the visiting Giants took game one with a 7-1 victory over the host Royals in Kansas City
game two is tonight, also with a 7:07 start – the series moves to San Francisco for game three Friday night

 

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Boys Soccer postseason semi-finals were last night – here’s some downstate results
Class 1A Sectional @ Raymond  :  the Olney Tigers lost a tough battle, falling to Decatur Lutheran, 1-0
   *  the Soccer Tigers finish the year as Regional Champs with 10 wins, 4 losses, and 4 ties – a great year!
Class 1A Sectional @ Edwardsville  :  Trenton Wesclin beat East Alton Wood River, 4-3
Class 1A Sectional @ Edwardsville  :  Columbia beat Anna-Jonesboro, 7-6
Class 2A Regional @ Mattoon  :  Mattoon beat Effingham, 3-0  :  Charleston beat Mt. Zion, 2-0
Class 2A Regional @ Waterloo  :  Waterloo beat Salem, 6-0  :  Breese Mater Dei beat Mascoutah, 2-0
Class 2A Regional @ Carbondale  :  Marion beat Centralia, 5-1  :  Cardondale beat Mt. Vernon, 4-0
Class 2A Regional @ Alton  :  Troy Triad beat Highland, 1-0
*  the Sectional Championships and the Regional Championships are this weekend at their respective sites

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Cross Country yesterday – Newton split two meets at Sam Parr State Park
the Lady Eagles won the girls meet, beating Robinson, 19 to 44 – Mt. Carmel was third with no score
  *  Newton’s Lexie Davidson won the race, followed by Mt. Carmel’s Madelin Jones in 2nd place
     *  by the way, Davidson’s time of 17:20 set a new school and course record yesterday – congratulations!
  *  Newton’s Emma Weber was 4th, Veronica Ochs was 5th, and Hallie Powers was 6th
  *  Newton’s Taylor Brown, Natalie Woods, and Maddie Geier were 8th, 9th, and 10th respectively
on the boys side, the Eagles finished 2nd to Robinson, 42 to 25 – Mt. Carmel was 3rd with 67 points
  *  Newton’s top runner was Collin Harris in 5th while teammate Trenton Gonzalez was 6th
  *  Newton’s Crayton Chesnut finished in 8th place, while Mike Carr was 15th
  *  Mt. Carmel’s Brady Wilkinson won the race
  *  Robinson’s Noah Tennison, Joey Wright, and Henry Treadway were 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively
the Newton runners now prepare for this Saturday’s Cross Country Regional at Effingham

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls Junior High Basketball last night – the Middle School girls split their season openers
the Lady Cubs won the 8th grade game over Paris Mayo, 41-29
  *  Olney was led by Taylor LeCrone with 14 points and Colleen Inyart with 11 points]
Olney lost the 7th grade game, 23-17
the Lady Cubs are back in action Saturday at the Wayne County Jasper Shootout against St. Mary’s

 

(OLNEY)  also last night in Girls Junior High Hoops – Olney St. Joe dropped two games at home
the Lady Wildcats lost a very close 8th grade game to North Clay, 27-25
  *  St. Joe was led by Kayley Young with 11 points
Olney St. Joe also lost the 7th grade game, 31-19
the St. Joe Ladies are back in action next Tuesday down at Cisne

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls Junior High Basketball this past Monday night – Newton / Jasper County won two
the Junior Lady Eagles won the 8th grade game over North Clay, 29-21
  *  the Jasper County girls were led by Mallory Bergbower with 18 points and 20 rebounds
Newton also won the 7th grade game, 24-9
the Junior Lady Eagles last night played at Flora

 

(OLNEY)  the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association was busy this past Saturday
the downstate Girls Class S State Cross Country Meet was held at Salem
  *  the Olney St. Joe Lady Wildcats finished 3rd among 36 downstate teams represented with runners
St. Bruno / Pinckneyville won the meet with 72 points  :  Nashville was 2nd at 83  :  St. Joe was 3rd at 120
rounding out the top 8 schools were Bluford, O’Fallon Baptist, Willow Grove, Field Jr. High, & Woodlawn
other notable teams  :  Wayne City was 17th  :  Allendale was 24th  :  plus Iuka and New Hebron Christian
  *  out of 190 runners, St. Joe had six girls place among the top 40 runners on the 1.86 mile course
  *  Evelyn Atkins was 17th : Haven Doll was 18th : Danielle Clodfelter was 28th : Kenzie Weiler was 29th 
  *  Tatum David was 31st : Tristen Payne was 39th : the other Lady Wildcat runner was Maci Burgener

then Smithton, Marion, Salem, Herrin, Centralia, and Wesclin ahead of Olney
  *  out of the 163 runners, Olney had two girls place among the top 60 runners on the 1.8 mile course
  *  Cameron Hough was 9th overall  :  Hope Laughlin was 55th
  *  other Olney runners were Tara Hughes, Olivia Nix, Macy Piercefield, Gracie Julian, & Morgan Puckett

Triad won the meet with 59 points  :  2nd place Marion had 84 points  :  3rd place Waterloo had 88 points
O’Fallon Fulton was 4th  :  O’Fallon Carriel was 5th  :  then the Olney Cubs were 6th
rounding out the top ten were Centralia, Collinsville, West Frankfort, and Herrin
  *  out of the 162 runners, Olney had four boys place among the top 60 runners on the 1.8 mile course
  *  Chase Williams was 6th overall  :  Trey Nosek was 34th  :  Brady Thompson was 47th
  *  Owen Powell was 55th  :  Dylan Seessengood was 58th  :  others were Jaedyn Moyes & Mac Alexander

(OLNEY)  the Olney Cubs Wrestling Team will have a fundraising “bake sale” on Saturday, November 8th, at the Olney IGA Store, from 9:00 to 1:00 – proceeds will help with traveling expenses and equipment

 

(OLNEY)  tryouts for the 6th Grade Boys Basketball Team will be held next Monday and Tuesday night, from 5:30 to 6:45 each evening, at the ERHS Ron Herrin Gym – all 6th grade boys that want to play must tryout and should attend both nights – a $40 fee will apply to any boy that makes the team – an updated physical exam is required – if questions, call Coach Franklin at 395-4372 or Coach Flanagan at 393-2191

(NEWTON)  Week Seven of the National Football League ended last night in Pittsburgh
the host Steelers used a 24-point 2nd quarter to beat the Houston Texans, 30-23
Week Eight of the NFL will kick off this coming Thursday night with the Chargers and Broncos in Denver

(OLNEY)  in Boys & Girls High School Cross Country yesterday – Olney ran well at the Benton Invite
the Tigers finished 3rd overall in the boys race
  *  Olney’s top runner, Matthew DeVenecia was 11th, Dalyn Brach was 16th, and Silven Stallard was 33rd
the Lady Tigers also finished 3rd overall in the girls race
  *  Olney’s top runner, Kylar Craig was 27th, Lauren Eagleson was 28th, and Aaron Bromm was 31st
the Tigers finished 2nd in the boys fresh/soph race
  *  Olney’s Nathan DeMeyer won the race, Michael DeMeyer was 3rd, and Addison Craig was 5th
the Olney runners now prepare for the Regional Cross Country Meet this Saturday at Effingham

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Volleyball last night – Newton swept two matches at home
the Lady Eagles won the varsity match over Dieterich in two games, 25-18 and 25-5
  *  Newton’s top players were Taylor Johnson, Kaitlin Cohorst, Brooke Koebele, and Hannah Litzelman
Newton also won the junior varsity match in two games – the jv Lady Eagles improve to 14&1 on the year
now at 19&10, the varsity Lady Eagles will host Paris during Senior Night this Thursday night at NCHS

the Lady Wolves lost the varsity match to Oblong in three close games, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25
  *  Oblong was led by Emily Lockhart, Samantha Pepmeier, and Kelci Dunlap
  *  Clay City’s top players were Sarah Weiler, Megan Hance, and Macy Hance
Clay City won the junior varsity match in two games

  *  the victory came on a penalty kick made by Derek Walker – Tiger goalie Tyler Zuber had 8 saves
  *  the Soccer Tigers improve to 10 wins, 3 losses, and 4 ties and will play again tomorrow night at 7:00
  *  the Tigers advance to the Raymond Sectional with a semi-final match against Springfield Lutheran

  *  Woodlawn won both matches last night in two games over Cisne and Wayne City
4th-seeded Wayne City beat 2nd-seeded Cisne in three games to claim 2nd place in the tournament
2nd-seeded Cisne finished in 3rd place
3rd-seeded Grayville won the 4th place trophy with two game wins over North Clay and Clay City

the National League Championship Series ended in San Francisco
  *  the Giants beat the Cardinals in game five, 6-3 with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth
  *  winning the NLCS four games to one, the Giants advance to the 2014 World Series
it’ll be Kansas City hosting San Francisco in game one of the World Series next Tuesday night at 7:07

 

(NEWTON)  Week Seven of the National Football League started last night
it was the New England Patriots holding on to be the New York Jets, 27-25
there will be thirteen games on Sunday with Week Seven ending next Monday night in Pittsburgh

the Lady Tigers won the varsity match over Newton in three games, 13-25, 25-17, 25-20

  *  Newton was led by Alli Kline, Taylor Johnson, Brooke Koebele, and Hannah Litzleman
Newton won the junior varsity match in two games and the fresh/soph match in two games

  *  5th-seeded Clay City beat 8th-seeded Odin in two games to finish second in Pool A
@ Cisne – 2nd-seeded Cisne beat Sandoval in two games and North Clay in three games to win Pool B
  *  7th-seeded North Clay beat 6th-seeded Sandoval in two games to finish second in Pool B
@ Wayne City – 4th-seeded Wayne City beat Grayville and Webber, both in two games each, to win Pool C
  *  3rd-seeded Grayville beat 9th-seeded Webber Township to finish second in Pool C
that sets up the finals tonight at Clay City with matches in two gyms at 6:00, 7:00, and 8:00 respectively
  *  Woodlawn, Cisne, and Wayne City will play in the Junior High Gym for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places

(EFFINGHAM)  last Saturday’s Effingham Marching Band Invitational had 20 bands in five classes
in Class 4A – the Olney Marching Tigers finished 2nd out of four bands
  *  Salem won Class 4A, followed by Olney, Charleston, and Taylorville
  *  the Marching Tigers won the Percussion competition, was 2nd in Auxiliary, and 3rd in Drum Major
in Class 3A – the Newton Marching Eagles won the class with four other bands taking part
  *  following Newton was Breese Mater Dei, Paris, Carterville, and Vandalia
  *  the Marching Eagles won the Drum Major and Auxiliary competitions while finishing 2nd in Percussion
in Class 1A – the Oblong Marching Panthers won the class with four other bands taking part
  *  following Oblong was Okaw Valley, Casey-Westfield, Arthur-Lovington, and Sangamon Valley
  *  the Marching Panthers won both the Percussion and Auxiliary competitions with a 2nd in Drum Major
in Class 2A – Sullivan won the class while Nashville was 2nd and Georgeton-Ridge Farm was 3rd
in Class 5A – Highland won the class with Triad finishing 2nd
*  the Marching Tigers are back in competition tomorrow at the U of I Marching Festival in Champaign
