(NEWTON)  the College Football season officially kicks into full gear with hundreds of games today
*  two of the three downstate colleges have already opened up their 2014 seasons
*  the SIU Salukis opened their season Thursday night at home with a 45-0 win over Taylor University
*  the EIU Panthers also opened their season Thursday night, losing to Minnesota on the road, 42-20

*  the Lady Tigers defeated Mt. Carmel, 9-0 by winning all nine matches

    *  Jaclyn Shan won the #1 singles match
    *  Nicole Shan won the #2 singles match
    *  Audrey Jensen won the #3 singles match
    *  Rachel Snyder won the #4 singles match
    *  Kayln Bailey won the #5 singles match

*  the Lady Tigers also won all three of the doubles matches

*  the Lady Tigers beat Oblong in the varsity match in two games, 25-16 and 25-14
    *  Olney’s top players were Mackenzie Michels, Courtney Kman, Blake Nohren, and Tanner Piercefield
*  Olney won the junior varsity match in three games
*  the Lady Tigers have their home opener matches next Thursday at ERHS against Mt. Carmel

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Golf earlier this week – it was one of the closest matches ever in Olney
*  Charleston won, while Teutopolis was second, and the host Tigers finished third
*  only one point separated one team from the next – the totals were 188 to 189 to 190
*  the Match Medalist was Christian Deters of Teutopolis with a six over par 41
*  Olney’s top four were Blake Berry, Luke Shan, Jordan Seib, and Jake Kowa
*  the Tigers are 1&3 on the year – they’ll return to the links next Tuesday, traveling to Flora

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball yesterday – Newton / Jasper County won again
*  the Junior Lady Eagles beat Mattoon, 9-3
    *  Kenzie Smith was the winning pitcher, striking out five and walking none in 7 innings
    *  the top hitter was Ali Bierman with three singles
*  the Jasper County girls play again next Thursday at home against Effingham St. Anthony

*  the Cardinals are idle today before starting a weekend series against the Cubs tomorrow night
    *  in one of three MLB afternoon games today – the Reds will again host the Cubs in Cincinnati
    *  later tonight  :  White Sox host the Indians  :  Royals host the Twins  :  the Brewers are idle

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Boys Soccer yesterday – Olney had another tough match
*  the Tigers played Charleston to a 0-0 tie

*  such is the case for the Olney Lady Tigers as they open their volleyball season on the road up at Oblong
*  the Olney Lady Tigers Tennis squad will open up their season today by hosting Mt. Carmel
*  most all of the other sports will begin their fall seasons next week
*  of course the Illinois High School Association’s 2014 football season will get started tomorrow night
    *  while the Olney Tigers open up at Lawrenceville, the Newton Eagles play Edwards County in Albion

 

(NEWTON)  the fourth and final week of preseason National Football League action ends tonight
*  all 32 teams are in action in 16 games tonight, six of which involve Midwestern teams
    *  the Bengals host the Colts in Cincinnati

*  the Cardinals play the Pirates today in the rubber game of the series – one of only two afternoon games
    *  all the other Midwestern teams are in action under the lights tonight

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Boys Soccer yesterday – Olney’s season opener was on the road over in Indiana
*  the Tigers played Vincennes Rivet to a 2-2 tie
*  the Olney goals were scored by Luke Hahn and Ben Lynch
*  the Tigers were also led in play yesterday by Andrew Steber and Connor Walker
*  the Soccer Tigers take part in the Charleston Tournament with three matches this Friday and Saturday

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Golf from Monday – Olney’s season opener hosted two LIC teams
*  the Tigers finished second to Robinson, 188 to 159 – Casey-Westfield was third at 217
*  Robinson’s Tom Goodman was the Match Medalist with a two over par 37
*  Olney’s top golfer was Blake Berry with a round of nine holes at 41
    *  the other top Olney golfers were Jake Kowa (47), Luke Shan (50), and Randy Goodman (50)

*  in MTC action, Clay City dropped two close matches on the road down at North Wayne High School
*  Cisne won the varsity match in two close games, 25-23 and 25-22
    *  top players for Clay City were Sarah Weiler, Megan Hance, and Hannah Dulaney
*  Cisne won the junior varsity match in two games as well

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Baseball from Monday – Jasper County dropped a tough game on the road
*  the Junior Eagles lost at Charleston, 7-1
    *  in other action – South Central beat Clay City, 20-4
*  at 5&2 on the year, the Jasper County boys play tomorrow at Flora

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Cross Country news
*  yesterday’s Jasper County meet was cancelled due to the high heat and humidity levels
*  the Cross Country meet has been rescheduled for tomorrow at Sam Parr State Park starting at 4:30

(NEWTON)  the 4th annual Miss D’s 5K/10K Memorial Scholarship Run/Walk is coming up on Saturday, September 13th, in Newton – with registration forms on Facebook or at the Chamber Office or People’s State Bank in Newton, the Race Day registration is from 6:00 to 6:45 that Saturday morning, followed by race time at 7:00, all on the Square in downtown Newton – preregister by August 30th with a $20 fee and get a free t-shirt – the Race Day fee is $25 - all proceeds benefit the Carolyn Domineck Scholarship Fund

 

(OLNEY)  the 2014 Olney Bicycle Classic is coming up Saturday, September 6th, in the Olney City Park - it all starts with the 25 mile Richland County Challenge Ride at 8:00 with registration required by 7:45 that morning – the entry fee is $15 if signed up by August 29th – the fee increases to $20 thereafter – then the 6 mile TrustBank Family Ride begins at 10:00 open to all ages with registration by 9:45 – then the 11:30 free Kids Races includes all age groups for children, youth, and juniors – all are invited to take part or observe – for details, check the Olney and Greater Richland County Chamber of Commerce website

 

(OLNEY)  the Olney Lady Tigers will have a “Meet the Lady Tigers” night this evening in Ron Herrin Gym at East Richland High School – starting at 6:15, all are invited out to meet this year’s members of the Lady Tiger Volleyball teams, along with coaches & others, plus some volleyball scrimmage action – all parents & fans are invited to ERHS tonight – the Lady Tigers open their 2014 season this coming Thursday evening
