* the Cardinals beat the Red Sox, 5-2 to take two out of three from Boston
    *  elsewhere  :  the Cubs beat Colorado, 6-2  :  the White Sox lost to Seattle, 13-3
    *  the Reds beat the Indians, 4-0  :  the Royals beat Arizona, 6-2
    *  the Brewers beat the Giants, 3-1  :  the Twins lost to the Athletics, 3-0
* the Cardinals are on the road to start a new series tonight against the Orioles in Baltimore
    *  all other Midwestern teams are in action today or tonight as well

 

(NEWTON)  the 2014 National Football League preseason began last night with six games
*  the Indianapolis Colts opened up the preseason with a tough 13-10 loss to the New York Jets

*  in another Midwestern game – Kansas City outlasted Cincinnati, 41-39
*  there’s six more preseason games tonight and the final four this weekend are tomorrow night

 

(OLNEY)  the 2014 12U Little League Great Lakes Regional Tournament is wrapping up in Indianapolis
*  the Pool Play Championship Semi-Finals were yesterday and last night
*  the Illinois representative team, Jackie Robinson West, beat Ohio, 13-2 in four innings via the 10-run rule
*  the other Championship Semi-Final had Indiana over Wisconsin, 14-4
*  the winners will then play in the Championship Game tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 (Illinois time)
    *  it’s a rematch from pool play action last week when Jackie Robinson West beat Indiana, 3-2
    *  tomorrow’s game will be broadcast on ESPN TV
*  that winner will then advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania

 

(OLNEY)  in summer swim team competition – some Olney Tigersharks did well last Saturday
*  the Southern Illinois All-Star Swim Meet was held in Millstadt with hundreds of swimmers taking part
*  top five finishes were achieved by five Olney Tigersharks in their various categories
    *  both Tim Sturm and Owen Powell had top five finishes in four events each
    *  Payton Blakney had three top five finishes
    *  Eduardo Mayorga and Dylan Jones had a top five finish in one event each
*  congratulations to all the Tigersharks on a fantastic season dominating almost all swim team meets

 

(NEWTON)  in college football, the Fighting Illini are underway with their practice schedule
*  the 2014 preseason training camp at Memorial Stadium is running twice a day now thru Saturday
*  this Sunday will be the 2014 Illini Fan Appreciation Day in the Great West Hall at Memorial Stadium
    *  fans can enter on the west side of Memorial Stadium starting at 3:45 Sunday afternoon
    *  admission is free and free parking will be available in the northwest lot of the State Farm Center
    *  team posters and silver markers will be available for players to sign
    *  fans can also bring their own markers and no more than two items per person for players to sign
    *  Head Coach Tim Beckman and the rest of the Illinois coaching staff will also be on hand
    *  that’s from 4:00 to 5:00 this Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Champaign
*  the Illini will then attend the week-long Camp Rantoul starting next Monday, August 11th

(OLNEY)  athletic physicals will be available at the East Richland Middle School on Monday night, August 18th, from 6:00 to 8:00 – the fee is $30 per athlete with checks made out to Richland Memorial Hospital – Dr. Bushra Shaukat and nurse practioner Melissa Kuenstler will give the physicals which are good for one at least one year and required before tryouts are allowed – for more, call AD Rick Franklin at 618-395-4372

 

(OLNEY)  the East Richland Middle School athletic department will host an “informational meeting” for any ERMS student that plans to take part in cheerleading or any other sport during the upcoming school year – that’s next Thursday, August 14th, starting at 6:00, in the Middle School Gym – parents should also attend – the individual coaches will also meet with those interested students and their parents following the “informational meeting” – for more details, call ERMS Athletic Director Rick Franklin at 618-395-4372

 

(FLORA)  the Clay County Speedway will be busy again this Saturday night – the featured race will include 30 laps for UMP Open Wheel Modifieds competing for the Big Tim Lewis Memorial with the checkered flag paying out $2,100 to win – the card also includes the Pure Stocks with a $400 payday, plus the UMP B-Mods, Non-Winged Sprints, and the Hornets – the gates open at 5:00, with racing at 7:30 – there’s plenty of concessions and seating – that’s this Saturday night at the Clay County Speedway, just north of Flora

* The Olney All Stars were eliminated after back to back losses over the weekend.
*  The Olney All Stars lost Saturday to Jackie Robinson West 14-2 on Saturday
*  the Olney All Stars were eliminated by Hinsdale 4-2 in 7 innings.
*  The other game on Sunday had Jackie Robinsons West defeating Horner Park 7-4
*  Horner Park will play Hinsdale tonight at 6:00
