Indians beat Blue Jays, 4-2  :  Padres beat Rangers, 7-0
*  it’s a full 16-game schedule on this Tuesday
the Cardinals play game two of a three game series tonight back in St. Louis

 

(NEWTON) in High School Fresh/Soph Football action from last night
* Newton defeated Edwards County, 48-0
* Olney lost to Lawrenceville, 30-12

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer from the weekend Red & Gold Tournament in Charleston
the Olney Tigers played well with a win over Effingham, 2-1
* goals were scored by Treston Stanley and Isaac Pampe with an assist from Austin Urfer
* Olney had some great defense by Gavin Lathrop and Ben Lynch
the Tigers then played host Charleston to a 1-1 tie
* Olney’s lone goal came from Connor Walker, assisted by Kye Stallard
the junior varsity Tigers also played Charleston to a 1-1 tie
* Olney’s goal by Trey Nosek, assisted again by Kye Stallard
Olney’s three Varsity All Tournament Players were Austin Urfer, Brock VanBlaricum, and Treston Stanley

* the Match Medalist was Olney’s Tanner Hout with a round at 36
* Olney’s Luke Shan and Jake Kowa each shot a 44, while Randy Goodman shot a 49
at 4&2 overall, now 2&1 in the LIC, the Tigers are back in action today over at Flora

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball yesterday – Jasper County wins again
the Junior Lady Eagles beat Paris, 5-0
* the winning pitcher was Kenzie Smith with five strike outs
* the top hitter was Allison Harris with three hits and four RBI
at 13&2, the Jasper County girls are back in action today, hosting Martinsville in Newton

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior League Football Saturday – Olney won the 7th/8th grade at Newton, 40-0
the Junior Tigers ran for 238 yards with 6 touchdowns and 49 yards thru the air on 4 passes
defensively, the elder squad from Olney had 42 total tackles and 2 fumble recoveries
* Blake Mitchell led Olney’s defense with 5 tackles – Quinn Miller had 4 tackles on the night
* Ben Allen and Cameron Gardner each had 3 tackles and 1 fumble recovery
* offensively, Kaleb Foster carried the ball only twice, running for 66 yards and a touchdown
* Luke Allen ran for 48 yards on 5 carries with a touchdown
* Hunter Perry scored a touchdown on a 44 yard run – Jace Greenwood scored on a 27 yard run
* Jayden Fleming scored two touchdowns, gaining 27 yards on 3 carries
* Foster completed 4 passes – 2 to Jace Greenwood and 1 each to Ethan Rodgers & Jayden Fleming
at 3&0 on the year, the Olney 7th/8th graders will be in action this Saturday night at Flora

(FLORA)  a Dinger Bats Charity Golf Scramble will be held Saturday morning, September 12th, at the Flora Golf & Country Club, starting at 9:00, with cinnamon rolls & coffee before tee time – it’s $50 per golfer with 6 person teams & mixed teams invited – lunch provided, plus prizes, give-aways, and a baseball bat raffle – also includes a Silent Auction which is open to the public, but closes 30 minutes after the scramble ends – items include several autographed bats & baseball, many from Cardinal players – the signup deadline is Saturday, September 5th, with all proceeds to the St. Stephen’s Catholic Church Outreach programs – to register or to get more information, call Ted Whitehead in Flora at  618-599-6719

the Lady Tigers won all three matches in their home openers against Oblong in Ron Herrin Gym
* the varsity won in two games, 25-12, 25-9 led by Blake Nohren, Dani Hawkins, and Sydney O’Dell
* the Olney junior varsity won in two games, 25-20, 25-15
* the Olney fresh/soph also won in two games, 25-14, 25-21

(NEWTON)  in High School Volleyball from Saturday’s Hutsonville Invitational – Newton finished first
the Lady Eagles won all four matches to claim the tournament’s championship
* in pool play, Newton beat Marshall in two games, 25-15, 25-15
* in pool play, Newton beat Oblong in two games, 25-12, 25-9
* and to finish pool play, Newton beat Robinson in three games, 17-25, 25-17, 25-15
* Newton then won the championship match over Bement in two games, 25-19, 25-21
* Newton’s top players included Allie Kline, Grace Hartrich, and Taylor Johnson
at 4&0 on the year, the Lady Eagles are back in action Thursday night at Effingham

the Junior Lady Eagles beat Oblong, 13-3
* Maddie Hemrich was the winning pitcher
* Kelsi Geitz was the top hitter with a triple and two doubles
Newton then beat Red Hill, 10-0
* Maddie Hemrich threw a no-hitter for another win
at 12&2, the Jasper County girls are back in action today, traveling to Paris

(OLNEY) in Girls High School Tennis from yesterday - Olney won their season opener the Lady Tigers beat Mt. Carmel on the road, 7-2 Olney won all six of the singles matches * Nicole Shan won the #1 match in two sets * Audrey Jensen won the #2 match in two sets * Rachel Woods won the #3 match in two sets * Kaelyn Bailey won the #4 match in three sets * Logan Kauble won the #5 match in two sets * and Kenna Steber won the #6 match in two sets the Lady Tigers took one of the three doubles matches * Olney's lone winners were Nicole Shan & Audrey Jensen in the #1 match at 1&0 on the year, the Lady Tigers are back on the courts next Tuesday at Casey-Westfield

 

(OLNEY) in Boys High School Soccer earlier this week - Olney played to a season opening tie the Tigers and Vincennes Rivet finished tied at 1-1 * Olney's lone goal was scored by Treston Stanley * Olney's Kye Stallard got the assist * Olney's Brock VanBlaricum had 8 saves on goal, plus great defense from Austin Urfer Vincennes Rivet won the junior varsity match, 1-0 the Soccer Tigers are back in action today & tomorrow at the Red & Gold Tourney in Charleston

 

(OLNEY) in girls High School Volleyball, it was a clean sweep for the Lady Tigers over Oblong,

Olney won the Varsity in two games 25-12, 25-9, Olney JV won in two, 25-20, 25-15 and Olney Fresh/Soph won in two, 25-14, 25-21. Blake Norhen with 12 kills, Dani Hawkins 11 assists, Sydney O’dell 11points and Haley Simpson 2 blocks. Elsewhere in girls High School Volleyball, Clay City over Flora in 3 games in Varsity, Clay also won JV game in 3 games and Edwards County over Mt. Carmel in 3 games in varsity and won the JV in two games.
