(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball on Thursday, involving Midwestern teams
the Cardinals lost to the Mets, 5-0 as the series was split with two wins and two losses
elsewhere  :  Cubs beat Padres, 3-0  :  Indians beat White Sox, 5-2  :  Braves beat Brewers, 10-1
Tigers beat Astros, 6-5 in 11 innings  :  the Reds, Royals, Pirates, and Twins were all idle yesterday
* it’s a full 15 game schedule on this Friday, seven of which involve Midwestern teams
the Cardinals are in Kansas City to start a three game series tonight against the Royals
elsewhere  :  Cubs are at Arizona  :  Reds are in Cleveland  :  White Sox will host the Twins
Brewers are in Atlanta  :  Astros are in Detroit  :  Pirates host the Mets

 

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Girls Class 1A Track & Field preliminaries were yesterday at EIU in Charleston
six of the ten Newton Lady Eagles qualified for tomorrow’s finals in four different events
* McKendra Barthelme in the high jump
* McKendra Barthelme in the 110 meter high hurdles
* McKendra Barthelme, Taylor Johnson, Brooke Koebele, and Hannah Litzelman in the 800 meter relay
* Lexie Davidson, Taylor Johnson, Hannah Litzelman, and Emma Weber in the 1600 meter relay
several other area girls qualified for the Class 1A finals coming up tomorrow at O’Brien Stadium
* those from Effingham St. Anthony, Teutopolis, Marshall, Flora, Bridgeport (Red Hill), and Neoga
the Class 2A and 3A preliminaries are today with the finals also to be held tomorrow

 

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Boys Class 2A Track & Field Sectional was held yesterday at Mattoon
the Olney Tigers finished tied for 7th place with Mt. Zion out of the total 15 teams
two Olney Tigers were 1st or 2nd in three events as they qualified for the 2A State Meet next weekend
* Tate Nohren won the 110 meter high hurdles
* Gus Lathrop was 2nd in the 100 meter dash
* Gus Lathrop was 2nd in the 200 meter dash
others advancing includes those from Effingham, Mattoon, Charleston, and Mt Zion

 

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Boys Class 1A Track & Field Sectional was held yesterday at Lawrenceville
the Newton Eagles finished in 2nd place out of the 15 teams that took part
six Newton Eagles either won or finished 2nd in their events, qualifying for the State Meet next weekend
* Matthew Tolliver-Goode, Joseph Stone, Zack Lewis, and Kieth King won the 1600 meter relay
* Mitch Bierman, Joseph Stone, Zack Lewis, and Matthew Tolliver-Goode were 2nd in the 400 meter relay
* Cody Riddle was 2nd in the shot put and 2nd in the discus throw
* Joseph Stone was 2nd in the 800 meter run
others advancing are from Robinson, Casey-Westfield, Cumberland, Palestine, Flora, Teutopolis, & Patoka

the Tigers lost at Mt. Vernon, 9-2 although each team banged out 10 hits apiece
* Olney’s Luke Lambird had 3 singles, Tyler Zuber had a double & single, and Luke Hahn had 2 singles
now at 16&12 on the year, the Tigers are in Class 3A Regional action next Monday afternoon
the 4th-seeded Tigers will host 5th-seeded Centralia at Bill Millspaugh Field at ERHS in Olney

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Tennis – the IHSA Sectionals are tomorrow around the state
the Olney Tigers are among eight teams competing down at the Herrin High School
the Newton Eagles are among ten teams competing up at Casey-Westfield High School
the top four singles and doubles will advance to next weekend’s State Tournament in the Chicagoland

the camps will run each day, Tuesday thru Friday, May 26th thru 29th, with a $35 per girl fee
* Session One for girls entering grades 6-8 from 9:00 to 11:00 each morning in Ron Herrin Gym at ERHS
* Session Two for girls entering grades 1-5 from 12:00 to 2:00 each afternoon at the Elementary School
pre-registration is preferred by May 22nd – forms also accepted a half hour before Tuesday’s first sessions
application forms available at the Olney schools or contact Coach Mark Anselment in Olney

Class 2A @ Paris  :  the host Tigers had a walk-off win over Marshall, 4-3
Class 2A @ Du Quoin  :  Benton beat Zeigler-Royalton, 18-8
Class 1A @ Dieterich  :  Effingham St. Anthony beat Beecher City, 16-0

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Tennis yesterday – the LIC Conference Tennis Match was played in Olney
the host Tigers won the six team event by beating 2nd place Casey-Westfield, 22.5 to 17
* Flora was 3rd at 15.5, Robinson was 4th at 12.5, Newton was 5th at 11.5, and Paris was 6th with 7 points
Olney had two 2nd’s, one 3rd, and one 5th place in the match finals
* in doubles – Connor Walker and Brock VanBlaricum had wins over those from Robinson and Newton
   the Tiger pair then finished in 2nd place, after losing in the championship match to a Casey-Westfield pair
* in singles action – Derek Walker had wins over players from Robinson and Paris
   the Olney Tiger then finished in 2nd place, after losing in the championship match to a player from Flora
* in doubles – Austin Urfer and Cameron Pearcy beat a Flora pair then lost to a pair from Casey-Westfield
   the Tiger pair then won the 3rd place match by beating a pair from Newton
* in singles action – Sterling Hostetter lost his first match to a Robinson player, then beat a Flora player
   the Olney Tiger then won the 5th place match by beating a player from Robinson
* congratulations to the Olney Tigers named to the All Conference Tennis Team
   Connor Walker, Brock VanBlaricum, and Derek Walker were named to the All Conference First Team

the other top five teams were Highland, Durand, Minooka, and Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond
the downstate finishers included 7th place Benton and 13th place Pinckneyville
also 26th place West Frankfort and 32nd place South Central
* our local and area teams competed earlier this month at Forbes Lake, near Omega, in Marion County
South Central won the event, followed by teams from Carlyle, Salem, Teutopolis, Wayne City, and Newton
the top three teams advanced to the State Tournament at Carlyle Lake this past Friday and Saturday

the Tigers fell to Centralia, 5-1 as Olney was outhit by the host Orphans, 8 to 5
* Gage Miller led Olney at the plate with 2 hits
now at 16&11, the Tigers are back in non-conference action tomorrow, traveling to Charleston

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Tennis – the LIC Conference Match started with first round action
all the LIC Boys Tennis teams were in Olney yesterday for the start on the match
the action will resume in Olney this afternoon at 4:30 with the finals set for later this evening

(OLNEY)  the Athletic Department at Wabash Valley College will host its fundraising Golf Scramble on Friday, June 5th, at the Mt. Carmel Golf Course – it’s lunch at 12:00 noon and a shotgun start at 1:00 – it’s $50 per player or $200 per team of four – plenty of prizes – for more details, call WVC at  618-263-5021

 

(OLNEY)  the annual Olney Lady Tiger Youth Basketball Camp is coming up next week
the camps will run each day, Tuesday thru Friday, May 26th thru 29th, with a $35 per girl fee
* Session One for girls entering grades 6-8 from 9:00 to 11:00 each morning in Ron Herrin Gym at ERHS
* Session Two for girls entering grades 1-5 from 12:00 to 2:00 each afternoon at the Elementary School
pre-registration is preferred by May 22nd – forms also accepted a half hour before Tuesday’s first sessions
application forms available at the Olney schools or contact Coach Mark Anselment in Olney

(NEWTON)  the Lincoln Trail College Volleyball program will host a Youth Volleyball Camp this coming Saturday morning from 9:00 to 12:00 noon in the LTC Sports Center – it’s for students entering 4th thru 6th grades this fall and the camp will focus on the fundamentals of volleyball – the cost is only $20 per player and those that bring two or more teammates will get a $5 discount per player – that’s on the campus of Lincoln Trail College, just east and north of Robinson – for more, contact Coach Kristen Selph at LTC

the Cardinals split two with Detroit, losing Saturday, 4-3 in 10 innings, but winning yesterday, 2-1
elsewhere  :  Cubs split with Pirates  :  Reds lost two to Giants  :  White Sox swept two from Oakland
Royals split with Yankees  :  Astros swept two from Toronto  :  Braves swept two from Miami
Twins split with Tampa Bay  :  Indians split two with Texas  : 
* there are only seven games today, four of which involve Midwestern teams
the Cardinals start a four game series tonight in New York against the Mets
Indians at White Sox  :  Brewers at Detroit  :  Oakland at Houston

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Track at the Newton Class 1A Sectional – the host Lady Eagles won
Newton beat Teutopolis, 155 to 87 – Marshall was third with 68 points, followed by St. Anthony (53)
* Neoga was fifth (43), then Red Hill (31), Robinson (30), Altamont (27), Flora (22), and Palestine (22)
* the other teams were Casey-Westfield (8), Lawrenceville (6), Cumberland (5), and Brownstown (1)
all four Newton relays and eight Lady Eagle individual events advance to the State Meet this weekend
Newton won seven of the eighteen events, with five second place finishes, all going to the State Meet
* Hannah Litzelman won the 200 meter dash
* Lexie Davidson won the 800 meter run
* McKendra Barthelme won the 100 meter hurdles
* McKendra Barthelme won the 300 meter hurdles
* McKendra Barthelme won the long jump
* McKendra Barthelme, Brooke Koebele, Alex Haarman, and Taylor Johnson won the 800 meter relay
* Alli Kline, Emma Weber, Taylor Johnson, and Hannah Litzelman won the 1600 meter relay
* Grace Hartrich was 2nd in the discus throw

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Track – the Clinton Class 2A Sectional was held at Millikin University
Monticello beat Charleston, 86.67 to 75 – Mahomet-Seymour was third with 66.50 points
* Mattoon was fourth at 60.50, Mt. Zion was fifth at 49.17, followed by Clinton (40.17)
* then Champaign Centennial (37.17), Bloomington Central Catholic (36.50), Decatur Eisenhower (26.17)
* then Champaign Central (22), Decatur MacArthur (19), Urbana (16), Effingham (7.17)
* the other teams were Olney (6), Rantoul (5), and Mt. Carmel (5)
none of the Olney athletes advanced to the State Meet this weekend, but there were some good finishes
the Lady Tigers had four top nine finishes
* Jynsen Yonaka was 4th in the 400 meter dash
* Payton Blakney, Lauren Eagleson, Faith Stallard, and Holly Stallard was 5th in the 3200 meter relay
* Mary Grace Inyart was 8th in the discus throw
* Holly Stallard was 8th in the 1600 meter run

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Soccer Friday night – Olney lost a tough match at home to end its season
it was the championship match of the Class 1A Regional at Musgrove Field in Olney
* Breese Mater Dei defeated Olney, 4-0 despite a lot of hard play and effort by the Lady Tigers
* Olney finishes the season with 10 wins and only 5 losses – congrats to the Lady Tigers on a good season
Breese Mater Dei moves on the Columbia Sectional tomorrow night

 

(OLNEY)  while most all sporting events were cancelled Saturday – there was some baseball & softball
* although one game was started, the rain eventually cancelled the Olney Lady Tiger Classic at ERHS
* the Olney Tigers were cancelled in a baseball doubleheader against Harrisburg
