elsewhere  :  Nationals beat Cubs, 2-1  :  Blue Jays beat White Sox, 6-0  :  Rockies beat Reds, 5-4
Yankees beat Royals, 14-1  :  Twins beat Red Sox, 7-2  :  Giants beat Brewers, 8-4
Rangers beat Indians, 10-8  :  Oakland beat Detroit, 4-0  :  Dodgers beat Braves, 6-3

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Baseball yesterday – Olney’s season came to an end at home
the Class 3A Regional game had Olney falling to Centralia, 8-6 as the Tigers were outhit, 12 to 6
the Tigers finish the year with an overall record of  16 wins and 12 losses
Centralia moves on to the Effingham Regional to face top-seeded Charleston tomorrow at 4:00
the second semi-final has Effingham against Salem at 6:00 – all at Paul Smith Field in Effingham

the Fighting Illini will host one of the sixteen Regionals this weekend up in Champaign
Illinois received a sixth seed overall in the NCAA Baseball Tournament with their 47-7-1 yearly record
the Big Ten Baseball Champs will host Notre Dame, Wright State, and Ohio
it’s a double elimination tournament with two games each on Friday & Saturday, and one game Sunday
* Notre Dame plays Wright State at 1:00 this Friday
* Illinois plays Ohio at 8:00 Friday night
* the first elimination game will be Saturday at 1:00
* the semi-final game is Saturday night at 8:00
* the championship game will be at 1:00 on Sunday
* the winner moves on to one of eight Super Regionals with that winner going to the College World Series

* Session Two for girls entering grades 1-5 from 12:00 to 2:00 each afternoon at the Elementary School

the Newton Lady Eagles finished tied for 15th place out of the 74 teams that took part
Carthage Illini West won, followed by Sidell Jamaica, Sullivan, Aurora Christian, & Effingham St. Anthony

* Taylor Johnson, Lexie Davidson, Hannah Litzelman, and Emma Weber were 2nd in the 1600 meter relay
* McKendra Barthelme was 3rd in the 110 meter high hurdles
* McKendra Barthelme, Taylor Johnson, Lexie Davidson, & Hannah Litzelman / 7th in the 800 meter relay
* McKendra Barthelme was 9th in the long jump

the Olney Tigers finished 2nd behind Carbondale among the eight teams that took part
three Tigers advance to this weekend’s State Tournament by placing in the top four in singles and doubles
* Derek Walker finished 2nd in the singles competition
* Cameron Pearcy and Austin Urfer finished 3rd in the doubles competition

six of the ten Newton Lady Eagles qualified for tomorrow’s finals in four different events
* McKendra Barthelme in the high jump

* McKendra Barthelme, Taylor Johnson, Brooke Koebele, and Hannah Litzelman in the 800 meter relay

several other area girls qualified for the Class 1A finals coming up tomorrow at O’Brien Stadium

the Olney Tigers finished tied for 7th place with Mt. Zion out of the total 15 teams
two Olney Tigers were 1st or 2nd in three events as they qualified for the 2A State Meet next weekend
* Tate Nohren won the 110 meter high hurdles
* Gus Lathrop was 2nd in the 100 meter dash
* Gus Lathrop was 2nd in the 200 meter dash
others advancing includes those from Effingham, Mattoon, Charleston, and Mt Zion

 

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Boys Class 1A Track & Field Sectional was held yesterday at Lawrenceville
the Newton Eagles finished in 2nd place out of the 15 teams that took part
six Newton Eagles either won or finished 2nd in their events, qualifying for the State Meet next weekend
* Matthew Tolliver-Goode, Joseph Stone, Zack Lewis, and Kieth King won the 1600 meter relay

the Tigers lost at Mt. Vernon, 9-2 although each team banged out 10 hits apiece
* Olney’s Luke Lambird had 3 singles, Tyler Zuber had a double & single, and Luke Hahn had 2 singles
now at 16&12 on the year, the Tigers are in Class 3A Regional action next Monday afternoon
the 4th-seeded Tigers will host 5th-seeded Centralia at Bill Millspaugh Field at ERHS in Olney

(OLNEY)  the annual Olney Lady Tiger Youth Basketball Camp is coming up next week
the camps will run each day, Tuesday thru Friday, May 26th thru 29th, with a $35 per girl fee
* Session One for girls entering grades 6-8 from 9:00 to 11:00 each morning in Ron Herrin Gym at ERHS
* Session Two for girls entering grades 1-5 from 12:00 to 2:00 each afternoon at the Elementary School
pre-registration is preferred by May 22nd – forms also accepted a half hour before Tuesday’s first sessions
application forms available at the Olney schools or contact Coach Mark Anselment in Olney

(NEWTON)  the Lincoln Trail College Volleyball program will host a Youth Volleyball Camp tomorrow morning from 9:00 to 12:00 noon in the LTC Sports Center – it’s for students entering 4th thru 6th grades this fall and the camp will focus on the fundamentals of volleyball – the cost is only $20 per player and those that bring two or more teammates will get a $5 discount per player – that’s at LTC near Robinson

the Indians beat the White Sox, 4-2  :  the Twins beat the Pirates, 4-3 in 13 innings
Detroit beat the Brewers, 5-2  :  Atlanta beat the Rays, 2-1  :  Houston beat the A’s, 6-1
* there are 12 games on tap this Thursday, five involving Midwestern teams
the Cardinals are back in New York for the final game of the series this afternoon

Class 2A @ Lawrenceville  :  Teutopolis beat Robinson, 8-0
Class 2A @ Lawrenceville  :  the Newton / Flora semi-final game was postponed to 4:30 this afternoon
Class 2A @ Paris  :  the host Tigers had a walk-off win over Marshall, 4-3
Class 2A @ Du Quoin  :  Benton beat Zeigler-Royalton, 18-8
Class 1A @ Dieterich  :  Effingham St. Anthony beat Beecher City, 16-0
Class 1A @ Louisville  :  Brownstown / St. Elmo beat South Central, 7-6
Class 1A @ Greenup  :  Neoga beat Hutsonville-Palestine, 11-1
most all of the other scheduled semi-finals were postponed until this afternoon at their respective sites

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Girls Class 1A State Track Meet starts today with the preliminaries in Charleston
there are ten Newton Lady Eagles taking part in the State Meet and we wish them the best of luck
* McKendra Barthelme in the long jump, the triple jump, the 100 meter hurdles, and the 300 meter hurdles
* Lexie Davidson in the 800 meter run and the 1600 meter run
* Hannah Litzelman in the 200 meter dash
* Grace Hartrich in the discus throw
* Alex Haarman in the 100 meter dash
* Emma Weber in the 400 meter dash
* Alli Kline, Emma Weber, Taylor Johnson, and Hannah Litzleman in the 1600 meter relay
* McKendra Barthelme, Brooke Koebele, Alex Haarman, and Taylor Johnson in the 800 meter relay
* Hannah Litzelman, Veronica Ochs, Emma Weber, and Lexie Davidson in the 3200 meter relay

the Olney Tigers are among 16 teams competing at the Class 2A Sectional at Mattoon
the Newton Eagles are among 18 teams competing at the Class 1A Sectional at Lawrenceville
* the 1st and 2nd place finishers in each event will advance to the State Track Meets next weekend
