the Cardinals dropped another tough one at home, falling again to the Royals, 4-2
* Midwestern teams that won were the White Sox, Indians, Tigers, and Braves
* Midwestern teams that lost were the Cubs, Reds, Brewers, Twins, and Rangers
* those that were idle on Thursday were the Pirates and Astros
the Cardinals are back in action at home tonight, the first of three against Milwaukee in St. Louis

(CLAY CITY)  the Clay City Lady Wolves Volleyball team has a fundraising breakfast and raffle drawing coming up Saturday morning, July 9th, from 7:00 to 11:00, at the Clay City Community Building – gun raffle tickets will be on sale that morning – all proceeds will go to help purchase uniforms and equipment

(NEWTON)  in Senior Legion Baseball last night – Newton Post 20 picked up another win at home
Newton beat Shelby County in a full nine innings, 11-8
* Tim Weber threw five innings for the win while Mitch Jansen pitched the final four innings for a save
* at the plate for Newton – Luke Geier had two doubles and a RBI – John Grunloh had a two RBI single
* Brock Mammoser had three total hits – Matt Goedde doubled and singled
Newton’s game scheduled against Salem tonight has been cancelled
now at 9-6 on the season, the Post 20 team is back in action this Friday night at Robinson

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Football news – the Olney Tiger program is keeping busy
Coach Matt Music has had a full schedule of workouts for the past few weeks in June
* it’s involved weights and skills work at least three days each week
* while the players have all of next week off, the schedule resumes on July 11th
the Tigers have also been busy in June with team events
* 17 players attended a 7-on-7 Camp at Michigan State University two weeks ago up in East Lansing
* the Tigers also took part in an Offensive Line and Defensive Line Camp in Spartan Stadium
the Tigers have more team activities planned for the upcoming month of July
* they’ll compete in a single day 7-on-7 Camp on July 9th at Urbana High School
* a total of 76 teams will be on hand to take part in the Saturday morning and afternoon event
* the Tigers will compete in another 7-on-7 in Mt. Carmel on Friday, July 22nd
* other teams there to take part include Fairfield, Effingham, and Massac County
the Tigers will be busy in July in preparation of the 2016 fall IHSA Football season
* Coach Matt Music and the coaching staff will conduct OTF Camp in July
* it’s each morning Monday thru Wednesday, July 11th to 13th, from 8:00 to 10:00
* it’s each night Monday thru Wednesday, July 18th to 20th, from 6:00 to 8:30
* and it all leads up to the IHSA's first official day of practice on Monday, August 8th
the Tigers will have their Tiger Football Scrimmage for the public on Friday, August 19th
the Tigers open their 2016 season on the road at Lawrenceville on Friday, August 26th

the 10 Year Old District One Baseball Tournament begins next Wednesday or Thursday in Mt. Carmel
* the winning team will advance to the 10U Sub-State Tournament in Flora
the 11 Year Old District One Baseball Tournament starts next Wednesday or Thursday in Flora
* the winning team will advance to the 11U Sub-State Tournament in Olney
the 12 Year Old Softball Sub-State Tournament begins next Friday, July 8th, in Effingham
* the winning team will advance to the 12U State Tournament in Peru, Illinois
the 12 Year Old District One Baseball Tournament starts next weekend, July 9th and 10th, in Salem
* the winning team will advance to the 12U Sub-State Tournament in Beardstown
the 14 Year Old Section Baseball Tournament begins and ends on Friday, July 22nd
* Olney will host the Brown County District winner at Bill Millspaugh Field
* the winner advances to the 14 Year Old State Tournament in South Holland on July 24th
depending on sponsorship sales and other factors, some games will be aired on WVLN-WSEI

(NEWTON)  in Girls Fastpitch Softball action from this past weekend up in Charleston
the SWAT 16U team finished first at the Chill Summer Slam NSA Qualifier Tournament
* comprised of eleven area girls, the SWAT 16U team won five games and lost one
* in fact, the SWAT team lost its opening game Friday night to Monticello, 4-3 then won five straight
* on Saturday, SWAT beat the Shelbyville Lakers in game two, 15-2
* also Saturday, SWAT then defeated the Central Illinois Elite team, 8-5 in game three
* then again on Saturday, SWAT won their third game in a row by beating the Effingham Flame, 8-6
* beginging Sunday, SWAT beat the Impact Fastpitch team, 1-0
* and finishing up Sunday, SWAT won the championship by beating the Region Sports Rumble, 9-1
the eleven player roster includes five girls from Newton
* Mariah Earnest, Kristen Hardiek, Josey Hyatt, Olivia Shipman, and Taylor Smith
the roster includes four players from Altamont

(OLNEY)  the Illinois Gymnastics Club of Olney recently competed at the USTA Nationals in Tennessee
there were 148 teams taking part from eleven other states from all across the nation
finishing second in the national competition, the IGC team brought home 14 first place National Champions
* Lily Stevens won three events – tumbling, double mini, and trampoline
* Byron Ashley won two – tumbling and double mini
* Lauryn Crowe won two – tumbling and trampoline
* Kylee Weber won two – double mini and trampoline
* other winners included Leah Weber in tumbling
* Brooklyn Gaither and Mallory Sutfin, both in double mini
* Kaylie Ginder and Elizabeth Bahl, both in trampoline
the Illinois Gymnastics Club also brought home thirteen 2nd’s, six 3rd’s, and seventy-seven other top ten’s
several IGC team members have been chosen to compete on the USTA National Teams
* Denver Doan is a member of the USTA Elite National Team (highest level of athlete)
* Madison Bahl, Gracie Lemmon, and Shelbi Lukens are on the USTA All-Star Team
the Illinois Gymnastics Club has gone undefeated for 4 years in a row in season invitational competitions
plus, the IGC has been the Illinois State Champions for 4 years in a row as well

the Cardinals begin a quick two game series in Kansas City tonight against the World Champion Royals

 

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swim Team competition, the Olney Invitational was held this past Saturday
the host Tigersharks finished in second place to the winning team from Effingham, 906 to 971
Charleston finished a distant third place with 377 points, followed by Fairfield in fourth place at 298 points
Wabash Valley (Mt. Carmel) was fifth (227), the Marshall (224),  and Greene County, Indiana (220)
Evansville was eighth (153), followed by Carmi (144), McLeansboro (82), and Harrisburg (31)

(NEWTON)  in Senior Legion Baseball over the weekend – Newton Post 20 won two of three on the road
Newton took part in the Midwest Slugfest held up in Decatur
Newton won the first game over Stanford Olympia, 14-2
* Luke Geier was the winning pitcher – also had double, single, and four RBI
* Matt Goedde had two doubles and two RBI – John Grunloh tripled with two RBI
* Joe Stone tripled home a run – Nate Meinhart and Mitch Jansen each had a double
Newton was defeated in the second game, falling to Jackson County, Missouri, 6-0
* Luke Geier, Matt Goedde, Ben Britton, and Charlie Thoele had base hits for Newton
* Mitch Jansen took the loss for Newton
Post 20 then won the third game, beating Canton, Illinois, 7-3
* Tim Weber was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Nate Meinhart
* Mitch Bierman had a triple and a run-batted-in – Luke Geier and a single and RBI
* Matt Goedde had a triple, a single, and two RBI
Newton is now 8-5 on the year – they’ll play at Teutopolis tonight

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior Legion Baseball over the weekend – Olney picked up a two wins on the road Saturday
Olney defeated Altamont in game one, 5-1
* Dylan Hires was the winning pitcher – a complete game victory, allowing five hits and striking out six
* Trey Puckett and Luke Lambird had three hits each
* Landon Pride, Dylan Hires, and Seth Kocher each had one hit apiece
Olney won the second game over Altamont, 4-2
* Landon Pride was the winner in six innings, striking out three – Trey Puckett picked up the save
* Luke Lambird had two hits – Trey Puckett with a 2 run triple – Jake Greifzu had a double
* Mason Kocher, Dylan Hires, and Landon Pride each with a hit apiece
Olney is now 9-3 on the season, now 5-1 in the District
Olney will host South Central tonight at Millspaugh Field with game time pushed back to 6:30

 

(OLNEY)  the annual Britton’s Bullpen Summer Slam was this past weekend in Olney and Noble
a total of 31 teams in seven different tournaments with boys ranging in age from 8 to 15
* the Britton Bullpen 14U team won the 14U Tournament by beating Britton’s 15U team
* the Dirtbags from Olney beat Britton’s 13U team to win the 13U Tournament played at Noble
* the Clay County team won the 12U Tournament as Jasper County finished second – Olney was third
* the Olney All-Stars won the 11U Tournament by beating out a team from Peoria in the title game
* Newton / Jasper County won the 10U Tournament with Lawrenceville finishing second
* Vincennes won the 9U Tournament with Charleston finished second
* and it was Mattoon winning the 8U Tournament with Jasper County finished second

(OLNEY)  tri-state golfers are invited to the annual Petroleum Club of Olney’s Golf Outing & Picnic set for Thursday, July 21st, less than four weeks away – the 18 hole golf tournament is a four person scramble event with a shotgun start and tee times at either 8:00 or 1:00 – it’s $70 per person – various prizes and plenty of food thru the day and night – $50 tickets are on sale with a $20,000 grand prize, five $1,000 prizes, plus more – get tickets at the door – call the P-Club for more information, at  618-392-2541

 

(CLAY CITY)  the Clay City Lady Wolves Volleyball team has a fundraising breakfast and raffle drawing coming up Saturday morning, July 9th, from 7:00 to 11:00, at the Clay City Community Building – gun raffle tickets will be on sale that morning – all proceeds will go to help purchase uniforms and equipment

 

(NEWTON)  the Lincoln Trail College Men’s Basketball program will host two camps for area youth next month  :  a Team Camp will be held Friday & Saturday, July 8th & 9th, with a two minute tournament on the first day, focusing on late game situations, followed by a double elimination tournament on day two – the cost is $225 per team or $400 for two teams – the fee for those that can play only one day is $125 per team  :  the Individual Summer Camp is for area youth ages 7 to 14 and will run Monday thru Wednesday, July 11th thru 13th, and will feature individual and group sessions on basketball skills, all divided by age and skill level – this cost is at $75 per camper and $50 for additional siblings – all participants receive a camp T-shirt  :  for details or to sign up, call Coach Luke Stuckey at  618-544-5299, extension 1203
