(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Department of Public Health has been alerted to additional cases of severe bleeding in individuals who used synthetic cannabinoids, commonly called Spice, K2, and/or fake pot. The majority of new cases are among Winnebago County residents, plus Wisconsin has also recently reported cases. More than 160 people in 15 Illinois counties have experienced health problems due to the use of rat poison in the synthetic drugs. The IDPH and state authorities are continuing their related investigations.
(SPRINGFIELD) The summer housing market is in full swing with homes selling quickly and at higher prices last month, even as tight inventory drove sales slightly lower in May. According to Illinois Realtors, the statewide home sales in May 2018 totaled 16,937 units, down 2.7% from last year. Illinois’ median price last month was $215,000, up 3.4% from May 2017. Thirty-four (34) Illinois counties reported sales gains for May 2018 over previous-year numbers including Champaign and Madison Counties.
(SPRINGFIELD) Illinois voters have chosen the state’s top authors as part of the Illinois Top 200 Project. Oak Park native Ernest Hemingway led the voting, followed by Galesburg’s poet Carl Sandburg and Waukegan’s Ray Bradbury. Two poets rounded out the top five, including Gwendolyn Brooks and Edgar Lee Masters. The remaining picks were Edgar Rice Burroughs, Lorraine Hansberry, Saul Bellow, Richard Wright, and Sandra Cisneros. Voting in the next category, “heartbreaking moments,” is now underway online at www.IllinoisTop200.com. The project lets Illinoisans vote every two weeks on the most inspiring picks in 20 different categories leading up to Illinois’ 200th birthday to be celebrated on December 3rd.
