(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball on Tuesday, involving Midwestern teams
*  the Cardinals lost to the Pirates, 5-2 evening up the series in Pittsburgh at a game apiece
    *  elsewhere  :  the Cubs beat the Reds, 3-0  :  the White Sox lost to the Indians in 10 innings, 8-6
    *  the Royals beat the Twins, 2-1  :  the Brewers lost to San Diego, 4-1
*  the Cardinals play the Pirates today in the rubber game of the series – one of only two afternoon games
    *  all the other Midwestern teams are in action under the lights tonight

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Boys Soccer yesterday – Olney’s season opener was on the road over in Indiana
*  the Tigers played Vincennes Rivet to a 2-2 tie
*  the Olney goals were scored by Luke Hahn and Ben Lynch
*  the Tigers were also led in play yesterday by Andrew Steber and Connor Walker
*  the Soccer Tigers take part in the Charleston Tournament with three matches this Friday and Saturday

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Golf from Monday – Olney’s season opener hosted two LIC teams
*  the Tigers finished second to Robinson, 188 to 159 – Casey-Westfield was third at 217
*  Robinson’s Tom Goodman was the Match Medalist with a two over par 37
*  Olney’s top golfer was Blake Berry with a round of nine holes at 41
    *  the other top Olney golfers were Jake Kowa (47), Luke Shan (50), and Randy Goodman (50)
*  the Tigers are back on the links at home today, hosting Teutopolis and Charleston

*  in a Monday match – Carmi slipped past Lawrenceville/Red Hill, 162 to 163
*  in action yesterday – Mt. Carmel beat Lawrenceville / Red Hill, 155 to 167

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Volleyball yesterday – a few season openers were played in the area
*  in MTC action, Clay City dropped two close matches on the road down at North Wayne High School
*  Cisne won the varsity match in two close games, 25-23 and 25-22
    *  top players for Clay City were Sarah Weiler, Megan Hance, and Hannah Dulaney
*  Cisne won the junior varsity match in two games as well

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Baseball from Monday – Jasper County dropped a tough game on the road
*  the Junior Eagles lost at Charleston, 7-1
    *  in other action – South Central beat Clay City, 20-4
*  at 5&2 on the year, the Jasper County boys play tomorrow at Flora

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Cross Country news
*  yesterday’s Jasper County meet was cancelled due to the high heat and humidity levels
*  the Cross Country meet has been rescheduled for tomorrow at Sam Parr State Park starting at 4:30

(NEWTON)  the 4th annual Miss D’s 5K/10K Memorial Scholarship Run/Walk is coming up on Saturday, September 13th, in Newton – with registration forms on Facebook or at the Chamber Office or People’s State Bank in Newton, the Race Day registration is from 6:00 to 6:45 that Saturday morning, followed by race time at 7:00, all on the Square in downtown Newton – preregister by August 30th with a $20 fee and get a free t-shirt – the Race Day fee is $25 - all proceeds benefit the Carolyn Domineck Scholarship Fund

*  only one of the three Olney games were played
    *  in the 3rd & 4th Grade game – Olney defeated Fairfield, 22-8
        *  Dawson Brown ran for 126 yards on 8 carries with 2 rushing touchdowns
        *  Zachariah Wease had the other Olney touchdown on a kickoff return
        *  Carter Beard led the defense with six tackles and a forced fumble
    *  the 5th & 6th Grade team and the 7th & 8th Grade team were both rained out

    *  Brewers split two at home with Pittsburgh  :  Royals split two with the Rangers in Texas
    *  Reds and Indians each took two from Atlanta and Houston  :  Twins dropped two of three to Detroit
*  the Cardinals are in Pittsburgh for the first of three there tonight against the Pirates
    *  elsewhere  :  the Cubs, White Sox, Reds, Indians, and Twins are all idle on this Monday
    *  the Royals are at home tonight against the Yankees  :  Brewers are on the coast tonight in San Diego

 

(NEWTON)  Week Three of the National Football League preseason ended last night
*  there were eight games Saturday night, four of which involved Midwestern teams
    *  the Colts lost to the Saints, 23-17
    *  the Rams beat the Browns, 33-14
    *  the Vikings beat the Chiefs, 30-12
    *  the Titans beat the Falcons, 24-17
*  there were two games last night, one of which involved a Midwestern team
    *  the Bengals beat the Cardinals, 19-13
*  the Fourth and final week of the NFL preseason will end with all 16 games played this Thursday night

 

(OLNEY)  the Little League Baseball World Series ended yesterday out in Williamsport, Pennsylvania
*  the Illinois team, Jackie Robinson West, lost in yesterday’s championship game to South Korea, 8-4
*  on Saturday, the boys from Chicago won the United States Championship by beating Nevada, 7-5
*  in yesterday’s third place game, Japan beat Nevada, 5-0
*  the Illinois team finished the tournament with 5 wins and 2 losses
    *  the Jackie Robinson West team was first in America and second in the World

 

(NEWTON) in Junior High Softball from Saturday – the Jasper County girls were in action
*  the Junior Lady Eagles lost to Windsor / Stewardson-Strasburg, 9-8
*  top Jasper County hitters were Alison Russell and Kenzie Smith, each with two hits apiece
*  the Jasper County girls are back in action today, traveling to Charleston

    *  it’s Illinois against Nevada in today’s United States Championship game at 2:30 this afternoon

(NEWTON)  Newton Community High School and the Athletic Club invites everyone to “Media Night” coming up tonight on Chivesky Field at NCHS – the Marching Eagles will start things off with a Pre-Game Show at 6:00, followed by a note from the NCHS Athletic Boosters at around 6:15 – then the individual sponsors and coaches will introduce their athletes in five minute intervals, starting with the cheerleaders at 6:20, followed by soccer, volleyball, girls tennis, boys & girls cross country, freshmen football, and the varsity football at around 6:55 – the Newton Rotary Club will be selling pork burgers starting at 5:30 this evening, priced at only $3 per one third pound pork burger – all are invited tonight to Chivesky Field
