* Newton Senior Legion is in the Decatur Tournament today and tomorrow
* Olney Junior Legion plays today at Altamont

 

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swim competition, the Musgrove Aquatic Center will host the Olney Invitational
the 11 team event starts at 9:00 this morning, hosted by the Olney Tigersharks
* includes teams from Evansville and Greene County, Indiana, plus Effingham and Charleston
* also from Marshall, Fairfield, Mt. Carmel, McLeansboro, Carmi, and Harrisburg

 

(OLNEY)  the annual Britton’s Bullpen Summer Slam is this weekend, running both today and tomorrow
* a total of 31 teams are taking part, ranging in age from 8 to 14
* the 14U Tournament is on Musgrove Park Field #9 (east diamond)
* the 13U Tournament is on the Noble Field
* the 12U thru 8U Tournaments are all at Musgrove Park on the various fields
extra parking will be allowed in the grassy areas from the end of Florence Street extended eastward
there will be no admission and no parking fee, plus concessions will be available in Musgrove Park
six games can be heard on CBS Sports Radio WVLN and and one game on Freedom 92.9 WSEI

the Cardinals were idle as they start a three game weekend series late tonight up in Seattle
* other Midwestern teams that were also idle Thursday – the Royals, Brewers, Indians, Astros, and Rangers
* Midwestern teams that won last night were the Tigers and Braves
* Midwestern teams that lost were the Cubs, White Sox, Reds, Pirates, and Twins

 

(NEWTON)  in Senior Legion Baseball last night – Newton Post 20 lost a close game on the road
Newton lost down at Mt. Vernon, 3-1
* Matt Goedde knocked in Newton’s only run with an RBI double – Joe Stone had a single
* Luke Geier took the loss for Newton on the mound
Post 20 is now 4-2 in District action, now 6-4 overall
Newton plays tomorrow & Sunday in a tournament in Decatur, then on the road at Teutopolis Monday night

 

(OLNEY)  meanwhile, the Olney Junior Legion team plays tomorrow at Altamont, game time at 11:00

(CLAY CITY)  the Clay City Lady Wolves Volleyball team has a fundraising breakfast and raffle drawing coming up Saturday morning, July 9th, from 7:00 to 11:00, at the Clay City Community Building – gun raffle tickets will be on sale that morning – all proceeds will go to help purchase uniforms and equipment

 

(NEWTON)  the Lincoln Trail College Men’s Basketball program will host two camps for area youth next month  :  a Team Camp will be held Friday & Saturday, July 8th & 9th, with a two minute tournament on the first day, focusing on late game situations, followed by a double elimination tournament on day two – the cost is $225 per team or $400 for two teams – the fee for those that can play only one day is $125 per team  :  the Individual Summer Camp is for area youth ages 7 to 14 and will run Monday thru Wednesday, July 11th thru 13th, and will feature individual and group sessions on basketball skills, all divided by age and skill level – this cost is at $75 per camper and $50 for additional siblings – all participants receive a camp T-shirt  :  for details or to sign up, call Coach Luke Stuckey at  618-544-5299, extension 1203

(NEWTON)  in Junior Legion Baseball action last night – Olney lost a close one on the road
Newton slipped by Olney, 9-8 in a nine inning affair in Jasper County
* leading Olney’s 17-hit attack was Lucas Harmon with four hits
* Olney’s Luke Lambird and Landon Pride each had three hits apiece
now at 7-3 overall, 4-1 in league action, Olney plays at Altamont on Saturday at 11:00

the Olney Tigersharks picked up another win as they beat Fairfield in a dual meet, 502 to 160

the Cardinals are back at Chicago’s Wrigley Field for the third and final game in the series this afternoon

 

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swim Team competition from Saturday’s McLeansboro Invitational
Olney came away with another win, defeating the other six participating teams
the Tigersharks beat out second place Fairfield, 676 to 309 – Carmi was third with 308 points
then Mt. Carmel (161), Mt. Vernon, Indiana (145), McLeansboro (123), and Harrisburg (119)
Olney had ten high point winners from the event down in Hamilton County
* Blair Grove, Aubrey Lambird, Danielle Brown, Jadyn Holubek, and Maria Mayorga
* also Judah Dicks, Reid Brown, Tristan Mitchell, Noah Church, and Owen Powell
the Tigersharks hosted Fairfield last night – we’ll have the high point results tomorrow
Olney will host an 11 team invitational this coming Saturday at the Musgrove Aquatic Center

* Midwestern teams that were idle last night were the Reds, Brewers, Twins, and Royals
the Cardinals are back in action tonight for the second of three games in Chicago against the Cubs

 

(NEWTON)  in Senior Legion Baseball last night – Newton Post 20 split two games at Effingham
Newton lost the first game to Effingham, 7-3 which was Post 20’s first loss in District action
* at the plate for Newton, Tim Weber had an RBI double and Nate Meinhart had a double
* John Grunloh took the loss for Newton on the mound
Newton came back to win the second game over Effingham, 6-4
* John Grunloh led Newton with a triple, single, and a run batted in
* Matt Goedde had two singles and an RBI – Mitch Jansen had a triple
* the winning pitcher was Cole Horner, while Nate Meinhart finished the game with a save
at 4-1 in the District, now 6-3 overall – Newton will host Olney’s Junior Legion team tomorrow evening

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Football – the 42nd Annual All-Star Shrine Game was played Saturday
it featured 88 high school players & was played at Tucci Stadium at Illinois Wesleyan University in Normal
* the West Team, which involved mostly upstate players, beat the East Team, 34-12
there are a few downstate players on the East Team roster – they included  :
* Offensive Lineman Bodee Steber from the Newton Eagles
* also Casey-Westfield’s  Wide Receiver / Tight End Cory Carver
* plus others from Sullivan, Taylorville, Monticello, Centralia, Murphysboro, Eldorado, and Herrin
all funds raised will go to Shriners Hospitals to continue free medical care for children
