Friday  :  the Cardinals begin a three game series late tonight in L.A. against the Dodgers
Friday  :  the Cubs are in Cincinnati to play the Reds  :  the White Sox are at home with Miami


 
(OLNEY)  the IHSA Boys State Tennis Tournament started yesterday at 9 different sites in Chicago  :
*  Olney’s Nick Kuhl & Derek Walker lost their first round match to an Oak Park pair in two sets
*  Nick and Derek then beat a Tinley Park pair in three sets in the first round of consolation play
*  then Nick & Derek were eliminated with a second round loss to a New Lenox pair in two sets
*  congratulations to the Olney doubles team on a great year in conference and postseason play
*  others are from Robinson, Effingham, Teutopolis, Casey, Salem, Centralia, Fairfield, and Mt. Carmel
*  the double elimination tournament continues today with the finals set for tomorrow thru tomorrow night


 
(NEWTON)  the IHSA Boys Class 1A State Track preliminaries were yesterday at EIU in Charleston  :
*  out of ten Newton Eagles competing in seven events, only one qualified for tomorrow’s finals
        *  Brandon Tolliver-Goode will compete in Saturday’s Class 1A Finals in the pole vault
*  other area qualifiers for the Class 1A State Finals tomorrow on Saturday 
    *  Casey-Westfield’s Josh Blome and Riley Smith, both in the pole vault
    *  Neoga’s Corey Kersey in the high jump
    *  Stewardson-Strasburg’s Jason Frey and Robinson's Nic Iovanac, both in the shot put

(OLNEY)  the Ladies Fastpitch Softball “League of Our Own” in Olney will have an informational meeting on Saturday morning, June 1st, at Ophelia’s Cup in Olney, starting at 10:00 – the League is looking for teams for the upcoming season, which is scheduled to start July 1st and continue thru the season-ending League Tournament set for the first week of October, with all games to be played in Musgrove Park – all players must be a freshmen in high school or older – the League is a part of the Richland County Athletic Association, a strictly non-profit organization – for details, call Ed at 618-837-0662 or 618-838-1522

 

(FLORA)  it’s another full night of racing tomorrow night at the Clay County Speedway, just north of Flora – the UMP Modified Bash and the oval’s Mid-Season Demolition Derby will be the night’s special events, plus an “autograph session” will be held with all drivers – gates open at 5:00 with racing at 7:30, plus check it all out online, at www.claycountyspeedway.net – that’s at the Clay County Speedway tomorrow night

 

(NEWTON)  the Lake Land College Foundation will host the 16th annual “golf classic” today at Meadowview Golf Course, near Mattoon – it’s registration and lunch at 11:00 with a shotgun start at 12 noon – then a dinner with awards and prizes will follow – the entry fee is at $125 per player

(NEWTON)  speaking of Major League Baseball – congratulations to Newton native Ross Wolf who made his first big league start yesterday for the Texas Rangers, picking up a Major League victory – Wolf gave up one earned run on three hits to the Oakland A’s, who came into yesterday’s game on a five-game winning streak – Wolf worked into the sixth inning before being replaced – the Rangers won the game, 3 to 1


 
(OLNEY)  in high school softball yesterday – Olney had its season end over in Marion County  :
*  the Lady Tigers lost their Class 3A Regional semi-final game to Centralia, 4-3
*  Olney’s pitcher Elizabeth Walker allowed no earned runs while striking out six
*  Walker also had a hit and two RBI’s – Rachel Wisner homered and Kenzie Zwilling had a hit as well
*  the Lady Tigers finish the season with an overall record of 22&11 – congratulations on a winning year

(OLNEY)  in high school baseball yesterday – Olney lost a nearly three hour marathon game at home  :
*  the Tigers had their season end at the hands of Effingham, 4-2 in a 12 inning affair at Millspaugh Field
*  the visiting Hearts outhit Olney, 14 to 9 while a combined total of 21 runners were left on base
*  Olney’s Dallas Peck had a three hit day with a run scored – Nolan Shan had an RBI single & stolen base
*  Effingham’s Devin Mayfield threw the complete game striking out 8 with a total of 167 pitches thrown
*  the Tigers end the 2013 season with an overall record of  19 wins and 9 losses
*  the Hearts improve to 17&13 and advance to semi-final action against top-seeded Salem tomorrow
*  the other semi-final game Thursday features Charleston against Mattoon – the championship is Saturday

Class 2A @ Du Quoin  :  West Frankfort plays Nashville
Class 1A @ Odin  :  Edwards County plays Altamont
Class 1A @ Moweaqua  :  Ramsey plays Cumberland

(OLNEY)  several sports camps are coming up in Olney – here’s the local list of activities coming up  :
*  the Olney Tiger Boy’s Basketball Camp is May 28th thru 31st with the cost at $40 per player – for those in grades 1 thru 3 from 8:00 to 9:30 at the ERES Gym – for those in grades 4 and 5 from 9:30 to 11:30 at the ERES Gym – for those in grades 6 thru 8 from 1:00 to 3:00 in ERHS Ron Herrin Gym – forms are available at local schools or by contacting Coach Rob Flanagan
*  the Olney Lady Tigers Youth Basketball Camps are June 3rd thru 6th at the Elementary School in Olney at a cost of $35 per player – for those in grades 1 thru 3 from 8:30 to 10:00 each morning – for those in grades 4 thru 6 from 10:30 to 12 noon – forms available at local schools or contact Coach Mark Anselment
*  the Olney Tiger Recreation Boy’s Basketball program will run June 3rd thru July 12th for those in grades 4 thru 12, all to be held at ERHS – for details or forms, contact Coach Flanagan at 618-393-7072
*  the Richland Country Club Junior Golf Program will be held on six consecutive Monday mornings, beginning June 3rd, for area boys & girls going into grades 3 thru 9 – at $50 per player, it’s instruction from ERHS Coach Curt Nealis & PGA Pro / RCC Manager Brian Workman, covering putting, chipping, swing fundamentals, & all the rules and etiquette of golf – players must supply their own clubs – call 839-5726

 

(OLNEY)  the Ladies Fastpitch Softball “League of Our Own” in Olney will have an informational meeting on Saturday morning, June 1st, at Ophelia’s Cup in Olney, starting at 10:00 – the League is looking for teams for the upcoming season, which is scheduled to start July 1st and continue thru the season-ending League Tournament set for the first week of October, with all games to be played in Musgrove Park – all players must be a freshmen in high school or older – the League is a part of the Richland County Athletic Association, a strictly non-profit organization – for details, call Ed at 618-837-0662 or 618-838-1522

 

(NEWTON)  the Lake Land College Foundation will host the 16th annual “golf classic” on this Friday, May 24th, at Meadowview Golf Course, near Mattoon – it’s registration and lunch at 11:00 that morning with a shotgun start at 12 noon – then a dinner with awards and prizes will follow – the entry fee is at $125 per player – all proceeds to the LLC Foundation – for details or to sign-up, call Amanda at 217-234-5445

Saturday & Sunday  :  the Cardinals split two with Milwaukee, losing Saturday & winning yesterday
Saturday & Sunday  :  Cubs & Reds split with the Mets & Phillies  :  White Sox lost two to the Angels
Monday  :  the Cardinals start an eight game road trip with the first of three in San Diego late tonight
Monday  :  the Cubs are idle  :  the White Sox host the Red Sox  :  the Reds play the Mets in New York

 

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Girls State Track Meets were Saturday at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston  :
*  as a team, Newton finished with seven other teams tied for 32nd place with 8 points
    *  Newton’s lone state qualifier was McKendra Barthelme
        *  McKendra finished fifth in the long jump and seventh in the 100 meter high hurdles
        *  congratulations to the Lady Eagle freshman on a job well done in representing Jasper County
*  Central A & M won the Girls Class 1A State Track Meet – Windsor finished 30th – Marshall was 43rd

 

(OLNEY)  the Boys Track Sectionals were held Friday – we’ll have local results later this week


 
(OLNEY)  IHSA Boys Tennis Sectionals were Saturday – the top four singles & doubles advance to state  :
*  the Olney Tigers tied for third place as a team with Highland and Greenville, each with 6 points
    *  O’Fallon won the Sectional with 23 points, while host Centralia was second with 17 points
    *  in doubles – Olney’s Nick Kuhl and Derek Walker finished second
    *  Kuhl and Walker now advance to this weekend’s State Tennis Tournament in the Chicagoland suburbs
*  other downstate sectional winners and state qualifiers
    *  Effingham won the Casey Sectional, followed by Charleston, St. Anthony, T-town, and Mattoon
        *  state qualifiers from St. Anthony, Robinson, Teutopolis, Effingham, Charleston, & Casey-Westfield
    *  Carbondale won its own Sectional, followed by Mt. Vernon, Mt. Carmel, Waterloo Gibault, & Marion
        *  state qualifiers from Carbondale, Mt. Vernon, Mt. Carmel, Carmi, and Marion


 
(NEWTON)  in high school softball on Saturday – Newton had it season come to an end  :
*  the Lady Eagles lost the regional championship game to Fairfield, 4-3
*  Newton finishes the season with a 17&9 overall record


 
(NOBLE)  also in high school softball Saturday – Noble / Clay City had its season come to an end  :
*  the Lady Wildcats lost the regional championship game to Edwards County, 11-3
*  the Lady Wildcats finish the season with an overall record of  8&12
