the Cardinals survived a long rain delay to beat the Cubs, 6-0 as the Redbirds take the first of four games
elsewhere  :  Pirates beat Padres, 2-1  :  Reds beat Nationals, 3-2  :  Braves beat Brewers, 5-3
White Sox beat Blue Jays, 4-2  :  Astros beat Indians, 9-4  :  Twins beat Orioles in 10 innings, 4-2
Tigers beat Mariners, 12-5  :  the Royals at home against the Rays were rained out
* it’s a 17 game schedule on this Tuesday
the Cardinals have a split day / night doubleheader at Wrigley Field in Chicago
* game one starts at 12:30 this afternoon with the nightcap later this evening with game time at 7:05

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior Legion Baseball last night – Newton won two games at home
Newton Post 20 won the first game over Altamont, 9-1 as Newton outhit the visitors, 11 to 4
* the winning pitcher was Tim Weber with a complete game victory
* top Newton hitters were Nate Meinhart with two hits and 4 RBI – Mitch Bierman with a double and 3 RBI
* Tim Weber with a RBI triple – Mitch Jansen with a RBI hit – Luke Geier & Joe Stone had two hits each
Newton Post 20 won the second game, a rescheduled rain out, beating Altamont, 15-1 in five innings
* the winning pitcher was Mitch Jansen, allowing only three hits
* top Newton hitters were Nick Cohorst with two hits and 2 RBI – Mitch Bierman with a hit and 3 RBI
* also two hits and a RBI for Brock Mammoser – two hits each for Ben Britton & Mitch Jansen
now at 17&4 overall, 9&1 in league action, Newton Post 20 is scheduled to play at Dieterich tonight at 6:00

Olney lost to visiting Dieterich, 7-2
* top Olney hitters were Dylan Hires and Luke Lambird, each with three hits apiece
now at 7&5 overall, 7&3 in league action, Olney is scheduled to play at Teutopolis tomorrow night at 6:00

 

(OLNEY)  in Little League Baseball action – the Olney 12 Year Olds start play tomorrow night
it’s the District One Tournament at Lawrenceville with two first round games Wednesday night
* Salem play Mt. Carmel at 6:00
* then Olney plays host Lawrenceville at 8:00
* tomorrow night’s winners play at 6:00 Thursday evening
* tomorrow night’s losing teams will play at 8:00 Thursday night
* the final consolation round game will be Friday night at 6:00
* then the championship game Saturday afternoon at 4:00
* the second championship game, if needed, would be Sunday afternoon at 4:00
the younger Olney All-Stars will begin District One action next week

(NEWTON)  the Outdoors Unlimited Youth & Family Recreation Day will be held this Saturday, July 11th, at Sam Parr State Park, northeast of Newton, at the White Oak Picnic Area – with registration any time after 9:00 that morning, activities will run from 10:00 to 3:00, including hatchet throwing, bow fishing boat rides, clay pigeon shooting, 3-D archery, slingshot shooting, fishing, .22 rifle marksmanship, and muzzleloader shooting, with all equipment provided – it’s free admission for all youngsters and lunch will be provided – parents are welcome – assisted by the Jasper County Wild Turkey Federation – call Keith at  618-843-3386

 

(NEWTON)  the Lake Land College’s Agriculture Division for the 10th annual Livestock Judging Team Golf Outing is set for this Friday, July 10th, at Fox Prairie Links in Windsor – it’s a four person scramble with the $70 per person cost to include a golf cart, two mulligans, and dinner – advanced registration is preferred by July 1st, but registration on that Friday starts at 11:30 with a shotgun start at 12:30 – plenty of prizes – all proceeds go to support the Lake Land College Livestock Judging Team and it’s travel expenses

(FLORA)  it’s back to dirt track racing tonight at the Route 45 Raceway, just north of Flora, all part of the 1st Annual Amber (Lee) Mahon Memorial Ride & Race – while the Saturday night race includes Pro Late Models, Modifieds, B-Mods, Hornets, and Pure Stocks, the Ride portion of the fundraiser will begin with 8:00 sign up this morning at John Boys in Flora with the ride beginning at 10:00 – with several stops, the ride will end at the Route 45 Raceway, where the gates open to the public at 5:00 with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:00 – there’s plenty of concessions & more tonight at the Route 45 Raceway north of Flora

the local group of youngsters have won all 13 of their games at Shootouts in Salem and Effingham

* it’s a shortened 12 game schedule in the Big Leagues on this Thursday
the Cardinals will start a four game weekend series at home against the San Diego Padres in St. Louis

* Newton’s John Grunloh had the game’s only RBI with two hits – Mitch Bierman had the other Newton hit
Newton won the second game over Teutopolis, 4-1 in five innings although Newton was outhit, 3 to 2
* winning pitcher was John Grunloh
* top Newton hitters were Kyle Kocher with a two RBI double, plus Nate Meinhard and Brock Mammoser
the 15&4 Newton Post 20 is now 7&1 in League action – they play tonight at Effingham at 7:00

 

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swimming competition from this past Tuesday – the Olney Tigersharks win again
the Olney swimmers beat the Brittlebank Barracudas of Mt. Vernon, Indiana, 596 to 45
the Tigersharks won also every age group event throughout all the various categories

also a big “thank you” to everyone that supported their fundraising “Kicking 4 Kash” event yesterday
the Tigersharks are back in the water next Tuesday night when they host Carmi & Mt. Carmel in Olney
