the Lady Cubs lost the 8th grade match at Carmi in two close games, 19-25, 21-25
* Olney’s top players were Paige Troyer, Madison Michels, and Logan Kauble
Olney won the 7th grade match in two games, 25-23, 25-17
Olney also won the 6th grade match in three games, 22-25, 25-16, 15-9
the Lady Cubs return to the ERMS court this evening as they host Albion here in Olney

* Class 2A Semi-Final  :  Bloomington Central Catholic plays Kankakee McNamara at 6:30 tonight

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Athletic Association will be sponsoring a Coed Kickball Tournament at the Noble Ball Fields just north of the former West Richland High School on Saturday, March 21st – it’s three games guaranteed per team with a $125 per team entry fee – it’s for players age 13 and older and each team must have at least four girl members – for 12 teams taking part, first place gets $200 cash and second place receives $100 cash – to enter in advance or for more information, call Julia at 618-204-1958

 

(NEWTON)  a Softball Skills Camp will be held Saturday, March 14th, in the Newton Community High School Gym for area girls – the All Skills Camp for girls in 2nd thru 6th grades will run that morning from 8:30 to 11:30 – then the Pitching & Catching Camp for girls in 3rd thru 6th grades will run that afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 – the cost is $20 for the Skills Camp, $15 for the Pitching & Catching Camp, or $30 for those that signup for both – however, the afternoon camp is limited to the first 15 pitchers that sign up – all girls must bring tennis shoes and their gloves (bats optional) – with check in at 8:00 that morning, advance sign up is recommended for both camps – call Coach Sara Beam if any questions, at 618-553-7556

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Basketball last night – Olney finished its regular season with two losses
the Tigers lost at Mattoon, falling to the host Green Wave, 67-61
*  Derek Deimel led Olney with a double / double by scoring 17 points and pulling down 12 rebounds
*  Tate Nohren had 14 points, Gage Miller had 13 points, and Tanner Stoltz had 10 points
the varsity Tigers finish the regular season at 11&13 on the year, tied for third in the LIC at 6&3
Mattoon also won the junior varsity game, 54-48
the Tigers now prepare for the Effingham Class 3A Regional as they play Salem next Monday night

(OLNEY)  the IHSA State Wrestling Tournaments finished up over the weekend in Champaign
the lone wrestler from East Richland High School represented Olney well in the 220 pound weight class
*  Zach Shoulders lost his first match to then undefeated Tristun Reeves of El Paso on a 7-3 decision
*  the ERHS junior then won a consolation match on a fall in 4:20 over Kyal Davis of Wilmington
*  Shoulders was then eliminated by Jake Frost of Coal City in consolation quarter-final match
*  Zach finished with 1 win and 2 losses, but finished in the top 8 state wrestlers in the 220 pound class
*  the now two-time state qualifier finishes the year with an overall record of  31 wins and 13 losses
congratulations to Zach Shoulders and all the Olney Tiger Wrestlers on a job well done this year

 

(OLNEY)  here’s how other downstate wrestlers did in the IHSA Class 1A State Wrestling Tournament
*  Shelbyville’s Adam Hudson (43-0) won four in a row to win the 160 pound championship
*  Shelbyville’s Wyatt Fox (47-4) won four and lost one to finish 3rd in the 152 pound class 
*  Shelbyville’s Jared Finley (40-8) won three and lost two to finish 4th in the 145 pound class
*  Mt. Carmel’s Andrew Wise (38-6) won three and lost two to finish 6th in the 220 pound weight class
*  Cumberland’s Blaine Yocum (35-7) won two and lost two to finish in the 145 pound top eight
*  Lawrenceville’s Logan McGuire (29-11) won one and lost two in the 170 pound class

(NEWTON)  in Men’s Big Ten College Basketball from over the weekend
there were two games played Saturday
*  Wisconsin beat Minnesota, 63-53
*  Northwestern beat Penn State, 60-39
there were four games played yesterday
*  Indiana beat Rutgers, 84-54
*  Michigan beat Ohio State, 64-57
*  Iowa beat Nebraska, 74-46
*  Michigan State beat Illinois, 60-53 as the Fighting Illini fall back to 17&10 overall
   *  Illinois, now at 7&7 in the Big Ten, are back in action Wednesday night at Iowa
there are no games on the schedule for this Monday

 

(OLNEY)  in Men’s Junior College Basketball yesterday – OCC had a big win on the road
the OCC Blue Knights came from behind to beat Shawnee, 57-55
*  sophomore Blue Knight Dimitri Reaves led all scorers with 23 points 
*  the Blue Knights improve to 7&21 on the year, now 2&16 in Region play
the OCC men are back in GRAC action this Wednesday night at 7:30 at Southwestern Illinois

 

(OLNEY)  in Women’s Junior College Basketball yesterday – OCC also won on the road
the OCC Lady Knights beat Shawnee, 84-64
*  sophomore Lady Knight center Kelsey Pilant led all scorers with 17 points
*  the OCC ladies improve to 9&17 on the year, now 6&11 in Region action
the Lady Knights return to play this Wednesday evening at Southwestern Illinois at 5:30

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Basketball from over the weekend – Olney picks up two wins
the Tigers beat Edwards County on the road Friday night, 50-30 finishing up the LIC schedule
then on Saturday night, during senior night, the Tigers beat Salem, 52-47
*  the Tigers’ top scorers were Hunter Wyatt and Tate Nohren with 14 points each against Salem
*  the Tigers’ top scorers against Edwards County were also Wyatt and Nohren with 12 points each 
*  in JV action  :  Edwards County beat Olney, 46-34  :  Olney beat Salem, 41-40
the Tigers return to action tomorrow night traveling to Mattoon to play the Green Wave

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys High School Basketball from Saturday night – Newton split two at home
the Eagles lost the varsity game to Casey-Westfield, 66-57
*  Brock Mammoser led Newton with 24 points
Newton won the junior varsity game, 61-47
the Eagles begin postseason action at the Lawrenceville Regional tomorrow night
