* the Redbirds beat Colorado on Saturday , 3-0 , but lost yesterday 8-4 to Colorado

The Cardinals return home for a 4 game series with the L.A. Dodgers

 

(OLNEY) in High School Baseball post season play continued this past weekend

Class 1A and Class 2A Sectional Championship Games results:

* Class 1A @ Lousiville : Effingham St. Anthony over North Clay 6-1

(OLNEY) Sign ups for the 2017 City of Olney summer recreation program are now being accepted Monday through Friday, from 8:00 until 4:00 at Olney City Hall. Registrations are being accepted for both sessions. The program offers severl different leves of swimming classes and parent/tot swimming. The cost per session is $30 for City of Olney youth and $55 for non resident youth. Classes held for less than 3 days are $15 and $27.50 for City of Olney youth and nonresident youth respectively. *Also can find registration forms on the city website at http://www.ci.olney.il.us/new_visitors/parks/musgrove_aquatic_center.php

(NEWTON)  the Lake Land College Foundation will host the 20th Annual Golf Classic at Meadowview Golf Course in Mattoon today, with a shotgun start at 12 noon – registration and lunch at 11:00 – the $125 per golfer or $500 per team entry fees includes lunch, 18 holes, a golf cart, refreshments, and a dinner at the end of the day – teams and individuals can sign up now for the scramble format fundraiser by calling  217-234-5363  or by going online, at  www.lakelandcollege.edu/foundation/golf

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball – the Cardinals took care of the Dodgers last night
* the Redbirds picked up a win behind a gem from Mike Leake, 6-1
The rubber game of the three game series tonight in Dodger Stadium

 

(OLNEY) in High School Baseball from last night – Olney’s season came to an end
The Tigers fell to the Salem Wildcats, 11-1 in Class 3A regional semi-finals while being outhit 10-4
* Olney was led at the plate by Mason Kocher who had one of the four hits and the lone RBI
* Luke Lambird had a double, Gage Miller and Trey Puckett each had base hits as well
Olney ends their season with a record of 17-12, hats off to the players and coaches for another winning season.

 

(OLNEY) in High School Softball from yesterday – Olney had their season come to an end
The Lady Tigers fell to Waterloo in Class 3A Regional play, 7-4, being outhit 10-3
* Aliyah Wease had a single and an RBI, Paige Ginder and Kennedy Steber each had base hits as well
* Sophia Colclasure, Taylor LeCrone and Jessika Ochs each had an RBI.
Olney ends their season, but hats off to the Lady Tiger players and coaches for a fun and successful season

 

(NEWTON) in Post Season High School Baseball and Softball
* Class 1A and 2A Baseball and Softball Sectional Championship games will be played on Saturday
* Class 3A and 4A Baseball and Softball Regional Championship games will be played on Saturday

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball – the Cardinals had an off day for travel yesterday
* the Redbirds kick off a six game road trip tonight in Los Angeles taking on the Dodgers

 

(NEWTON) in High School Baseball from yesterday – Newton was eliminated from Class 2A regional play
The Eagles fell to Breese Central in the regional championship game, 5-4
* Newton was led at the plate by Lucas Geier who tallied two base hits and two runs batted in
* John Grunloh and Mitch Jansen each had a two hit day, including a double and an RBI.
The Newton Eagles end their season with an overall record of 15-9.
Hats off to the Eagle coaches and players on a successful season.

 

(NEWTON/OLNEY) in High School Tennis from this past weekend – Sectional play wrapped up Teutopolis won the Casey tennis sectional with 29 points.
* Paris and Casey tied for 2nd with 16 points, Robinson placed 4th with 14.  Mattoon was 5th with 10
* Olney, Effingham and Newton tied for 6th with 8 points, followed by Charleston with 7.
* Effingham St. Anthony and Shelbyville each tied with 0 points for 10th.
Looking at individual results from singles action for both Olney and Newton
* Olney: Adam Brewer went 1-1, winning 6-4, 6-3 and dropping a game 6-7, 6-4, 7-6
* Olney: Austin Atwood also went 1-1, winning first match then dropping his second 2-6, 6-3, 6-4
* Newton: Zach Huscle went 1-1, winning the first match 6-0, 6-0 then dropping the second 6-1, 6-4
* Newton: Faron Bartens: went 1-1 with a 1 round bye, winning 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 and dropping a game 6-0, 6-0
In doubles play for both Olney and Newton:
* Olney: Jack Bettis and Kye Stallard went 1-1, winning their first match 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 then falling 6-1, 6-4
* Olney: Tanner Hendrickson and FIRST Walker went 1-1 with a bye, winning 6-4, 6-1 and falling 6-2, 6-3
* Newton: Dust & Ochs lost their first match 6-1, 6-1
* Newton: Carter & Kerner went 1-1, winning 6-4, 6-1 before falling 6-1, 6-0
A congratulations to one and all at the Casey Tennis Sectional this past weekend.

It was Mahomet-Seymour taking first place in the event with 97, followed by Mattoon with 90.
* Tolono Unity placed third with 76, Mt. Zion had 54 and Rantoul rounded out the top 5 with 51 points.
* Then it was Monticello (36), Effingham (33.5), Paris (28), Urbana (26), and Champaign Central (20)
* Followed then by Charleston (19), Robinson (11), Clinton (8), Sullivan (8) and Olney (0)
We will look at individual results and year end awards for Boys Track coming up in our sports report tomorrow morning.
