the Cardinals lost to the Nationals, 4-3 but did win the series, two games to one
elsewhere  :  Reds beat Cubs, 7-4  :  Brewers beat Pirates, 9-4  :  Twins beat White Sox, 3-0
Royals beat Tigers, 12-1  :  Blue Jays beat Indians, 5-1  :  Mariners beat Astros, 8-3
Marlins beat Braves, 7-3  :  Rangers beat Padres in 10, 4-3
*  it’s a very shortened 6-game schedule on this Thursday
the Cardinals have the day & night off before they start a weekend series against the Pirates tomorrow night

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Golf yesterday – Olney picked up a win at home
the Tigers beat visiting Marshall, 184 to 211
* the Co-Match Medalists for Olney were Tanner Hout and Jake Kowa, each with a 7 over par 43
* Olney’s Luke Shan was just one stroke back with a round of 44, plus Randy Goodman shot a 54
the Olney golfers are now 5&3 on the year, now at 3&2 in the Little Illini Conference
the Tigers are back on the links tomorrow to host the Olney Invitational at the Richland Country Club

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Cross Country on Tuesday – Newton ran at Effingham
the host Lady Hearts won the girls race, beating out second place Newton, 29 to 51
Marshall finished third with 60 points and Casey-Westfield was fourth at 88
* Newton’s top runner was freshman Sarah Carr finishing in 3rd place – teammate Veronica Ochs was 7th
* Newton’s Taylor Brown was 12th, Mya Kuhn was 14th, and Natalie Woods was 15th
on the boys side, visiting Marshall won the event by beating the host Hearts, 31 to 47
the Newton Eagles finished in a close third place with 55 points
* Newton’s top runner was Collin Harris finishing in 5th – teammate Crayton Chestnut was 7th
* also for Newton – Michael Koebele was 8th and Zach Huschle was 12th
the Newton runners are back on the course today hosting Cumberland and Oblong

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior League Football Saturday – Olney lost its 3rd/4th grade game
here’s a look at the top players and statistics from the Olney loss against Flora, 18-0
the Junior Tigers were held to only 66 yards on 21 carries and 1 pass completion for 8 yards
defensively, Olney’s younger squad had 77 total tackles and 1 fumble recovery
* Jashaun McKinnley had 4 tackles – Tristan Kimbrough had 3 tackles & the fumble recovery
* Braden Mullins and Lane Kilgore also had 3 tackles each
* offensively, Derrik Kramer ran for 45 yards on 7 carries – Jacob Beard had 14 yards on 6 carries
* Kramer’s lone pass completion was to Brayden Beard for 8 yards
at 2&1 on the year, the Olney 3rd/4th  graders will be in action this Saturday afternoon at Flora

 

(NEWTON)  in College Football news with the nationwide season to get started this weekend
Fighting Illini Football opens the 2015 season under the lights tomorrow night
all Illinois fans can help create an “Orange Out” at Memorial Stadium by wearing orange to the game
with an 8:00 kickoff, the Illini with host Kent State, which will be televised on the Big Ten Network
Friday’s game marks the grand opening of the Grange Grove tailgating area just west of Memorial Stadium
plus Illinois’ first “Illini Walk” will go thru Grange Grove after the team arrives at the Stadium at 5:30

(OLNEY)  in High School Cross Country yesterday – the Olney runners did well in Effingham
the Lady Tigers won their 5-team race, beating second place Teutopolis, 30 to 46
host Effingham St. Anthony was a point back in third with 47 points – then Lawrenceville and Robinson
* Olney’s Holly Stallard and Cameron Hough finished back to back, in 1st and 2nd places, 5 seconds apart
* Faith Stallard was 5th, Kylar Craig was 8th, Alicia Guzman was 19th, and Gracie Julian was 20th
in the boys race, Olney finished in third place with 60 points, just one point back of second place Teutopolis
Robinson won the race with 32 points – Lawrenceville was fourth and host St. Anthony was fifth
* Olney’s Michael DeMeyer was 2nd overall, followed by brother Nathan DeMeyer in 8th place
* Olney’s Tyler Hughes was 12th, Cole Simpson was 20th, and Nathaniel Troester as 22nd
Olney’s next scheduled meet tomorrow at Lawrenceville has been cancelled due to the heat

the Lady Tigers fell to Casey-Westfield, 6 to 3
Olney won two on the six singles matches
* Nicole Shan won the #1 singles match in two sets
* Rachel Woods won the #3 singles match in two sets
Olney won one of the three doubles matches
* Nicole Shan and Audrey Jensen teamed up to win the #1 doubles match in two sets
Olney won two of the three junior varsity matches
at 1&1 on the year, now 0&1 in the LIC, the Lady Tigers will host Newton tomorrow

the Tigers fell short to Flora by 13 strokes, 177 to 164
* the Match Medalist was Flora’s Nick Trotter with a three over 38
* Olney’s best score came from Tanner Hout with four over par 39
* Olney’s Jake Kowa shot a 43, Luke Shan at 47, and Randy Goodman a 48
at 4&3 overall, now 2&2 in the LIC, the Tigers are back on the links today at the Richland Country Club

Marshall finished third among six teams in Danville
* Bismarck-Henning was first, followed by Westville
* after the Lions were Salt Fork, Hoopston, and Iroquois in 4th, 5th, and 6th
Oblong lost a tough one stroke match to Paris, 193 to 192
* the Match Medalist was Oblong’s Gage Kidwell with a round of 44
and it was Lawrenceville / Red Hill over Robinson, 158 to 170

Marshall beat Martinsville, winning both the varsity and junior varsity matches in three games each
* the Lady Lions are now 3&4 on the year
Edwards County lost to Fairfield in the varsity match in three games
* the Lady Lions won both the junior varsity and freshmen matches over Fairfield, both in three games

Clay City took two matches from Grayville
* Lady Wolves won both the varsity match and junior varsity match in two games
now at 3&0 on the year, 2&0 in the MTC, Clay City will host Christ Our Rock tomorrow night

Teutopolis took two games from Altamont
* the Wooden Shoes won the first game, 4-1 outhitting the Indians, 9 to 4
* Teutopolis won game two, 12-4 outhitting Altamont, 9 to 7
the Wooden Shoes are now 6&0 in fall ball this year

the Jasper County runners did well
* the boys finished in 5th place out of eleven total teams
* the girls finished in 6th place out of ten total teams
the Jasper County runners will be back in action tomorrow at the Teutopolis Relays

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior League Football Saturday – Olney won the 5th/6th grade game
here’s a look at the top players and statistics from the 16-0 win at Newton
the Junior Tigers ran for 239 yards on 36 carries by 9 different running backs – no yards thru the air
defensively, Olney’s middle squad had 27 total tackles by 14 different players
* Troy McDannel, Kaden Gertch, Zachariah Wease, and Ian Cox had 3 tackles each
* also with 3 tackles each were Carter Beard and Braedon Burgener
* on the ground offensively, Burgener gained 83 yards on 9 carries
* Zachariah Wease gained 66 yards on 6 carries
* Kelby Steber had 34 yards on 7 carries and a touchdown
* Carter Beard had 12 yards on 6 carries & a touchdown – Karson Burton carried the ball once for 17 yards

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer from the weekend Red & Gold Tournament in Charleston
the Olney Tigers played well with a win over Effingham, 2-1
* goals were scored by Treston Stanley and Isaac Pampe with an assist from Austin Urfer
* Olney had some great defense by Gavin Lathrop and Ben Lynch
the Tigers then played host Charleston to a 1-1 tie
* Olney’s lone goal came from Connor Walker, assisted by Kye Stallard
the junior varsity Tigers also played Charleston to a 1-1 tie
* Olney’s goal by Trey Nosek, assisted again by Kye Stallard
Olney’s three Varsity All Tournament Players were Austin Urfer, Brock VanBlaricum, and Treston Stanley

* Blake Mitchell led Olney’s defense with 5 tackles – Quinn Miller had 4 tackles on the night
* Ben Allen and Cameron Gardner each had 3 tackles and 1 fumble recovery
* offensively, Kaleb Foster carried the ball only twice, running for 66 yards and a touchdown
* Luke Allen ran for 48 yards on 5 carries with a touchdown
* Hunter Perry scored a touchdown on a 44 yard run – Jace Greenwood scored on a 27 yard run
* Jayden Fleming scored two touchdowns, gaining 27 yards on 3 carries

* and to finish pool play, Newton beat Robinson in three games, 17-25, 25-17, 25-15
* Newton then won the championship match over Bement in two games, 25-19, 25-21
* Newton’s top players included Allie Kline, Grace Hartrich, and Taylor Johnson

(OLNEY)  a fundraising Golf Scramble is set for this morning at the Clay County Country Club, just west of Flora, in Charley Brown Park, sponsored by the Clay City Volunteer Fire Department – all proceeds will benefit the Red & Shirley Ausbrook Scholarship Fund at Clay City High School – it’s registration at 8:00 and a shotgun shot at 9:00, followed by a free lunch – the cost is only $50 per player with either four or six teams – last year four scholarships were provided to CCHS graduates for college

 

(OLNEY)  the 1st Annual Father Jerry 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run is today, with the start and finish at the Musgrove Aquatic Center, in Olney’s Musgrove Park – it’s $25 per person for the 5K events and $15 per person for the 1 Mile Fun Run – family discounts for multiple members are available – it’s late registration at 7:00 that morning, with start time at 8:00 – all in memory of Father Jerry Wirth – to register online or to print entry forms, logon at  www.stjoeolney.com  – all are invited
