safety. The next meeting will be held later this summer.

(CARBONDALE) Governor Bruce Rauner last Friday joined athletes and volunteers for the Special Olympics Illinois 50th Anniversary Kickoff celebrations at the Touch of Nature Environmental Center down in Carbondale. It was in the 1950’s that Southern Illinois Dr. William H. Freeberg, an early leader in therapeutic recreation, started a camp for children and adults with intellectual disabilities at what later became the Touch of Nature Environmental Center. Dr. Freeberg also served as a consultant to help plan the first Special Olympics, which was held at Chicago’s Soldier Field in July of 1968.
