(NEWTON)  Week Eight of the National Football League began last night in Denver
the Broncos used home field advantage at Mile High Stadium to beat San Diego, 35-21
thirteen games are scheduled for Sunday, with the final game of Week Eight next Monday night

 

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Girls State Tennis Tournaments began yesterday in the Chicago Suburbs
in first round doubles competition involving our local girls from East Richland High School
  *  Olney’s Audrey Jensen & Nicole Shan lost their first match to a Chatham Glenwood pair in two sets
  *  the ERHS sophomores then won a consolation round match over a Coal City pair in two sets
  *  but Jensen & Shan were eliminated a consolation second round match by a Peoria pair in two sets

  *  Salem’s Shelby Holst & Ashley West went 1&2 by losing, winning, and then eliminated
  *  Mt. Vernon’s Jade Knox & Catie Raney went 1&2 by winning, then losing back to back

(NEWTON)  in High School Volleyball last night – Newton swept two to finish its regular season
the Lady Eagles beat Paris in the varsity match in two games, 25-9 and 25-12
  *  Newton was led by Hannah Litzelman, Katelyn Hardiek, Brooke Koebele, and Taylor Johnson
the Lady Eagles also beat the junior varsity in two games – the junior varsity ends the year at 15&1
the NCHS varsity ends the regular season at 20&10 – it’s Class 2A Regional play next Tuesday at Robinson

 

(OLNEY)  the 44th Annual Illinois Marching Band Championships were last Saturday in Champaign
there were 50 marching bands from all over Illinois taking part is six different competition classes
there were thirteen marching bands in the Class 2A competition with only a few points separating each team
  *  the Olney Marching Tigers finished in a tie with Salem for 11th place
  *  Macomb won the Class 2A crown, followed by 2nd place Monticello and 3rd place Breese Mater Dei
  *  the Newton Marching Eagles finished in 5th place behind 4th place Pontiac  :  Eureka was 6th
  *  rounding out the other bands were Prairie Central, Mt. Zion, Sandwich, Hoopeston, and Pinckneyville
there were five marching bands in the Class 1A competition
  *  Oakland Tri-Valley won with 1st place, followed by Watseka in 2nd place
  *  the other teams competing were El Paso Gridley, Blue Ridge, and Ridgeview
there were eight marching bands in the Class 3A competition
  *  it was Morton coming out on top in 1st place, followed by Streator in 2nd and Highland in 3rd place
  *  Normal U High was 4th  :  Mattoon was 5th  :  Effingham was 6th  :  then Rochelle and Centralia
there were six marching bands in the Class 4 competition
  *  Bloomington was 1st  :  Washington was 2nd  :  and Champaign Central finished 3rd
  *  rounding out the other bands were Champaign Centennial, Galesburg, and Urbana
there were ten marching bands in the Class 5A competition
  *  it was A.A. Stagg High with the win  :  John Hersey High was 2nd  :  Edwardsville was 3rd
  *  the other bands were from Alton, Rock Island, Yorkville, Romeoville, Plainfield East, and Elk Grove
there were eight marching bands in the Class 6A competition
  *  Waubonese Valley was 1st  :  Downer’s Grove was 2nd  :  Minooka was 3rd  :  Neuqua Valley was 4th
  *  rounding out the other bands were Joliet West, Fremd High, Carl Sandberg, and Oak Park Forrest River the Olney Marching Tigers will be competing tomorrow at the Spooktacular Competition up in Oblong

(NEWTON)  in Girls Junior High Basketball this past Tuesday night – Jasper County won two on the road
the Junior Lady Eagles beat Flora in the 8th grade game, 29-21
  *  the varsity girls were led by Mallory Bergbower with 12 points and 26 rebounds
Newton / Jasper County also won the 7th grade game, 45-4
the Junior Lady Eagles are back in action tonight at Palestine

 

(NEWTON)  the upstate IESA State Cross Country Meets were this past Saturday in Normal
in the Girls Class 2A Meet  :  there was one girl that qualified from Newton / Jasper County
  *  out of 208 total runners, Newton’s Sara Carr finished in 148th place
  *  10 runners from Shelbyville also ran – their top runner was Ailey Mitchell in 6th place
in the Boys Class 2A Meet  :  there was one boy that qualified from Newton / Jasper County
  *  out of 206 total runners, Newton’s Cole Farley finished in 177th place
  *  9 runners from Teutopolis also ran – their top runner was Noah Probst in 21st place
in the Boys Class 1A Meet  :  there was two boys that qualified from Toledo Cumberland
  *  out of 206 total runners, Cumberland’s Kort McClellan finished in 3rd place overall
  *  the other Cumberland runner, Blake Sutherland, finished in 12th place
  *  10 runners from Effingham St. Anthony also ran – their top runner was Brian Dust in 38th place
in the Girls Class 1A Meet  :  there were 10 runners from Effingham St. Anthony that qualified
  *  out of 208 total runners, the top St. Anthony runner Katherine Slaughter, who finished in 17th place
in the Girls Class 3A Meet  :  Mattoon’s Kylie Haack finished 193rd among 215 total runners

the Lady Eagles won the girls meet, beating Robinson, 19 to 44 – Mt. Carmel was third with no score
  *  Newton’s Lexie Davidson won the race, followed by Mt. Carmel’s Madelin Jones in 2nd place
     *  by the way, Davidson’s time of 17:20 set a new school and course record yesterday – congratulations!
  *  Newton’s Emma Weber was 4th, Veronica Ochs was 5th, and Hallie Powers was 6th
  *  Newton’s Taylor Brown, Natalie Woods, and Maddie Geier were 8th, 9th, and 10th respectively
on the boys side, the Eagles finished 2nd to Robinson, 42 to 25 – Mt. Carmel was 3rd with 67 points
  *  Newton’s top runner was Collin Harris in 5th while teammate Trenton Gonzalez was 6th
  *  Newton’s Crayton Chesnut finished in 8th place, while Mike Carr was 15th

(OLNEY)  the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association was busy this past Saturday
the downstate Girls Class S State Cross Country Meet was held at Salem
  *  the Olney St. Joe Lady Wildcats finished 3rd among 36 downstate teams represented with runners
St. Bruno / Pinckneyville won the meet with 72 points  :  Nashville was 2nd at 83  :  St. Joe was 3rd at 120
rounding out the top 8 schools were Bluford, O’Fallon Baptist, Willow Grove, Field Jr. High, & Woodlawn
other notable teams  :  Wayne City was 17th  :  Allendale was 24th  :  plus Iuka and New Hebron Christian
  *  out of 190 runners, St. Joe had six girls place among the top 40 runners on the 1.86 mile course
  *  Evelyn Atkins was 17th : Haven Doll was 18th : Danielle Clodfelter was 28th : Kenzie Weiler was 29th 
  *  Tatum David was 31st : Tristen Payne was 39th : the other Lady Wildcat runner was Maci Burgener

  *  the Olney St. Joe Wildcats finished 4th among 41 downstate teams represented with runners
OLMC Herrin won the meet with 73 points  :  2nd place Steeleville had 94  :  Central City was 3rd at 155
St. Joe was 4th at 206  :  rounding out the top seven were NCOE, Selmaville,  and Summersville  
rounding out the top twelve were St. Mary’s Centralia, St. Theresa Salem, Wayne City, Odin, & Bluford
  *  out of the 196 runners, St. Joe had five boys place among the top 70 runners on the 1.86 mile course
  *  Cadin Ackman was 25th  :  Gavin Dorn was 36th  :  Carter Jensen was 48th
  *  Jarrett Doll was 59th  :  Colin Clodfelter was 70th  :  other runners were Collin Diel & Brent Hatten

Waterloo won the meet with 75 points  :  2nd place Highland was five points back with a total of 80
rounding out the top six teams were Triad, O’Fallon Carriel, O’Fallon Fulton, and Mt. Vernon
then Smithton, Marion, Salem, Herrin, Centralia, and Wesclin ahead of Olney
  *  out of the 163 runners, Olney had two girls place among the top 60 runners on the 1.8 mile course
  *  Cameron Hough was 9th overall  :  Hope Laughlin was 55th
  *  other Olney runners were Tara Hughes, Olivia Nix, Macy Piercefield, Gracie Julian, & Morgan Puckett

Triad won the meet with 59 points  :  2nd place Marion had 84 points  :  3rd place Waterloo had 88 points
O’Fallon Fulton was 4th  :  O’Fallon Carriel was 5th  :  then the Olney Cubs were 6th
rounding out the top ten were Centralia, Collinsville, West Frankfort, and Herrin
  *  out of the 162 runners, Olney had four boys place among the top 60 runners on the 1.8 mile course
  *  Chase Williams was 6th overall  :  Trey Nosek was 34th  :  Brady Thompson was 47th
  *  Owen Powell was 55th  :  Dylan Seessengood was 58th  :  others were Jaedyn Moyes & Mac Alexander

(OLNEY)  the Olney Cubs Wrestling Team will have a fundraising “bake sale” on Saturday, November 8th, at the Olney IGA Store, from 9:00 to 1:00 – proceeds will help with traveling expenses and equipment

 

(OLNEY)  tryouts for the 6th Grade Boys Basketball Team will be held next Monday and Tuesday night, from 5:30 to 6:45 each evening, at the Middle School Gym – all 6th grade boys that want to play must tryout and should attend both nights – a $40 fee will apply to any boy that makes the team – an updated physical exam is required – if questions, call Coach Franklin at 395-4372 or Coach Flanagan at 393-2191

 

(OLNEY)  the ERHS Music Boosters have a fundraiser coming up today from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm at Monical’s Pizza in Olney – fill out a fundraising form while ordering, whether dine in or carry-out, and 20% of your receipt will be donated to the Music Booster’s organization at East Richland High School

(NEWTON)  Week Seven of the National Football League ended last night in Pittsburgh
the host Steelers used a 24-point 2nd quarter to beat the Houston Texans, 30-23
Week Eight of the NFL will kick off this coming Thursday night with the Chargers and Broncos in Denver

 

(OLNEY)  the 2014 Major League Baseball World Series begins tonight in the best-of-seven series
the Royals will host the Giants in Kansas City with the game one start time at 7:07
after game two tomorrow night, the series will switch to San Francisco for game three on Friday

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys & Girls High School Cross Country yesterday – Olney ran well at the Benton Invite
the Tigers finished 3rd overall in the boys race
  *  Olney’s top runner, Matthew DeVenecia was 11th, Dalyn Brach was 16th, and Silven Stallard was 33rd
the Lady Tigers also finished 3rd overall in the girls race
  *  Olney’s top runner, Kylar Craig was 27th, Lauren Eagleson was 28th, and Aaron Bromm was 31st
the Tigers finished 2nd in the boys fresh/soph race
  *  Olney’s Nathan DeMeyer won the race, Michael DeMeyer was 3rd, and Addison Craig was 5th
the Olney runners now prepare for the Regional Cross Country Meet this Saturday at Effingham

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Volleyball last night – Newton swept two matches at home
the Lady Eagles won the varsity match over Dieterich in two games, 25-18 and 25-5
  *  Newton’s top players were Taylor Johnson, Kaitlin Cohorst, Brooke Koebele, and Hannah Litzelman
Newton also won the junior varsity match in two games – the jv Lady Eagles improve to 14&1 on the year
now at 19&10, the varsity Lady Eagles will host Paris during Senior Night this Thursday night at NCHS

 

(OLNEY)  also in High School Volleyball last night – Clay City split two matches at home
the Lady Wolves lost the varsity match to Oblong in three close games, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25
  *  Oblong was led by Emily Lockhart, Samantha Pepmeier, and Kelci Dunlap
  *  Clay City’s top players were Sarah Weiler, Megan Hance, and Macy Hance
Clay City won the junior varsity match in two games
the Lady Wolves now prepare for Class 1A Regional action next week

the host Tigers slipped by Newton, 20-18

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls Junior High Basketball last night – Olney St. Joe opened season with a split at home
the Lady Wildcats lost a tough 8th grade game to Effingham Sacred Heart, 30-16
  *  St. Joe’s Kayley Young led the varsity team with 5 points and 5 rebounds
the Lady Wildcats won the 7th grade game, 15-12
the Olney St. Joe girls are back in action tonight at home against North Clay

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls Junior High Basketball last Thursday – Newton / Jasper County dropped two at home
the Junior Lady Eagles lost the 8th grade game to Paris Mayo, 35-17
  *  the Jasper County girls were led by 12 points from Mallory Bergbower
Paris Mayo also won the 7th grade game, 35-18
the Junior Lady Eagles played at Teutopolis last Friday night
