(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball Monday, involving Midwestern teams
*  the Cardinals take a one game lead in the NL Central with a win over Pittsburgh, 5-4
    *  elsewhere  :  the Cubs beat the Brewers, 4-2  :  the White Sox and Reds were idle
    *  the Royals beat Texas, 4-3  :  the Twins beat Baltimore, 6-4  :  the Indians lost to Detroit, 12-1
*  the Cardinals are back at home tonight to host the Pirates at Busch Stadium in St. Louis
    *  elsewhere  :  the Cubs host Milwaukee  :  the Twins host the White Sox  : the Royals host Texas
    *  the Reds are in Baltimore  :  the Indians will again host the Tigers

 

(OLNEY)  as we reported yesterday, Olney won two of the three Junior Pro Football games Saturday
*  one of the wins was in Lawrenceville involving the 3rd and 4th grade team
*  here’s a look at some of the top players for Olney in the 26-12 win
    *  defensively, Zachariah Wease led the team with 9 tackles, Carter Beard had 6, and Ian Cox had 5
        *  Luke Colwell had 2 tackles and a forced fumble
    *  offensively, Wease ran for 133 yards on only 2 carries with one touchdown run
        *  Dawson Brown carried the ball 8 times for 51 yards and one touchdown
        *  Devon Foster, Gage Nuttall, and Carter Beard combined for 92 yards on 9 carries
*  all three of the Olney Junior Pro Football teams will be home this Saturday against Flora

(OLNEY)  the annual Olney Central College Blue Knight’s Golf Classic is set for Friday, September 26th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney, with registration and lunch at 12 noon and tee-off at 1:00 – the cost is $70 per person, which includes green fees, refreshments on the course, prizes, lunch, and dinner, all in a 4 person scramble format – $100 hole sponsorships are available – all proceeds to support OCC Blue Knights Basketball – the registration form deadline is September 19th – call Coach Mike Burris at 618-395-7777

(NEWTON)  the 4th annual Miss D’s 5K/10K Memorial Scholarship Run/Walk is coming up on Saturday, September 13th, in Newton – with registration forms on Facebook or at the Chamber Office or People’s State Bank in Newton, the Race Day registration is from 6:00 to 6:45 that Saturday morning, followed by race time at 7:00, all on the Square in downtown Newton – preregister by August 30th with a $20 fee and get a free t-shirt – the Race Day fee is $25 – all proceeds benefit the Carolyn Domineck Scholarship Fund

*  the Redbirds came back to win Saturday night and yesterday – now tied for first in the NL Central
    *  elsewhere  :  the White Sox took two of three from Detroit  :  Reds split two with Pittsburgh
    *  the Brewers and Twins both dropped two to the Giants and Orioles, respectively
    *  the Indians beat the Royals Saturday while last night’s game was suspended to finish September 22nd
*  the Cardinals stay at home for the first of three against the Pirates this afternoon
    *  elsewhere this afternoon  :  Cubs host the Brewers  :  White Sox and Reds are both idle
    *  the Royals host the Rangers  :  the Indians host Detroit  :  the Twins are in Baltimore

 

(OLNEY)  in Division One College Football from Saturday
*  the Fighting Illini won their season opener with a come-back win over Youngstown State, 28-17
*  earlier in the week last Thursday the SIU Salukis won while the EIU Panthers lost
*  all three teams are back in action this coming Saturday

 

(NEWTON)  the 2014 IHSA Football season began last Friday night throughout Illinois
*  in the Little Illini Conference in conference play
    *  the winners included Newton, Robinson, Casey-Westfield, Marshall, and Lawrenceville
    *  while the Olney Tigers lost at Lawrenceville, their home opener is this coming Friday night at ERHS
    *  the Newton Eagles will also have their home opener this Friday night at Chivesky Field at NCHS
*  in the Little Okaw Valley with non-conference action
    *  the winners include Cumberland, Argenta-Oreana, Arcola, Sangamon Valley, and Villa Grove       
*  the Apollo Conference teams were all in non-conference matchups
    *  the winners were Effingham, Charleston, Mt. Zion, and Taylorville
*  in the Black Diamond Conference
    *  the winners were Fairfield, Chester, Johnston City, and Eldorado

*  Olney’s Tyler Zuber had 4 saves on goal – plus exceptional play from Marshall King and Andrew Steber
*  the Soccer Tigers have played four matches with no wins, one loss, and three ties

*  two of the three downstate colleges have already opened up their 2014 seasons
*  the SIU Salukis opened their season Thursday night at home with a 45-0 win over Taylor University

    *  Audrey Jensen won the #3 singles match

*  Olney won the junior varsity match in three games
*  the Lady Tigers have their home opener matches next Thursday at ERHS against Mt. Carmel

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Golf earlier this week – it was one of the closest matches ever in Olney
*  Charleston won, while Teutopolis was second, and the host Tigers finished third
*  only one point separated one team from the next – the totals were 188 to 189 to 190
*  the Match Medalist was Christian Deters of Teutopolis with a six over par 41
*  Olney’s top four were Blake Berry, Luke Shan, Jordan Seib, and Jake Kowa
*  the Tigers are 1&3 on the year – they’ll return to the links next Tuesday, traveling to Flora

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball yesterday – Newton / Jasper County won again
*  the Junior Lady Eagles beat Mattoon, 9-3
    *  Kenzie Smith was the winning pitcher, striking out five and walking none in 7 innings
    *  the top hitter was Ali Bierman with three singles
*  the Jasper County girls play again next Thursday at home against Effingham St. Anthony

(OLNEY)  in High School Boys Soccer yesterday – Olney had another tough match
*  the Tigers played Charleston to a 0-0 tie

*  the Olney Lady Tigers Tennis squad will open up their season today by hosting Mt. Carmel
*  most all of the other sports will begin their fall seasons next week
*  of course the Illinois High School Association’s 2014 football season will get started tomorrow night
    *  while the Olney Tigers open up at Lawrenceville, the Newton Eagles play Edwards County in Albion

 

(NEWTON)  the fourth and final week of preseason National Football League action ends tonight
*  all 32 teams are in action in 16 games tonight, six of which involve Midwestern teams
    *  the Bengals host the Colts in Cincinnati
