(NEWTON)  in Men’s Big Ten College Basketball last night
there were two games played
*  Michigan State beat Indiana, 70-50             
*  Iowa beat Nebraska, 70-59
there are two more games on the schedule for tonight
*  Michigan at Penn State                                
*  Ohio State at Minnesota
the Fighting Illini are back in Big Ten action tomorrow night in Champaign

 

(OLNEY)  in Women’s Junior College Basketball last night
the Olney Central College Lady Knights won a non-conference game at home in “The Dungeon”
*  the Lady Knights beat the visiting Millikin University Junior Varsity squad, 74-51
*  Shelbi Samsil led OCC with 20 points, while Brianna Farris chipped in with 13 points
now at 4&9 overall, the Lady Knights return to GRAC action this Saturday when they host Lake Land

 

(OLNEY)  in Men’s Junior College Basketball last night
*  Kaskaskia beat Greenville JV, 105-57
*  Three Rivers Community College beat Lincoln Trail, 65-53
there are no games scheduled for tonight involving Region 24 and/or GRAC teams

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Basketball last night – Newton dropped two on the road
the varsity Lady Eagles lost to Effingham, 43-30
*  Emily Kerner had 15 points for Newton as the Lady Eagles drop to 12&6 on the year
Effingham also won the junior varsity game, 25-19
the Lady Eagles are back in LIC action Thursday night at Lawrenceville

*  Webber Township beat Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 51-43
there were several games that were played last Saturday night
*  Edwards County beat North Clay, 54-35
*  Marshall beat Cumberland, 59-45
*  Effingham beat Pana, 73-39
*  Teutopolis beat Highland in overtime, 65-56
*  Fairfield beat NCOE, 62-51
*  Bethany Okaw Valley beat Stewardson-Strasburg, 67-53
*  Nashville beat Carterville, 59-54
*  Trenton Wesclin beat Troy Triad, 57-51

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys Junior High Basketball last night – the JMTC Tournament began down at Cisne
the tournament’s first two games were played at the North Wayne Middle School Gym
*  North Clay beat Cisne, 41-27
*  Clay City beat South Central, 48-25
the tournament continues with a single game tonight at Cisne
*  the St. Joe Wildcats will play North Clay
the final two games will be played Thursday night, back at Cisne

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls Junior High Basketball last night – Olney swept two games
the Lady Cubs beat North Knox, Indiana in the 8th grade game, 54-52 as the varsity improves to 16&4
*  Taylor LeCrone led Olney with 24 points, while Logan Kauble and Colleen Inyart combined for 17
Olney also won the 7th grade game, 34-26
the Lady Cubs return to action Thursday night traveling down to Mt. Vernon

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Wrestling this past Saturday at the Argenta-Oreana Bomber Classic
the Wrestling Tigers finished 5th out of 15 teams at the Central Illinois wrestling tournament
winning the event was Gibson City / Melvin / Sibley / Fisher with Erie-Prophetstown in 2nd place
Illini Bluffs was 3rd, Monticello was 4th, then Olney in 5th place, followed by Quincy Notre Dame
rounding out the top ten were Argenta-Oreana, Decatur Eisenhower, Warrensburg-Latham, & Rochester
others were Charleston, Riverton, Decatur MacArthur, Chicago Grant Park, and Hoopeston Area High
Olney had its first ever Bomber Classic champion, plus one 2nd, one 3rd, three 4th’s, and two 5th’s
*  Zach Shoulders won the 220 pound class with three straight wins and no losses
*  Lance Bailey had Olney’s lone 2nd place finish with two wins and one loss in the 113 pound class
*  Naaman Umfleet was 3rd in the 285 pound class with two wins and one loss
*  Tim Sturm was 4th with two wins and two losses in the 160 pound class
*  Dalyn Brach was 4th in the 138 pound class with two wins and two losses
*  Kyle Beasley was 4th with two wins and two losses in the 195 pound class
*  Trevor Jones finished 5th in the 195 pound class with four wins and one loss
*  Joe Burkett was 5th with two wins and one loss in the 182 pound class
the Wrestling Tigers are back on the mats this afternoon down at Fairfield

the Fighting Illini lost its second Big Ten game on the road, falling to Ohio State, 77-61
while Illinois falls to 10&5 overall, now 0&2 in the league, they’ll host Maryland this Wednesday night

 

(NEWTON)  elsewhere in Men’s Big Ten College Basketball from the weekend
the other Saturday results
*  Maryland beat Minnesota, 70-58
*  Purdue beat Michigan, 64-51
*  Rutgers beat Penn State, 50-46
in one lone game yesterday
*  Wisconsin blew away Northwestern, 81-58
there are two games in the Big Ten scheduled for tonight
*  Michigan State will host Indiana
*  Iowa will host Nebraska

in action last Friday afternoon and evening
*  Southwestern Illinois beat Volunteer State in the Indian Hills Tournament, 84-58
*  at the Wallace State Classic – Wallace State / Hanceville beat Wabash Valley, 66-61
in action this past Saturday afternoon and evening
*  at the Wallace State Classic – Wabash Valley beat Snead State, 88-74
*  at the Indian Hills Tournament – Northwest (Wyoming) beat Southwestern Illinois, 92-91
*  Vincennes University beat Score Academy, 115-62
there are two games tonight involving area Region 24 teams
*  Kaskaskia will host the Greenville Junior Varsity squad
*  Lincoln Trail travels to Missouri to play at Three Rivers Community College
it’s back to a full Region 24 / GRAC schedule this coming Wednesday night

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys Junior High Wrestling from yesterday – the Olney Cubs did well on the road
a total of 35 wrestlers from the Olney Cubs Wrestling Club were at the Crawford County Open in Robinson
the Olney wrestlers returned home last night with a total of ten champions in their respective categories
*  Baxter Smith, Zander Schrader, Trace Senecal, Bryson Nuttall, Ean Pottorff
*  Kyle Dowty, Kaeden Davis, Jace Clore, Kyle Boughan, and Carson Bissey
Olney also had eleven 2nd place finishers and five 3rd place finishers as well
the Wrestling Cubs are back on the mats this Sunday when they travel to Carbondale

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Wrestling from Saturday – Olney competed on the road
the Tigers finished among the top at the Aregenta-Oreana Tournament

*  the OCC Lady Knights will host the Millikin JV next Monday night in “The Dungeon” at 5:30
*  it’s back to Boys High School Non-Conference Basketball next Tuesday night at around 7:30
   *  the Olney Tigers will play at Charleston, up in Baker Gymnasium
   *  the Newton Eagles will travel to Louisville to play the Cardinals at North Clay High School
*  the OCC Blue Knights are in Region 24 action next Wednesday afternoon traveling to Godfrey, Illinois
   *  the OCC men will play Lewis & Clark Community College in a 4:00 earlier-than-normal start time
*  it’s back to Little Illini Conference action next Thursday in Girls High School Hoops
   *  the Olney Lady Tigers are at home to host the Flora Wolfgals in Ron Herrin Gym at ERHS
   *  the Newton Lady Eagles are on the road to Lawrenceville to battle the Lady Indians
      *  by the way, the Newton JV girls are scheduled to play at Effingham next Monday

the Olney Cubs Wrestlers will be back on the mats this Sunday at the Crawford County Open in Robinson
the Olney Tiger Wrestlers are back in action tomorrow morning up at the Argenta-Oreana Tournament

 

(NEWTON)  and in a note out of Central Illinois – there’s a current effort underway to return the IHSA Boys Basketball State Tournaments back to the Champaign-Urbana area – a bid has apparently been made for the newly renovated State Farm Center to host the tournament from 2016 to 2020 – at last word, the only other bidder is the Peoria Civic Center, where the tournaments have been held since 1996 – while all bids were due into the IHSA Offices by yesterday, an IHSA decision is expected by the end of March

despite leading most of the game, the Fighting Illini lost at Michigan in overtime, 73-65
with the Big Ten opener loss, Illinois is now 10&4 on the year
the Illini are right back at it in Big Ten play this Saturday afternoon at Ohio State
