the Cardinals held on to beat the Brewers, 6-5
* the Midwestern teams that won were the Cubs, Royals, Indians, Tigers, Astros, and Rangers
* the Midwestern teams that lost were the White Sox, Pirates, Reds, and Twins
the Cardinals are back at it on the road tonight in Milwaukee against the Brewers

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Baseball yesterday
* Teutopolis beat Altamont, 9-4
* Dieterich beat Ramsey, 11-1 in five innings

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Baseball – Jasper County has dropped two in a row
on Saturday, Effingham shutout the Junior Eagles, 5-0
in action yesterday, Jasper County lost a close one to Mattoon, 4-3
at 6-6 on the season, the Junior Eagles are on the road today to Martinsville

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Football from Saturday – Newton won its first game of the year
the Eagles had no problem with the non-conference victory over Georgetown-Ridge Farm, 40-0
* Newton jumped out to a 16-0 lead after the first quarter, then expanded the lead at half time, 28-0
* the Eagles added 12 more points in the third quarter, with no points scored in the fourth quarter
Newton had 463 total yards, 255 yards by rushing and 208 by passing
Newton’s defense held Georgetown-Ridge Farm to 58 total yards, 44 by ground, 14 by air
the Eagles scored six touchdowns, four by rushing and two by passing
* a Tim Weber to Joe Stone 40 yard TD pass
* a Tim Weber to Mitch Bierman 44 yard TD pass
* two Tim Weber TD runs, one from 16 yards and the other from 1 yard

* the Tigers outscored Lawrenceville 7-6 in the second quarter with a 14-6 lead at halftime
* Olney was held scoreless in the third quarter as the Indians scored a TD to make the score 14-12
* the Tigers outscored Lawrenceville in the fourth quarter 7-6 ending with the Olney 3-point win
Olney had 283 total yards, 209 by passing and 74 by rushing
Lawrenceville had 326 total yards, 281 by ground and 45 by air
the Tigers three touchdowns, two by rushing and one by passing
* a Dalton Mitchell to Gage Miller 112 yard pass
* a Dalton Mitchell 1 yard run

* the Midwestern teams that won two were the White Sox, Pirates, and Rangers
* the Midwestern teams that lost two were the Cubs, Indians, Brewers, Tigers, and Twins
* the Midwestern teams that split two were the Royals, Reds, Braves, and Astros
the Cardinals start up a three game series tonight in Milwaukee against the Brewers

 

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Football season began this past weekend throughout Illinois
there were four Little Illini Conference games Friday night involving eight of the nine LIC teams
* the Olney Tigers defeated the Lawrenceville Indians, 21-18
* Red Hill beat Robinson, 44-34
* Casey Westfield beat Paris, 9-6
* Marshall beat Flora, 31-18
there was a non-LIC game on Saturday involving the defending LIC Champs from Newton
* the Eagles beat Georgetown-Ridge Farm, 40-0
we’ll look at some of the game stats for both Olney and Newton is our sports report tomorrow
all of the LIC teams will be back in action this Friday night

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Volleyball – the Hutsonville Invitational was held Saturday
Newton came away with the Tournament Championship with four wins, all in two sets each
* the Lady Eagles won the first match over Dugger, Indiana, 25-7, 25-13
* Newton won their second match by beating Oblong, 25-13, 25-12
* the Lady Eagles ended pool play with a victory over Lawrenceville, 25-14, 25-8
* Newton then won the championship match by beating Bement, 25-6, 25-8
the Lady Eagles were led by multiple players in each of the various categories
* Grace Hartrich had 51 assists, while Abby Frohning had 12
* Mallory Bergbower had 28 kills, followed by Kaitlyn Cohorst with 15 and Abby Frohning with 14
* Kristen Hardiek had 19 serve aces, while Kaitlyn Cohorst had 12 and Abby Frohning had 8
* Mallory Bergbower had 12 digs, followed by Kristen Hardiek with 10 and Grace Hartrich with 9
* Mariah Earnest led the team with 3 blocks - Taylor Smith and Grace Hartrich each had 2
the 4-0 Lady Eagles have their first home match Thursday night against Effingham

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys High School Soccer – the Red & Gold Invitational ended Saturday at Charleston
Newton took second place in the tournament after the final two matches on Saturday
Centralia won the Gold Tournament, with Olney finishing third and Effingham fourth
the Eagles played Olney to a 0-0 tie in the morning match
* Newton goalie Gavin Fehrenbacher had 12 saves, plus great defense from Ben Britton
* Jack Chapman led Newton with six shots on goal – Ben Carr had three shots
the Eagles won their afternoon match by beating Effingham, 5-1
* Newton’s Cole Farley and Ben Carr each had two goals – Jack Chapman scored one
* Eagle goalie Gavin Fehrenbacher had four saves – Effingham’s only score was on a penalty kick
at 1-0-2, the Soccer Eagles are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Pana

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer – the Red & Gold Invitational ended Saturday at Charleston
Olney finished third in the Gold Tournament after the final two matches were played Saturday
Centralia won the Gold Tournament, with Newton finishing second and Effingham fourth
Olney played Newton to a 0-0 tie in their first match Saturday morning
* Tiger goalie Isaac Pampe had five saves
* plus some great play by Gavin Lathrop, Jacob Henry, and Trey Nosek
the Olney JV also played to a 0-0 tie in their first match Saturday morning against Mattoon
* Jordan Duenas led the JV Tigers
Olney then lost a tough 2-1 match Saturday afternoon to Centralia
* the Tiger’s lone goal was scored by Jacob McVicker, assisted by Kye Stallard
* Olney was defensively by Caleb Gardner, plus goalie Isaac Pampe had eight saves on goal
the Olney JV won their afternoon game by beating Centralia, 1-0
* the match’s only goal was scored by Olney’s Jaden Burckhartt
the 1-1-1 Soccer Tigers have their first home match Thursday against Effingham St. Anthony

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Fall Baseball Saturday at the Tuetopolis Wooden Bat Tournament
the host Wooden Shoes won the tournament with Dieterch finishing second
* in game one  :  Teutopolis beat Effingham St. Anthony, 6-0
* game two  :  Dieterich beat North Clay / Louisville, 9-7
* third place game  :  Effingham St. Anthony beat North Clay / Louisville, 14-0
* championship game  :  Teutopolis beat Dieterich, 2-0
the Wooden Shoes improve to 5-0, Dietierch is 1-3, St. Anthony and North Clay are each 2-2

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball from Saturday’s Oblong Tournament
Jasper County beat Red Hill, 6-5
* Whitney Zumbahlen was the winning pitcher
* the top hitters were Payton Kinder with 3 hits and a run scored – Ava Kessler with 3 walks, 3 runs scored
Red Hill beat Oblong in the other first round game, 7-3
then in the championship game – Jasper County beat Oblong, 14-3
* the winning pitcher was Emma Kidwell
at 8-5, the Junior Lady Eagles are back at it today at home in Newton against Mattoon

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior Football League action from Saturday at Lawrenceville
the Olney teams won two of the three games on the road
* Lawrenceville won the 7th & 8th grade game over Olney, 20-8
* Olney beat Lawrenceville in the 5th & 6th grade game, 44-0
* Olney won the 3rd & 4th grade game by beating Lawrenceville, 6-0
the Olney teams are back at home this coming Saturday against the teams from Red Hill
it’s 3rd & 4th grade action at 3:30, with the older games following at around 5:00 and 7:00

there were four Little Illini Conference games last night involving eight of the nine LIC teams
* the Olney Tigers defeated the Lawrenceville Indians 21-18
* Red Hill defeated Robinson 44-34
* Casey Westfield defeated Paris 9-6
* Marshall defeated Flora 31-18

* the JV Tigers play Mattoon at 10:30 this morning and Centralia at 4:30 later this afternoon
after the Newton Eagles played Centralia to a tie Thursday, they’re back in action twice today

the Cardinals start up a weekend series tonight in St. Louis – it’s the first of three against the Oakland A’s

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer yesterday at the Red & Gold Invitational at Charleston
the Olney Tigers won their first match of the year by defeating Effingham, 7-0
* Josiah Burckhartt led Olney with four goals – Trey Nosek scored two and Seth Ingram had one
* Kye Stallard had two of Olney’s five assists – Trey Nosek, Jacob Henry, & Weston Deshon each had one
* Isaac Pampe had three saves in the goal – plus some great play by Jacob McVicker and Gavin Lathrop
the Olney Tigers also won their JV match, by beating Effingham, 7-2
* Isaac Bradley scored two of the Olney goals
* other goals made by Jaden Burckhartt, Caleb Watkins, Seth Kocher, Mac Alexander, & Reid Snyder
the Olney teams are off today, but return to action tomorrow

* Olney was led by Cheyla Lamb, Dani Hawkins, Faith Stallard, and Lauren Eagleson
Olney also won the JV match in two sets, 25-16, 25-10
the Lady Tigers split the Fresh/Soph match by winning one and losing one
Olney will have their home opener in Ron Herrin Gym next Thursday against Mt. Carmel at RCHS

* the Midwestern teams that lost were the White Sox, Royals, Pirates, Reds, Twins, and Braves
the Cardinals will finish up their three game series with the Mets tonight, back in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Golf yesterday at the Richland Country Club in Olney
visiting Charleston won a four-team match by beating out second place Teutopolis, 157 to 172
* the Match Medalist was Teutopolis’ Christian Deters with an even par 36 on RCC’s back nine holes
the host Tigers finished in third place by beating out Fairfield, 192 to 218
* Coen McDowell led Olney with an eight over par round of 44, followed by Randy Goodman with a 46
* rounding out the top four for Olney were Luke Shan with a 49 and Ryan Tolliver with a 53
the Tigers are now 1-4 on the season, but winless so far in LIC action at 0-2
Olney is back on the links next Tuesday at the Clay County Country Club, just west of Flora

* the Marshall Lions are on the road to Flora to open up against the Wolves on Dancey Field
* and Casey-Westfield will host the Tigers from Paris up in Clark County
the remaining LIC team will be in non-conference action
* the defending LIC Champs from Newton have a 2:00 start Saturday up at Georgetown-Ridge Farm
