the Fighting Illini lost their NIT Quarter-Final game at Central Florida, 68-58
* Illinois finishes the year at 20-15 as interim coach Jamall Walker went 2-1 in the final three games
Oklahoma State Coach Brad Underwood was named Illinois’ new men’s basketball coach on Monday

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Baseball yesterday – Olney Central College won a non-GRAC doubleheader
the Blue Knights beat Lindenwood Belleville University, 6-4 and 14-0
* the Blue Knights improve to 20-4 on the year and stay at 3-0 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
the OCC baseball squad is back in GRAC play with a single game at 3:00 today at Kaskaskia College
the Lady Knights are back in softball action today hosting John A. Logan with a GRAC twin-bill in Olney

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Softball yesterday – Olney won its fourth straight game
the Lady Tigers beat Cumberland in five innings, 11-1 as Olney outhit the Lady Pirates, 10 to 3
* Olney was led by Sophia Colclasure and Jesika Ochs with 2 hits and 2 RBI each
* Taylor LeCrone had a 3 RBI double while Cheyla Lamb had 2 hits
* Sophia Colclasure was the winning pitcher, allowing no earned runs and striking out 8
the 4-1 Lady Tigers are back in action tomorrow when they travel down to Mt. Vernon

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Track earlier this week – Newton won a quadrangular meet
the Lady Eagles beat 2nd place Red Hill at Bridgeport, 132.5 to 44.5
Oblong was 3rd with 31 points and Lawrenceville was a close 4th place with 30 points
Newton won 13 of the total 17 events
* Emma Weber won the triple jump
* Claire Carr won the long jump
* Courtney Hadra won the discus throw
* Grace Hartrich won the shot put
* Liz Volk won the 100 high hurdles
* Lauren Probst won the 300 intermediate hurdles
* Alex Haarmann won the 100 meter dash
* Brooklyn Herman won the 200 meter dash

(OLNEY)  congrats to a downstate girl with Olney ties that did very well shooting free throws last Saturday
Rayci Phelps won the 8-9 Year Old Division of the Regional Hoop Shoot up in Iowa City, Iowa
the state winners from Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota competed in the weekend event
* the 3rd grader from McLeansboro made 23 of her 25 free throws and then a shoot-off to win her division
* Rayci was also the day’s top female shooter & she helped Illinois win the trophy for all around most shots
* Rayci is the daughter of Roger and Chasiti Phelps – her grandparents are Stewart and Cindy Phelps
* Rayci’s great grandparents are Bill and Irene Phelps of Olney
Rayci now advances to the Regional Finals on April 22nd in Chicago – congratulations and best of luck

at the Men’s Tournament out in Hutchinson, Kansas
* the District 16 Champions from Vincennes University are in quarter-final action this afternoon
* the 7th-seeded Trailblazers (32-2) will play South Plains (27-0), the nation’s top-seeded team
the NJCAA Women’s and Men’s Division I Basketball Tournaments will finish up this weekend

(NEWTON)  a Pro Tips Baseball Camp will be held Saturday, April 1st, at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park in Newton – the morning session from 9:00 to 12:00 is for players in 5th & 6th grades – the afternoon session from 1:00 to 4:00 is for players in 7th & 8th grades – the cost is at $30 per player – created by NCHS athlete Mitch Jansen, the camp will feature former Major League Baseball player Ross Wolf, plus other area players and coaches – the camp will focus on hitting, throwing, and fielding – in the event of rain, the camp will be held in the NCHS Gym – a limited number of spots are available so sign up now – you can  register online at  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pro-tips-baseball-camp-tickets-32050210041

* the 7th-seeded Trailblazers, at 32-2 on the year,  advance to a quarter-final game tomorrow afternoon
* their opponent will be undefeated and top-seeded South Plains that enters the game at 27-0 on the year

the Lady Cubs won their semi-final match over Flora in two sets, 25-11 and 25-16
it was Carmi winning the other semi-final match over Mt. Carmel in two sets
the Lady Cubs then lost in the championship match, falling to Carmi in two close sets, 24-26 and 19-25
* Olney’s top players on the night were Madelyn Rusk, Alayna Spitz, Paige Tedford, and Reagan Ameter
the Lady Cubs varsity squad finishes the year with an overall record at 12-12

 

(NEWTON)  the upstate IESA 8th Grade State Volleyball Tournaments ended last night

Class 1A Championship Match @ New Berlin  :
* Hartsburg-Emden beat Grayville in two sets – the Junior Bison finish with a record at 22-1
Class 3A Third Place Match @ Tolono  :
* Pana beat Germantown Hills in two sets – the Junior Panthers finish the year at 23-5
Class 4A Championship Match @ Mt. Zion  :
* Frankfort beat Mt. Zion in two sets – the Junior Braves finish the year at 24-3

 

(OLNEY)  the Illinois YMCA State Swimming Championship Meet was this past Saturday and Sunday
with hundreds of athletes taking part, it was held at Lake Central High School in St. John, Indiana
the event included swimmers from Central & Northern Illinois, plus parts of Indiana and Wisconsin
to take part, the athletes had to attain qualifying time standards set by Illinois YMCA Swimming
a total of 39 swimmers from the Heartland Hurricanes Swim Team, based in Effingham took part
the Heartland Hurricanes finished 11th out of the 40 teams that were represented
there were four swimmers from Olney that swam on the Heartland Hurricanes’ team
* Owen Powell, Maria Mayorga Ibarra, Carolyn Powell, and Kaylei Eubank
in the Men’s 21 Year Old and Under Age Group, here’s the results for Owen Powell

the Fighting Illini will battle Florida Central in the NIT Tournament quarter-final game this evening
* Illinois comes into tonight’s matchup with a 20-14 overall record
* the 23-11 Knights are coming off a Monday night upset as they beat Illinois State, 63-62
it will be a 6:00 Central Time tipoff tonight for Fighting Illini basketball from Florida

the Fighting Illini won their second round game in the NIT by beating Boise State, 71-56
improving to 20-14, Illinois will now play Central Florida in a quarter-final game tomorrow night

at the Women’s Tournament last night in Lubbock, Texas
* the District 16 Champions from Wabash Valley College were eliminated from the tournament
* the #21 Cochise Apaches beat the #12 Lady Warriors, 96-75
* Wabash Valley ends the season with an overall record at 31-2
the Men’s Tournament continues at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, Kansas
* the District 16 Champions from Vincennes University had a first round bye
* the 31-2 #7 Trailblazers play Northern Oklahoma Enid tonight at 8:30 (Illinois time)

* Gage Miller threw the last inning and a third to pick up the win

Newton finished in 4th place out of the 36 Class A teams, just four points behind 3rd place Tuscola
Shelbyville won the event with 76 points, followed by Pleasant Plains in 2nd place with 41 points
the Eagles had 9 top ten finishes in the total 15 events with hundreds of athletes taking part
* Joe Stone was 2nd in the 800 meter run
* Mitch Bierman, Tim Weber, Tenton Duncan, Rhett Kocher, Hunter Gray, Jerald Eckl / 2nd / 4x200 relay

the Tigers had 12 top thirty finishes in the total 15 events that were held

* Josiah Burckhartt was 11th in the pole vault
* Tyler Hughes was 13th in the 3200 meter run
* Cameron Howard was 15th in the 200 meter dash
* Jordan Duenas was 17th in the high jump

* Peyton Blanton was 19th in the 60 meter hurdles

the Lady Cubs play against Flora at Flora this afternoon at 4:30
the other semi-final match has Carmi up against Mt. Carmel at 5:30
then the two winners play for the Regional Championship at 6:30
tonight’s champion advances to the Class L State Volleyball Tournament this Saturday at Pinckneyville

the Lady Tigers scored first but ended up losing to Flora, 13-4
* the visiting Wolfgals outhit the host Lady Tigers, 13 to 5
* Aliyah Wease led Olney at the plate with a home run, a single, and two RBI
* other Olney hits from Cheyla Lamb, Maci Baker, and Jessika Ochs
the Lady Tigers are quickly back in action today as they host their Varsity Tournament
