(OLNEY/NEWTON) Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary statewide total of 13,500 wild turkeys during the 2018 Spring Turkey Season, including the Youth Season. This spring’s total harvest is 14% less than the 15,720 birds taken a year ago in 2017. The turkey harvest in our ten area counties this year was 1,213 birds, which was 16% lower than the regional ten county harvest from a year ago. This year’s turkey harvest had lower numbers in every local county compared to the 2017 numbers. Wayne County had the highest harvest total this spring at 260 turkeys (57 fewer birds then last year), followed by Clay County at 189 (-30), Crawford County at 178 (-32), and Lawrence County at 129 (-12). Jasper County had the fifth highest turkey harvest at 104 (-36) birds, followed by Effingham County at 99 (-18), Richland County at 90 (-23), Edwards County at 83 (-2), Cumberland County at 44 (-4), and Wabash County at 37 (-19).
