the Blues cruised past the Stars in game three, 6-1 to take a two game to one advantage
game four in the best-of-seven series is tomorrow night in St. Louis – game five back in Dallas Saturday

the Cardinals’ bats were silent as the Phillies beat the Redbirds, 1-0
* other Midwestern losers last night were the Reds, Pirates, Tigers, and Twins
* those that won included the Cubs, White Sox, Royals, Indians, Brewers, and Braves
the Cardinals are back at home tonight with the third game of four against the Phillies in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Baseball – OCC finished the regular season on a very rough note
the Blue Knights lost their final two games at John A. Logan, 9-7 and 5-4 in 8 innings
* OCC finishes the regular season by losing 11 of their last 14 games, 10 of which were GRAC games
* the Blue Knights end the regular season with a 39-17 overall record, at 15-12 in the Conference
the Region 24 Tournament begins this weekend with four sectional best-of-three series
it’s doubleheader action Saturday with two nine inning games starting at 12:00 noon and 3:00
a third and deciding game will be played Sunday at 12:00 noon, if it’s needed
the top four teams in the GRAC and Region will host the four sectionals
* top-seeded John A. Logan will host 8th-seeded Lake Land down at Carterville
* 2nd-seeded Wabash Valley will host 7th-seeded Southwestern Illinois in Mt. Carmel

the Tigers shutout Casey-Westfield, 10-0 in six innings as Olney outhit the visiting Warriors, 8 to 2
* Mason Kocher got the complete game win, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out five
* Hunter Wyatt led Olney with two hits, a sacrifice fly, and two RBI
* Trey Puckett also had two hits and two RBI – Connor Adams added an RBI double
the Tigers improve to 10-7 overall, now at 5-2 in the Little Illini Conference
Olney has a doubleheader at home today against Robinson – first game at around 3:30 is an LIC make up

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Baseball yesterday – Newton lost a close non-LIC game on the road
the Eagles lost to Neoga, 9-8 as the host Indians outhit visiting Newton, 13 to 9
* Newton’s Brock Mammoser had a three hit game including a double, two RBI, and two runs scored
* John Grunloh had two hits, including a home run and two RBI – Connor Bierman had an RBI double
the Eagles drop back to 12-5 on the year, but still are undefeated in the LIC at 6-0
Newton is back in action today with another non-conference game on the road at Altamont

St. Joe won the six team event by beating out second place Jasper (Wayne County), 64 to 57
Wayne City was third with 51 points, followed by East Orchard with 17 points and Cisne with 5 points
* the Lady Wildcats from St. Joe had
Olney St. Joe won four of the thirteen events
* 6th grader Kenzie Weiler won both the hurdles and triple jump
* 5th grader Tatum David won both the 1600 meter run and the 800 meter run

(OLNEY)  the Richland County High School is providing sports physicals this coming Thursday to RCHS athletes at the affordable price of only $25 per athlete – the boys’ physicals will be performed by Dr. Brian Atwood from 9:45 to 11:30 Thursday morning with checks payable to Dr. Atwood – the girls’ physicals will be performed by Nurse Practitioner Melissa Kuenstler from 1:00 to 3:00 Thursday afternoon with checks payable to Richland Memorial Hospital – all physicals will be conducted in the RCHS Nurse’s Office – all athletes are required to have a current physical on file to participant in sports and all physicals are good for only one calendar year – information sheets & pre-participation forms are available in the RCHS Office

* other Midwestern winners last night were the Cubs, Brewers, and Twins
* those that loss includes the Royals, Pirates, Reds, Astros, and Braves

the Cardinals are back at home tonight with the second game of four against the Phillies in St. Louis

* Mitch Jansen got the win, pitching six innings and striking out 5 – Brock Mammoser got the save
* Tim Weber led Newton with three hits and three RBI while Nick Cohorst drove in two RBI
* Mitch Bierman, Luke Geier, and Connor Bierman each had two hits as well
the Eagles improve to 12-4 on the year, still undefeated in the Little Illini Conference, now at 6-0

the Cardinals dropped three games in a row to the Washington Nationals – the Birds have lost four straight
the Cardinals are back at home tonight with the first of four against the Philadelphia Phillies

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Softball on Friday – OCC won its playoff series to advance to the Final Four
the 4th-seeded Lady Knights won both of their games against 5th-seeded John A. Logan, 1-0 and 3-2
* OCC improves to 41-22-1 on the year and advance to play top-seeded Wabash Valley this coming Friday

the Blue Knights are scheduled to play two games today back at John A. Logan at 1:00 and 4:00
the Region 24 Tournament will be played this coming Saturday and Sunday involving the top eight teams

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Softball yesterday – the OCC Lady Knights won their first round series
the Lady Knights took two from visiting John A. Logan, 1-0 and 3-2
* the Lady Knights improve to 41-22-1 on the year – they finished fourth in the GRAC with a 19-14-1 mark
the OCC Ladies now advance to the Region 24 Final Four Tournament next weekend at Kaskaskia College

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Baseball yesterday – the OCC Blue Knights lost one on the road
the Blue Knights lost at John A. Logan, 4-2 as only one of the twinbill games could be played
game two is scheduled for a 12 noon start today, weather permitting
* the Blue Knights are now 39-15 on the year, now 15-10 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
OCC will begin postseason play in the Region 24 Tournament next weekend at home

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys High School Track – the Newton Invitational yesterday involved 15 area teams
Mattoon won the event by beating out second place Shelbyville, 116 to 98 – Robinson was third at 74
the host Eagles finished fourth with 54 points, followed by Vandalia with 51 and Effingham with 29
then it was Red Hill (24), Olney (21), Charleston (20), Teutopolis (11), and Palestine-Hutsonville (16)
then Altamont (13), St. Anthony (11), Lawrenceville (6), and Cowden-Herrick (2)

(OLNEY)  the 2016 Olney Junior Pro Football signup begins today from 11:30 to 3:00, at the Baseball Pavilion in Olney’s Musgrove Park – all Richland County students entering 3rd thru 8th grades this fall are eligible to play – there is a $40 per player registration fee – it’s important for all interested to sign up this Saturday to help the League with its purchasing and insurance purposes – if questions, call  443-618-1859 

 

(NEWTON)  Newton American Legion Post #20 will host a fundraising “pork burger sale” today to raise funds to support the Legion baseball teams – serving from 11:00 to 2:00 at the Post Home in Newton

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Tennis yesterday – Olney won a non-conference match at home the Tigers beat visiting Salem, 6 to 3 as Olney won the top five singles matches, each in two sets
* Connor Walker won the #1 singles match
* Austin Urfer won the #2 singles match
* Tanner Hendrickson won the #3 singles match
* Kye Stallard won the #4 singles match
* Marshall King won the #5 singles match
Olney won one of the three doubles matches
* Brock VanBlaricum and Peyton Williams teamed up to win the #1 doubles match in two sets
Olney split the two junior varsity matches, by winning one and losing one
now at 9-1 on the year, still 2-0 in the LIC, the Tennis Tigers play again next week

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Baseball yesterday – Olney came back to win on the road
the Tigers won at Lawrenceville, 7-5 by scoring three runs in the top of the 7th inning
visiting Olney outhit the host Indians, 9 to 7
* Olney's Dylan Hires got the complete game win by striking out eight
* Olney was led by Mason Kocher with a home run, double, and three RBI
* Tanner Hout also with two hits – Jacob Greifzu and Trey Puckett each had an RBI hit
the Tigers improve to 9-6 on the year, now 4-1 in the Little Illini Conference
Olney is back in conference action next Monday when they host the Flora Wolves

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Baseball yesterday – Newton sailed to a win at home
the Eagles shutout Robinson, 12-0 as Newton outhit the visiting Maroons, 11 to 2
* Newton's Mitch Jansen got the five inning win allowing no runs with four strikeouts
* Brock Mammoser led Newton with a double, single, and two RBI
* Luke Geier and John Grunloh each had two hits and one RBI
the Eagles improve to 11-4 on the year, still undefeated in the LIC at 5-0
Newton is back in conference action next Monday when they travel to Paris

* Paige Ginder and Larissa Michels each had an RBI single
* Sarah Hill, Kennedy Steber, and Maci Baker each had two hits apiece
the Lady Tigers improve to 2-3 in the Little Illini Conference, now 12-10 on the year

the Lady Eagles slipped by Robinson in ten innings, 4-3 as Newton outhit the visitors, 8 to 4
* Abby Frohning led Newton with a game-high three hits, including two triples and one RBI
* Allison Russell and Maddie Stanley each had an RBI hit
* Kristen Hardiek won the game with 6-plus innings of work with eight strikeouts
the Lady Eagles improve to 4-2 in the conference, now 9-8 on the year
Newton is back in Little Illini Conference action next Monday traveling to Paris

it was Mt. Carmel finishing first by beating second place Olney, 135 to 126
Carmi was third with 104 points, followed by Fairfield with 78 points and Flora with 64 points
* the second place Cubs had
Olney won four of the varsity fourteen events
* Kaleb Foster won both the high jump and 100 meter low hurdles
* Jace Greenwood, Seth Ingram, Jaedyn Moyes, and Kaleb Foster won the 400 meter relay
* Braeden Burgener won the pole vault
Olney had four 2nd place finishes in the meet
* Levi Seitzinger in the pole vault
* Trevor Zuber in the 100 meter low hurdles
* Barak Berger in the 800 meter run
* Seth Ingram, Hunter Perry, Issac Bradley, and Colton Hayes in the 800 meter relay
