(NEWTON)  in Major League Baseball over the weekend with games on both Saturday and Sunday
the Cardinals dropped two games to the Dodgers, losing Saturday night,    and last night, 9-6
* other Midwestern teams that lost two over the weekend were the Royals, Indians, and Braves
* the Midwestern teams that split two were the Cubs, Brewers, and Twins
* the Midwestern teams that won both games were the Pirates, Rangers, and Astros
* on the south side of Chicago over the weekend, the White Sox took three games from the Tigers
the Cardinals are back in action tonight with the first of three games in New York against the Mets

 

(OLNEY)  the Fifth Division Junior Legion Tournament finishes up today down in Metropolis
the postseason is on the line for the Post 30 team from Olney and Richland County
* Olney lost its tournament opener Friday afternoon falling to Steeleville, 7-2
but by winning three straight games, the Post 30 team now plays today at 12:00 noon for third place
a victory today in the tournament’s final game will also send the Olney team to the State Tournament

* Valmeyer beat Pinckneyville, 8-2
* Alton beat West Frankfort, 9-3
* and Metropolis beat Effingham, 13-7

* Salem beat Valmeyer, 14-4
* Olney eliminated Pinckneyville, 9-4 in eight innings
* Valmeyer eliminated Effingham, 5-4
* Olney eliminated West Frankfort, 16-6 in six innings

the top three teams advance to the State Junior Legion Tournament, July 28th thru 31st, up in Decatur

 

(OLNEY)  the Junior League Section One Little League Tournament ended after two games this weekend
the “best of a three game” series was played at Bill Millspaugh Field in Olney
* Olney won the first game Friday evening by beating Tri-County, 20-0 in five innings
* the Olney 13 & 14 year olds then won the tournament with a 5-0 victory Saturday over Tri-County
the Section One champs from Olney now advance to the Junior League State Tournament this weekend
while the tournament in Alsip, Illinois starts Thursday night, Olney’s first game will be Friday evening
the double elimination tournament will then continue thru the weekend as well

(OLNEY)  the Richland County High School will host its fall sports meeting on Thursday night, August 4th, at 6:00, in the RCHS Sliva Auditorium – all students who plan to participate in athletics for the 2016-2017 school year are expected to attend – parents should be in attendance as well – the RCHS athletic handbook will be reviewed, along with information from the school’s athletic trainer in conjunction with the Youth Sports Concussion Safety Act, which takes effect this school year – after the general meeting, the individual sports will breakout into separate meetings – if any questions, contact the RCHS Athletic Office

 

(OLNEY)  the O-Town Thunder 5th Grade Girls Basketball Traveling Team is currently selling “hog raffle” tickets with two winners to get a half hog, to cut their way, from Hartrich Meats in Ste. Marie – there’s only 500 tickets to be sold at $5 each with the drawing to be held August 1st or when all tickets are sold – need not be present to win – proceeds to help pay tournament costs – get tickets from any O-Town Thunder team member – also for more information or tickets, call Jonathon at  618-839-6956

 

NEWTON)  a note to Newton Eagle football fans – last year’s reserved football seat ticket holders will have a chance to retain their reserved seats starting Monday, August 1st, a week from today, by calling the Newton Community High School office at  618-783-2303  during regular office hours – the reserved seat tickets will be available for pickup on Monday & Tuesday mornings, August 8th & 9th, from 8:00 to 12 noon each morning – the general public may purchase reserved football seats from 8:00 to 12:00 noon on Monday and Tuesday mornings, August 22nd & 23rd – the cost for reserved seats is $25 per seat – also available are sports passes for all regular season sports at NCHS – for more, contact the NCHS office

 

(NEWTON)  the Jasper County School District has announced fall sports information for Junior High Sports  :  a parents meeting will be held for fall baseball, softball, and cross country on Monday evening, August 1st, at 6:00, in the Jasper County Junior High / Newton Community High School cafeteria – parents of junior high students who want to participate in either or all three sports should attend this meeting – parents will be able to fill out all necessary forms, get practice schedules, game schedules, and pay the $25 participation fee all at the same time – also, all athletes must have an up-to-date physical in order to begin practice – here’s some other important dates  :  the first practice for Junior High softball is today, this Monday morning, from 8:00 to 10:00, at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – a practice/tryout schedule will be passed out at the first practice  :  the first practice for Junior High baseball is Monday morning, August 1st, from 8:00 to 10:00, at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – a complete practice/tryout schedule will be passed out at the August 1st parent’s meeting  :  and the first practice for Junior High cross country is also Monday morning, August 1st, from 7:30 to 8:30, at the Sam Parr State Park, where all practices will be held – a complete practice schedule will be passed out to the August 1st parent’s meeting

(OLNEY)  the Fifth Division Junior Legion Tournament started yesterday in Metropolis
Olney Post 30 lost its first round game, falling to Steeleville, 7-2
* Steeleville Post 480 scored all seven of their runs in the final two innings
* along with seven of their 9 hits, Steeleville was helped out by four Olney errors
* Mason Kocher led Olney at the plate with a double and single
* Landon Pride had an RBI single - Trey Puckett and Luke Lambird scored
Olney drops to the consolation bracket and will play Pinckneyville today at 12:15pm
in the other games played yesterday at Metropolis
* in game one  :  Valmeyer beat Pinckneyville, 8-2
there are five more games today, four tomorrow, and the final game on Monday

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swim Team Competition earlier this week – Olney wins yet again
the Tigersharks won a quadrangular meet held in Olney at the Musgrove Aquatic Center
Olney finished first with a whopping 465 points and several top swimmers
the Wabash Valley team from the Mt. Carmel area was a distant second place with 76 points
Carmi finished in third place with 58 points and McLeansboro was fourth with 49 points
the Tigersharks are back in the water Saturday at the Harrisburg Invitational
the Olney swimmers have their final home meet of the summer next Tuesday night when they host Salem

 

(OLNEY)  the Fifth Division Illinois Junior Legion Baseball Tournament has been revised
the double elimination tourney in Metropolis now includes nine teams from the four downstate districts
* the District 23 teams include Olney, Effingham, and Salem
* the District 25 teams include host Metropolis, plus Steeleville
* the District 22 teams include Alton and Valmeyer
* and the District 24 teams include Pinckneyville and West Frankfort
with the new bracket, there are four games tomorrow and five on Saturday
then after four games on Sunday, the final game is on Monday
Olney Post 30 will play their first game at 2:30 tomorrow (Friday) afternoon against Steeleville
* the top three teams advance to the State Junior Legion Tournament, July 28th thru 31st, in Decatur

(NEWTON)  speaking of the weekend, the 17th Annual IHSA Officials Conference will be in East Peoria
* the Conference expects to draw over 500 statewide officials with various clinics & workshops to be held
* plus twenty “Officials of the Year” will be recognized in their respective sport
* officials will also be honored for reaching milestone years of service (15, 25, 30, 40, and 50)
the two-day event tomorrow and Saturday will sport the theme “Excellence Has No Offseason”

(NEWTON)  the Winterrowd Lodge #664 will have its Open Golf Tournament on Saturday, August 6th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – with only 25 teams to be accepted, the entry fee is $60 per person with green fees & carts furnished, plus food provided from 9:00 to 1:00 and plenty of prizes and other refreshments – tee time is at 8:00 that morning – for details or to sign up, call the Club at  618-395-1661

 

(OLNEY)  the Olney FFA Alumni 15th Annual Golf Outing & Raffle is set for Friday, August 5th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it’s lunch at 12 noon and a shotgun start at 1:00 – the cost is $50 per person or $200 for a team of four with all proceeds to sponsor FFA activities and scholarships at RCHS – team prizes include four St. Louis Cardinal tickets for the top three teams – plus raffle tickets are on sale for your Grand Prize choice of $5,000 cash or $5,000 towards a purchase of a 4-wheeler at Travco Motorsports in Olney or at an Alliance John Deere dealer – second place gets $250 and third place $100 – the drawing will be August 5th at the Golf Outing – need not be present to win – must be 16 years old – tickets are $10 each on sale from any FFA or FFA Alumni member – for details, call Jamie at  618-843-5488

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County High School will host its fall sports meeting on Thursday night, August 4th, at 6:00, in the RCHS Sliva Auditorium – all students who plan to participate in athletics for the 2016-2017 school year are expected to attend – parents should be in attendance as well – the RCHS athletic handbook will be reviewed, along with information from the school’s athletic trainer in conjunction with the Youth Sports Concussion Safety Act, which takes effect this school year – after the general meeting, the individual sports will breakout into separate meetings – if any questions, contact the RCHS Athletic Office

 

(OLNEY)  the O-Town Thunder 5th Grade Girls Basketball Traveling Team is currently selling “hog raffle” tickets with two winners to get a half hog, to cut their way, from Hartrich Meats in Ste. (NEWTON)  a note to Newton Eagle football fans – last year’s reserved football seat ticket holders will have a chance to retain their reserved seats starting Monday, August 1st, by calling the Newton Community High School office at  618-783-2303  during regular office hours – the reserved seat tickets will be available for pickup on Monday & Tuesday mornings, August 8th & 9th, from 8:00 to 12 noon each morning – the general public may purchase reserved football seats from 8:00 to 12:00 noon on Monday and Tuesday mornings, August 22nd & 23rd – the cost for reserved seats is $25 per seat – also available are sports passes for all regular season sports at NCHS – call or stop by the NCHS office for more information

 

(NEWTON)  the Jasper County School District has announced fall sports information for Junior High Sports  :  a parents meeting will be held for fall baseball, softball, and cross country on Monday evening, August 1st, at 6:00, in the Jasper County Junior High / Newton Community High School cafeteria – parents of junior high students who want to participate in either or all three sports should attend this meeting – parents will be able to fill out all necessary forms, get practice schedules, game schedules, and pay the $25 participation fee all at the same time – also, all athletes must have an up-to-date physical in order to begin practice – here’s some other important dates  :  the first practice for Junior High softball is next Monday morning, July 25th, from 8:00 to 10:00, at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – a practice/tryout schedule will be passed out at the first practice  :  the first practice for Junior High baseball is Monday morning, August 1st, from 8:00 to 10:00, at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – a complete practice/tryout schedule will be passed out at the August 1st parent’s meeting  :  and the first practice for Junior High cross country is also Monday morning, August 1st, from 7:30 to 8:30, at the Sam Parr State Park, where all practices will be held – a complete practice schedule will be passed out to the August 1st parent’s meeting

 

(OLNEY)  the 2nd Annual “Teed Off Against Child Abuse” Glow Ball Golf Tournament is this Friday night at the Mt. Carmel Golf Course, sponsored by the Wabash County Sheriff’s Department – all proceeds to benefit The Guardian Center – includes golf carts and glow balls with a 7:30 tee time and all golfers must bring their own flashlight – to sign up call Derek at  618-262-2706

 

(OLNEY)  the annual Petroleum Club of Olney’s Golf Outing is tomorrow – the 18 hole golf tournament is a four person scramble event with a shotgun start and tee times at either 8:00 or 1:00 – it’s $70 per person – various prizes and plenty of food thru the day  :  the P-Club’s Annual Picnic is also thru the day and evening on Thursday – $50 tickets are on sale with a $20,000 grand prize, five $1,000 prizes, plus more – also plenty of food throughout the day for lunch and supper – get tickets at the gate
