* Pittsburgh held on to beat Tampa Bay, 2-1 as the Penguins win the Eastern Conference crown
the Stanley Cup best-of-seven series will begin next Monday night in Pittsburgh
it will be the San Jose Sharks up against the Penguins of Pittsburgh trying to win Lord Stanley’s Cup

 

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball with a limited Thursday night schedule
the Cardinals lose the first of four in Washington, falling to the Nationals, 2-1
* the Midwestern winners last night were the Brewers, Pirates, and Astros while the Braves won
* the White Sox & Royals were rained out  :  the Cubs, Reds, Indians, Tigers, and Twins were all idle
the Cardinals are back in Washington tonight to battle the Nationals

 

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Boys State Tennis Tournament began yesterday in the suburbs of Chicago
there were three rounds of action in both singles & doubles competition, plus consolation round play
* the Olney pair, Austin Urfer and Connor Walker, unfortunately lost their first round match in two sets
* Urfer and Walker were then eliminated in the consolation round match in two sets and a tie breaker
congratulations to the Olney Tigers for making it to the State Tennis Tournament
* others eliminated yesterday are from Teutopolis, Effingham, Shelbyville, Mattoon, and Mt. Vernon
* others advancing to today’s action are those from Effingham, Teutopolis, and Effingham St. Anthony
the double elimination tournaments continue today and end tomorrow


 
(NEWTON)  the IHSA Boys State Track Meets are this weekend on the EIU campus in Charleston
the Class 1A Preliminaries were yesterday in O’Brien Stadium
all eight Newton Eagles qualified to compete in their six of eighteen events in tomorrow’s Class 1A Finals
* Nick Cartright in both the shot put and discus throw
* Joe Stone in the 800 meter run
* Brock Mammoser in the pole vault
* Mitch Bierman, Keith King, Tim Weber, and Rhett Kocher in the 800 meter relay
* Kirk Johnson, Keith King, Joe Stone, and Tim Weber in the 1600 meter relay
a host of other area athletes also qualified for tomorrow's Class 1A Track Finals, including those from

(OLNEY)  the Olney Central College baseball program will host their annual High School Showcase on Wednesday, June 8th, at Dennis Conley Field at OCC – all area high school age players are encouraged to take part as all position players will be evaluated on foot speed, throwing accuracy, arm strength, fielding ability, and hitting skills – pitchers will be evaluated on arm strength, control, secondary pitches, make-up, and more – registration for the position players begins at 9:00 that morning with the session running from 9:30 to 12:30 – registration for pitchers will start at 1:00 with the session running from 1:30 until it’s over – the cost is $60 for one session or $90 for both – registration forms are due back to OCC by June 3rd – late registration forms accepted that day will include an additional $10 – for more, call OCC at  618-395-7777

it was Class 2A Sectional Semi-Final action at the Teutopolis High School baseball field
the Eagles held on to beat Piasa Southwestern, 10-9 although the Birds outhit Newton, 12 to 11
* Brock Mammoser pitched the final three innings to get the win for Newton
* Mitch Bierman had three hits, including a triple and two RBI
* Nate Meinhart had three hits, including a double and two RBI
* Beau Prater had a two RBI hit and Luke Geier doubled and scored a run
in the second Semi-Final Game, Teutopolis beat Trenton Wesclin, 6-1
while the Eagles improve to 19-9 on the year, Teutopolis improves to 25-9 on the season
Newton will play the host Wooden Shoes in the Sectional Championship game Saturday morning at 10:00

(NEWTON)  the Lincoln Trail College baseball team will host its Summer Exposure Showcase this Sunday at Parker Field on the campus of Lincoln Trail College east & north of Robinson – it will be infielders, outfielders, and catchers showcasing their abilities in a pro-style workout in the morning session, followed by a live baseball game in the afternoon – registration begins at 9:00, pitchers should check-in at 10:45, with the game to start at 12:30 – the cost is $75 per position player and per pitcher or $100 for both – all players, including catchers, should bring their own gear, bat, and glove – it’s a chance for area high school baseball players to get close-up exposure to various college baseball staffs from throughout the country

* the St. Louis Blues beat the Sharks Saturday, 6-3 to even up the best-of-seven series at two games each
* the Tampa Bay Lightning beat Pittsburgh, 4-3 in overtime yesterday
the Blues will host the Sharks in St. Louis tonight in game five – it’s ice time at 7:00 this Monday night

 

(NEWTON)  in Major League Baseball over the weekend involving Midwestern teams
the Cardinals split their games with Arizona, winning Saturday, 6-2 but losing yesterday, 7-2
* the other Midwestern teams that split were the White Sox, Royals, Twins, and Braves
* the teams that lost two were the Cubs, Reds, Indians, Brewers, and Astros
* the teams that won both games on Saturday and Sunday were the Tigers and Rangers
* the Pirates lost Saturday but were rained out yesterday

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Girls Class 1A State Track Finals were Saturday at EIU in Charleston
Catlin Salt Fork won the State Meet by beating second place St. Joseph-Ogden, 52 to 42
Effingham St. Anthony finished sixth, Pana was 12th, and the Newton Lady Eagles were 25th
Fairfield and Marshall tied for 53rd, while Teutopolis and Shelbyville tied for 58th
* there were two young ladies compete for Newton in five of the eighteen events

* McKendra Barthelme was 2nd in the 100 meter high hurdles
* McKendra Barthelme was 9th in the 300 meter low hurdles
* McKendra Barthelme was 9th in the triple jump
* McKendra Barthelme was 9th in the long jump
* Sarah Carr was 22nd in the 3200 meter run

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Girls Class 2A State Track Finals were Saturday at EIU in Charleston
Cahokia and Maple Park Kaneland tied, each with 53 points, but Cahokia won the State Title
Mt. Vernon was 8th with 29 points, Centralia was 26th, and Mt. Zion was 34th
Charleston finished tied for 43rd and Effingham tied for 45th place
* Olney had one young lady qualify for the preliminaries held last Friday
however, Mary Grace Inyart did not qualify to advance to Saturday’s State Finals

 

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Boys Tennis Sectionals were held last Friday and Saturday statewide
there were seven teams that took part in the Herrin Sectional
* Carbondale won with 24 points, followed by Herrin with 11 points and Olney in 3rd place with 10 points
* Mt. Vernon was 4th with 9 points, followed by Marion (6), Fairfield (2), and Massac County (0)
the third place Olney Tigers have two players that will advance to the State Tennis Tournament
* Austin Urfer and Connor Walker finished among the top four in doubles
the other Olney Tigers competed well and were not able to advance to State
* included Marshall King and Tanner Hendrickson in singles competition
* also Kye Stallard and Brock VanBlaricum in the doubles competition
