the Cardinals dropped the rubber game of the series to the Mets, 10-6
* the Midwestern teams that won were the White Sox, Royals, Pirates, Tigers, Rangers, and Braves
* the Midwestern teams that lost were the Brewers, Indians, and Twins
* the Midwestern teams that were idle Thursday were the Cubs and Reds
the Cardinals start up a weekend series tonight in St. Louis – it’s the first of three against the Oakland A’s

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer yesterday at the Red & Gold Invitational at Charleston
the Olney Tigers won their first match of the year by defeating Effingham, 7-0
* Josiah Burckhartt led Olney with four goals – Trey Nosek scored two and Seth Ingram had one
* Kye Stallard had two of Olney’s five assists – Trey Nosek, Jacob Henry, & Weston Deshon each had one
* Isaac Pampe had three saves in the goal – plus some great play by Jacob McVicker and Gavin Lathrop
the Olney Tigers also won their JV match, by beating Effingham, 7-2
* Isaac Bradley scored two of the Olney goals
* other goals made by Jaden Burckhartt, Caleb Watkins, Seth Kocher, Mac Alexander, & Reid Snyder
the Olney teams are off today, but return to action tomorrow
* the Varsity Tigers play Newton at 9:00 in the morning, then Centralia at 3:00 in the afternoon
* the JV Tigers will play Mattoon at 10:30 tomorrow morning and Centralia at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon

the Newton Eagles open the season with a 1-1 tie with Centralia
* the lone Newton goal was scored by Ben Carr, with the assist from Sean Brody
* Newton goalie Gavin Fehrenbacher had eight keeper saves on eleven Centralia shots
* also outstanding defense for Newton by Ben Britton and Giuseppe Cucinella
the Eagles are off today, but return to action tomorrow

Olney also won the JV match in two sets, 25-16, 25-10
the Lady Tigers split the Fresh/Soph match by winning one and losing one

* Jasper County’s winning pitcher was Whitney Zumbahlen with eight strikeouts
* the leading hitter was Megan Kuhl with three hits, four RBI, and three runs scored
* Ava Kessler had three hits and three runs scored for Jasper County
now at 6-5, Newton plays tomorrow in the Oblong Tournament with games at 10:30 and 12 noon

* the Marshall Lions are on the road to Flora to open up against the Wolves on Dancey Field
* and Casey-Westfield will host the Tigers from Paris up in Clark County
the remaining LIC team will be in non-conference action tomorrow

(OLNEY)  in High School Golf yesterday at the Richland Country Club in Olney
visiting Charleston won a four-team match by beating out second place Teutopolis, 157 to 172
* the Match Medalist was Teutopolis’ Christian Deters with an even par 36 on RCC’s back nine holes
the host Tigers finished in third place by beating out Fairfield, 192 to 218
* Coen McDowell led Olney with an eight over par round of 44, followed by Randy Goodman with a 46
* rounding out the top four for Olney were Luke Shan with a 49 and Ryan Tolliver with a 53
the Tigers are now 1-4 on the season, but winless so far in LIC action at 0-2
Olney is back on the links next Tuesday at the Clay County Country Club, just west of Flora

* offensively, the Junior Tigers rushed for 133 yards on 18 carries and completed one pass for 20 yards
* Brandon Mullins scored two touchdowns, rushing for 56 yards on only 6 carries
* Dirks Weiler had a touchdown while running for 41 yards on 3 carries
* Jacob Beard had 5 carries while gaining 36 yards

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Cross Country yesterday at the Tom Wickham Memorial Invitational
Olney won the annual 8-team event down in Fairfield by beating out second place Lawrenceville, 27 to 52
Hamilton County was third with 96 points, followed by Mt. Carmel at 105 and host Fairfield with 155
Newton finished sixth with 165 points, followed by North Clay at 199 and Webber Township

* Cameron Hough won the race, finishing first
* Tristen Payne was fifth
* Lauren Eagleson was sixth
* Haven Doll was seventh

* Owen Powell finished fifth

* Olney’s best round was a 51 shot by Coen McDowell – Luke Shan shot a 53

(OLNEY)  the Olney Junior Football League has fundraising raffle tickets on sale from all players and parents with four guns to be given away – the drawing will be held during the final day of home games in Olney, on Saturday, September 24th – the tickets are $5 each or four for $20 and get one free – tickets can also be purchased at the home games in Olney – all proceeds will help purchase equipment & uniforms

 

(OLNEY)  it’s the Annual Olney Bicycle Classic coming up on Saturday, September 10th, in the Olney City Park  :  it all begins with the Richland County Challenge Ride at 8:00 with registration by 7:45 – the $20 fee increases to $25 if signup after September 1st  :  the TrustBank Family Ride is at 9:30 with registration by 9:15  :  Pacific Cycle presents bicycle stunts by Chris Clark at 11:00  :  then the AmTryke Ride for children at 11:30 with registration by 11:15  :  the Kids Races, for ages 2 thru 14, start at 11:50 with registration by 11:30 and trophies to the top three in each age category  :  most registrants get a t-shirt – registration forms & more details are online at  www.olneychamber.com  or on the Chamber’s Facebook Event Page

 

(OLNEY)  get ready for our Freedom 92.9 / St. Jude Golf Classic, set for Friday, September 9th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney, with all proceeds to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital – it’s a four person scramble with registration from 11:00 to 1:00, lunch from 11:30 to 12:30, and a shotgun start at 1:00 – the cost is only $60 per person – to signup, or for details, call Mike or Deb, at  618-393-2156

 

(NEWTON/ROBINSON)  Lincoln Trail College will have its Annual Athletics Golf Outing this Friday, August 26th, at the Quail Creek Country Club, in Crawford County – starting at 11:00 that morning, the outing includes 18 holes of golf with a golf cart, plus soft drinks & water available on the course, along with hamburgers & hot dogs – not to mention a meal following the round of golf featuring barbecue chicken – the cost is $100 per person or $400 for a team of four – meal only tickets are $15 each – proceeds go to help the student-athletes at Lincoln Trail College near Robinson – for more, logon at  www.ltcathletics.com

 

(NEWTON)  a note to Newton Eagle football fans – last year’s reserved football seat ticket holders now have a chance to retain their reserved seats by calling the Newton Community High School office at  618-783-2303  during regular office hours – the general public may purchase reserved football seats from 8:00 to 12:00 noon on this Tuesday morning – NCHS sports passes are available for all regular season sports as well – call or stop by the Newton Community High School office during regular hours for more information

(OLNEY)  as the 2016 Summer Olympics ended yesterday in Rio, the United States won the most medals
American athletes finished with a total of 121 medals, leading all of the 204 other countries involved
* America captured 46 gold medals, 37 silver medals, and 38 bronze medals, the most in all categories
* China had the Olympics’ second most medals at 70, followed by Great Britain with 67 and Russia with 56
* then Germany and France each with 42, Japan had 41, Australia had 29, Italy with 28, and Canada with 22 * Korea had 21, the Netherlands and Brazil had 19 each, then New Zealand and Kazakhstan each with 17

the Cardinals split two with the Phillies, losing Saturday, 4-2 but winning yesterday, 9-0
* other Midwestern teams that split two were the Cubs, Reds, Brewers, Indians, Tigers, and Braves
* the Midwestern teams that won two were the White Sox, Royals, and Astros
* the Midwestern teams that lost two were the Pirates, Twins, and Rangers
the Cardinals are off today before they open a three game series at home against the Mets tomorrow night

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Baseball from over the weekend – Newton Jasper County won two games
the Jasper County boys beat Oblong last Friday, 9-3
* the winning pitcher was Ben Meinhart
Jasper County won again on Saturday, beating Lawrenceville Parkview, 11-1
* the winning pitcher was Jake Rice with a complete game victory
Jasper County also won last Thursday by slipping by North Clay, 14-13
* the winning pitcher was Aaron Einhorn, with Evan Schafer getting a save
* the top Jasper County hitter was Aaron Einhorn with three hits and three RBI
the Jasper County squad is now 6-2 on the season

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior League Football from this past Saturday – Olney took two of three games
* Olney dropped the 7th/8th grade game to visiting Salem, 30-6
* Olney won the 5th/6th grade game by beating Salem, 40-6
* Olney also won the 3rd/4th grade game with a win over Lawrenceville, 20-6
the Olney teams have a couple of rescheduled games from the previous weekend’s rainouts
* the Olney 5th/6th graders play tonight at Mt. Carmel with a 6:00 kickoff
* the Olney 7th/8th graders play tomorrow night at Mt. Carmel, also with a 6:00 kickoff
