(OLNEY)  in Junior College Baseball over the weekend
the Olney Central College Blue Knights dropped two of three games in Region 24 action
* the Blue Knights won a single game Saturday afternoon at home by beating Shawnee, 3-0
* but the Blue Knights lost two yesterday down south, at Shawnee, near Ullin, 9-1 and 6-5
now at 12&8 on the year, the Blue Knights remain 3&5 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
the OCC Blue Knights are back in GRAC action tomorrow when they host Wabash Valley

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Softball
the OCC Lady Knights were postponed with two games Saturday, rescheduled for this afternoon
the Lady Knights are to play the GRAC twin-bill at Southwestern Illinois today, over at Belleville

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys & Girls High School Track – the Illinois Top Times Meet was held this past weekend
most commonly referred to as the unofficial “indoor state track meet” it was held up in Bloomington
several Newton Eagles and Lady Eagles competed in the various events in Class 1A
* on the girls side : McKendra Barthelme finished 2nd in the 60 meter hurdles and 2nd in the long jump
* on the boys side  :  Joe Stone finished 2nd in the 800 meter run
* there were other boys & girls who did well in their heat events, but no other top five finishers for Newton
the Lady Eagles are at home with Robinson, Marshall, Altamont, and Neoga this Thursday at NCHS
the Eagles are at Robinson on Thursday to also battle Marshall, Altamont, and Neoga

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Track – the Illinois Top Times Meet was held this past weekend
most commonly referred to as the unofficial “indoor state track meet” it was held up in Bloomington
Olney’s Gus Lathrop was one of 16 statewide athletes invited to take part in the 200 meter dash in Class 2A
* Gus finished 6th overall in the 200 meter dash
* Gus was also one of 24 athletes invited to the 60 meter dash, although he did not qualify for the finals
both Olney boys & girls track will be on the road for a pair of quad meets at Effingham this afternoon

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Soccer from over the weekend
the Olney Lady Tigers competed Saturday at the Kaskaskia Shootout, both the varsity and junior varsity
those results are not available at this time, we hope to have them for you in our sports report tomorrow

 

(OLNEY)  the downstate SIJHSAA State Volleyball Tournaments were this past Saturday
the Class S Tournament involved 16 teams at Herrin High School
* Trinity Lutheran of Stewardson won the state championship by winning four straight matches
* involving an area team - Cisne won its first match, but was eliminated in quarter-final action
* both New Hope and Selmaville were both eliminated in first round action
the Class M Tournament involved 8 teams at Nashville High School
* Unity Point won the state championship by winning three straight matches
* Norris City-Omaha-Enfield won its first match but was eliminated in a semi-final match
* both Fairfield and Christopher were eliminated in their quarter-final matches
the Class L Tournament involved 8 teams at Pinckneyville High School
* Harrisburg won the state championship by winning three straight matches
* Carmi won its first match, but then lost in its semi-final match
* both Flora and Mt. Vernon were eliminated in their quarter-final matches

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Recreation Council will host its Bunny Hop 5K event this coming Saturday morning, starting at 9:00, at the Musgrove Aquatic Center – it’s all for fun with no t-shirts, no timers, and no trophies, plus only a $5 or donation entry fee – all are invited to come out this Saturday to either walk, hop, or run for the fun of it and for a healthier you – that’s at 9:00 Saturday morning in Musgrove Park

(OLNEY)  again, most all area sporting events were cancelled yesterday due to wet field conditions

 

(OLNEY)  among the cancellations today is the Olney JV Softball Tournament
there’s also a few other high school baseball and softball games cancelled today in the area as well

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Baseball and Softball – some rescheduled games are on the docket
the OCC Blue Knights are scheduled for GRAC action this weekend against Shawnee Community College
* game one of the three game series is scheduled for today on Conley Field here in Olney at 1:00
* the final two games will be a doubleheader at Shawnee CC down near Ullin tomorrow afternoon
meanwhile, the OCC Lady Knights have had their GRAC twin-bill today at Southwestern Illinois cancelled

the eight team Class L Tournament will be held at the Pinckneyville High School
* some of the teams are Flora, Carmi, Highland, Mt. Vernon, Harrisburg, and Waterloo
the eight team Class M Tournament will be held at the Nashville High School
* some of the teams are Fairfield, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, Breese, and Christopher
the sixteen team Class S Tournament will be held at the Herrin High School
* some of the teams are Cisne, New Hope, Stewardson, Selmaville, and Breese

(OLNEY)  a used baseball and softball equipment sale will be held today with all money raised to help Richland  County youngsters play ball – so dig out those used items and drop them off at the Musgrove Park pavilion this morning from 9:00 to 10:00 – this includes all cleats, socks, pants, sliding shorts & pads, helmets, bats, bags, & gloves – the sale is today from 9:00 to 5:00 at the Musgrove Park pavilion

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Soccer yesterday – it was one of only a few area sporting events played
the Olney Lady Tigers won their home and season opener by beating Mattoon, 2-1 in varsity action
* Olney’s goals were scored by Jordan Laughlin and Erica Mortenson
* the Lady Tigers’ only assist came from Courtney Kman
* Olney had excellent defensive play in the match from Kylar Craig and Hali Hahn
Mattoon won the junior varsity match over Olney
* Olney’s goalie Tori Sturm played very well despite the loss
the Soccer Lady Tigers are back in action tomorrow at the Kaskaskia Shootout over near Centralia

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Softball – there was only area game played in Lawrence County
it was Lawrenceville beating Red Hill, 13-1 as the Lady Indians outhit their neighbors, 10 to 3

 

(OLNEY)  all other area scheduled sports events were cancelled due to wet field conditions
both the Olney Central College Blue Knights and Lady Knights were washed out
all other Newton and Olney teams were cancelled as well due to the wet field conditions

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Track from earlier this week – Newton won a triangular meet on the road
the Lady Eagles beat Lawrenceville and Red Hill in Bridgeport this past Monday, 94 to 30 to 30
Newton won twelve of the seventeen events, eight of which were won individually
* Lexie Davidson won both the 1600 meter run, the 800 meter run, and the long jump
* Hannah Litzelman won the 200 meter dash
* Alex Haarman won the 100 meter dash
* Emma Weber won the 300 meter intermediate hurdles
* McKendra Barthelme won the 100 meter high hurdles
* Taylor Johnson won the triple jump
Newton won all four relays, however relay members for each race were not provided
the Lady Eagle Tracksters will host three other teams next Thursday at NCHS

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys and Girls High School Basketball this weekend
the Annual Lion’s Club All Star Games are tonight down at Rend Lake College near Ina
the Girls All Star Game will start at 6:00 this evening
* the Girls Gold Team will be coached by Harrisburg’s Jake Stewart
* the Girls Purple Team will be coached by Herrin’s Bill Green
   * players from Wayne City, Hamilton County, Centralia, Marion, Benton, & Pinckneyville
   * others from Murphysboro, Nashville, Zeigler-Royalton, Trico, Sesser-Valier, and Herrin
the Boys All Star Game will start at 8:00 tonight
* the Boys Gold Team will be coached by Murphysboro’s Daryl Murphy
* the Boys Purple Team will be coached by Pinckneyville’s Bob Waggoner
   * players from Carmi, Harrisburg, Cairo, West Frankfort, and Centralia
   * others from Mt. Vernon, Hamilton County, Murphysboro, and Waltonville
a Boys and Girls Three Point Shootout will also be held at the halftime of each game as well
a Slam Dunk Contest will be held prior to the boys game
souvenir t-shirts and programs will be on sale – admission is at $5 per person

moved from Olney to Southeastern Illinois, the Lady Knights took two from the Lady Falcons down south
Olney Central College won the first game, 7-2
* the Lady Knights’ winning pitcher was Bailey Walker
* OCC’s top hitter was Alexis Hensley with 4 hits and 3 RBI
the Lady Knights won the second game, 7-5
* OCC’s winning pitcher was Allexis Lemon, while Christian Chambers got the save
* the Lady Knights’ top hitter was Bailey Walker with 2 hits, including an RBI double
the Lady Knights improve to 17&5 on the year, now 6&4 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
the OCC women are scheduled to host John A. Logan with a GRAC twin-bill this afternoon

the Newton Eagles were 19th out of the 32 Class A teams with eight individual top finishers
* Joe Stone was 2nd in the 800 meter run
* Mitch Bierman was 7th in the 200 meter dash
* Jake Volk was 8th in the 60 meter hurdles
* Cody Riddle was 14th in the shot put
* Nick Cartright was 15th in the shot put
* Rhett Kocher was 17th in the long jump

* Tate Nohren was 11th in the triple jump
* Matthew DeVenecia was 13th in the 800 meter run
* Ben Lynch was 13th in the pole vault
* Gavin Lathrop was 20th in the 400 meter dash

the Newton Lady Eagles were 2nd out of 34 Class A downstate teams with nine top finishes
in fact, the Newton girls were just a point and a half behind the winning team from Eureka, 51 to 52.5
* McKendra Barthelme won the long jump, finishing first
* Hannah Litzelman was 2nd in the 200 meter dash
* Taylor Johnson, Brooke Koebele, Lexie Davidson, & Hannah Litzelman were 2nd in the 800 meter relay

Olney lost a close one in Effingham, falling to St. Anthony, 8-7 as the Lady Tigers were outhit, 10 to 5
* Olney’s Sarah Hill hit a 3-run home run with 3 RBI – Dani Hawkins had 1 hit and 2 RBI
at 3&1, the Olney Lady Tigers are scheduled to play again today at home against Cumberland

* Class 2A  :  Mt. Pulaski beat Augusta Southeastern in the championship match in two games
                      Mt. Pulaski finishes the year at 24&3 and champions in Class 2A
* Class 4A  :  Mt. Zion beat Homer Glen Homer in the third place match in three games
                      Mt. Zion finishes the year at 26&1 and third in the state
