(OLNEY)  in the National Hockey League playoffs yesterday
the St. Louis Blues tied up their best-of-seven series against the Stars in Dallas with a 4-3 overtime win
with the series now tied at one game each, game three tomorrow night will be in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball over the weekend
the Cardinals dropped three games in a row to the Washington Nationals – the Birds have lost four straight
the Cardinals are back at home tonight with the first of four against the Philadelphia Phillies

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Softball on Friday – OCC won its playoff series to advance to the Final Four
the 4th-seeded Lady Knights won both of their games against 5th-seeded John A. Logan, 1-0 and 3-2
* OCC improves to 41-22-1 on the year and advance to play top-seeded Wabash Valley this coming Friday
here’s a look at the other Friday results in first round action of the Region 24 / District P Tournament
* top-seeded Wabash Valley took two from 8th-seeded Frontier Community College, 4-3 (9) and 12-3 (5)
* 2nd-seeded Lake Land won two against Kaskaskia, 5-1 and 12-4
* 3rd-seeded Rend Lake took two from 6th-seeded Southeastern Illinois, 11-3 and 5-3
the Region 24 Tournament is Friday and Saturday at Kaskaskia College, west of Centralia

the Blue Knights lost to the host Volunteers in Carterville, 4-2
* the OCC men are now 39-15 on the year, now at 15-10 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
the Blue Knights are scheduled to play two games today back at John A. Logan at 1:00 and 4:00
the Region 24 Tournament will be played this coming Saturday and Sunday involving the top eight teams

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Soccer last week – Olney was in action at the Centralia Tournament
* the Lady Tigers lost to Mt. Vernon, 2-0 – great play by Olney’s goalie Robin Volk and Aaron Bromm
* the Lady Tigers lost to Father McGivney Catholic, 2-0 – good play by Stephanie Shan and Faith Stallard
the Olney Soccer ladies are back in action this evening with a rescheduled match at home against Herrin
it will be “senior night” this evening on Ed Webber Field out at Olney Central College – all are invited

Mattoon won the event by beating out second place Shelbyville, 116 to 98 – Robinson was third at 74
the host Eagles finished fourth with 54 points, followed by Vandalia with 51 and Effingham with 29
then it was Red Hill (24), Olney (21), Charleston (20), Teutopolis (11), and Palestine-Hutsonville (16)
then Altamont (13), St. Anthony (11), Lawrenceville (6), and Cowden-Herrick (2)
* the fourth place Newton Eagles had fourteen top ten finishes
Newton won three of the eighteen events
* Mitch Bierman won the 100 meter dash
* Joe Stone won the 800 meter run

Mt. Carmel won the five team event by beating second place Carmi, 163 to 137
Olney finished in third place with 116 points, followed by Fairfield with 63 points and Flora with 36 points
* the third place Lady Cubs had seven top two finishes in the meet
Olney won two of the thirteen varsity events
* Tara Hughes won the high jump with a personal best 5 foot jump
* Brittany Black won the shot put
Olney had five 2nd place finishes
* Allison Harness, Carley Greenwood, Daelyn Wood, and Anna Blank in the 1600 meter relay

(OLNEY)  in National Hockey League Stanley Cup Playoff Action last night
the St. Louis Blues dropped game 1 of the seven game series to the host Dallas Stars, 2-1
game two of the series is Sunday afternoon back in Dallas

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Softball yesterday – the OCC Lady Knights won their first round series
the Lady Knights took two from visiting John A. Logan, 1-0 and 3-2
* the Lady Knights improve to 41-22-1 on the year – they finished fourth in the GRAC with a 19-14-1 mark
the OCC Ladies now advance to the Region 24 Final Four Tournament next weekend at Kaskaskia College

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Tennis yesterday – Olney won a non-conference match at home the Tigers beat visiting Salem, 6 to 3 as Olney won the top five singles matches, each in two sets
* Connor Walker won the #1 singles match
* Austin Urfer won the #2 singles match
* Tanner Hendrickson won the #3 singles match
* Kye Stallard won the #4 singles match
* Marshall King won the #5 singles match
Olney won one of the three doubles matches
* Brock VanBlaricum and Peyton Williams teamed up to win the #1 doubles match in two sets
Olney split the two junior varsity matches, by winning one and losing one
now at 9-1 on the year, still 2-0 in the LIC, the Tennis Tigers play again next week

the Tigers won at Lawrenceville, 7-5 by scoring three runs in the top of the 7th inning
visiting Olney outhit the host Indians, 9 to 7
* Olney's Dylan Hires got the complete game win by striking out eight
* Olney was led by Mason Kocher with a home run, double, and three RBI
* Tanner Hout also with two hits – Jacob Greifzu and Trey Puckett each had an RBI hit
the Tigers improve to 9-6 on the year, now 4-1 in the Little Illini Conference
Olney is back in conference action next Monday when they host the Flora Wolves

the Eagles shutout Robinson, 12-0 as Newton outhit the visiting Maroons, 11 to 2
* Newton's Mitch Jansen got the five inning win allowing no runs with four strikeouts
* Brock Mammoser led Newton with a double, single, and two RBI
* Luke Geier and John Grunloh each had two hits and one RBI
the Eagles improve to 11-4 on the year, still undefeated in the LIC at 5-0

* Abby Frohning led Newton with a game-high three hits, including two triples and one RBI

* Kristen Hardiek won the game with 6-plus innings of work with eight strikeouts

(OLNEY)  the 2016 Olney Junior Pro Football signup begins this coming Saturday, April 30th, from 11:30 to 3:00, at the Baseball Pavilion in Olney’s Musgrove Park – all Richland County students entering 3rd thru 8th grades this fall are eligible to play – it’s also a chance to meet some of the 2016 coaching staff – there is a $40 per player registration fee – it’s important for all interested to sign up this Saturday to help the League with its purchasing and insurance purposes – if questions, call Julia, at  443-618-1859  or go to Facebook

 

(NEWTON)  Newton American Legion Post #20 will host a fundraising “pork burger sale” this Saturday to raise funds to support the Legion baseball teams – serving from 11:00 to 2:00 at the Post Home in Newton

while the Stars have the home ice advantage, the Blues actually beat the Stars four out of five times this year
game two will also be in Dallas Sunday afternoon followed by game three next Tuesday night in St. Louis

the Cardinals beat the Diamondbacks, 8-2 to even up the series at one game apiece
* teams that won last night were the Cubs, White Sox, Pirates, and Twins
* those that lost were the Royals, Reds, Brewers, Indians, Astros, Tigers, and Braves
the Cardinals are back against the D-backs tonight in Arizona

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Track on Monday – Olney hosted a seven team event at RCHS
Mattoon won the meet by beating out second place Salem, 150 to 93
Newton and Robinson tied for third place, each with 87 points – Olney finished fifth with 75 points
then it was Charleston in sixth place at 68 points and Fairfield was last with 57 points
* the fifth place Olney Tigers had seven top three finishes in the event
Olney only one of the twenty-one events
* Ben Lynch won the pole vault and tied a RCHS school record with his mark of thirteen feet & five inches
Olney had two 2nd place finishes
* Derek Deimel in the shot put
* Peyton Blanton, Jordan Duenas, Chase Williams, and Dillion Haney in the fresh/soph 800 meter relay
Olney had four 3rd place finishes
* Michael DeMeyer in the 1600 meter run
* Ryan Shipley in the high jump
* Dillion Haney, Dakota Holder, Chase Williams, and Dalton Mitchell in the 800 meter shuttle relay
* Cole Simpson, Owen Powell, Tyler Hughes, and Chase Williams in the fresh/soph 1600 meter relay

Newton won the event by beating out second place Teutopolis by only three points, 65 to 62
the host Lady Maroons finished in a close third place, only four points back at 58
* Newton had eighteen top three finishes in the meet
the Lady Eagles won six of the eighteen varsity events
* Sarah Carr won both the 800 meter run and the 1600 meter run
* Alex Haarman won the 100 meter dash
* Taylor Johnson won the 400 meter dash
* Courtney Hadra won the discus throw
* Lauren Probst won the 300 meter hurdles
Newton had seven 2nd’s and five 3rd’s as well

while shortened by rain, Centralia won the meet by beating second place Olney, 56 to 42
the host Flora Pups finished in third place with 37 points - Carmi was fourth with 32 points
* the Cubs had eight top three finishes with only nine of the thirteen events ran before the rain came
Olney won two of the events
* Jace Greenwood, Seth Ingram, Hunter Perry, and Colton Hayes won the 800 meter relay
* Braeden Burgener won the pole vault
Olney had three 2nd place finishes
* Trevor Zuber in the 100 meter low hurdles
* Jonas Burckhartt in the pole vault

the two teams are scheduled to play today in Newton, weather permitting
* the Olney Tigers set alone in third place at 3-1
* Robinson and Paris are tied for fourth place, each at 2-2
* Lawrenceville sits alone in fifth place at 2-3
* Edwards County, Casey-Westfield, and Marshall are tied for sixth place, each at 1-3
* Red Hill sits in 10th place at 1-4
