(OLNEY)  in Men’s Division One College Basketball Saturday – Illinois won the “Braggin’ Rights” game
the Fighting Illini beat the Missouri Tigers Saturday night, 70-64
* while Illinois improves to 9-5 on the year, Mizzou drops back to 10-3 on the year
* Illinois has now won five “Braggin’ Rights” games in a row and now leads the series, 32 to 16
the Illini are now off until they host Grand Canyon University Saturday afternoon in Champaign

 

(NEWTON/OLNEY)  this week is Christmas Holiday Tournament Week in boys & girls high school hoops
both the Dieterich Girls and Boys Holiday Tournament start tomorrow, continuing Wednesday & Thursday
* the Newton Eagles and Lady Eagles are among fourteen other teams taking part there
the Mattoon Girls Holiday Tournament begins Wednesday and continues Thursday and Friday
* the Olney Lady Tigers are among eight teams there – each playing five games in three days & nights
the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic is later in the week, Friday and Saturday, down in Pinckneyville
* the Olney Tigers are among the twelve teams competing there with each team playing four games
there are several other Holiday Tournaments coming up this week, many of which begin tomorrow
* boys tournaments in Vandalia, Terre Haute, Eldorado, Sesser, Charleston, Effingham, and Teutopolis
* girls tournaments are in Fairfield, Charleston, and Murphysboro

(ROBINSON)  the Lincoln Trail College Baseball program will host a “baseball camp” this week in Robinson – it’s for area youth ages 6 to 13 years old with the cost set at $75 per player – the camp will be held at The Depot in Robinson, LTC’s indoor training facility from 8:00 to 12:00 noon each morning this coming Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, the 27th thru 29th – a swim party will be held following each baseball session at the LTC Natatorium on the campus – players should bring their own bat, glove, helmet, gym shoes, and catching equipment, plus a change of clothes and a towel for the swim party – the players can be dropped off at The Depot and picked up at Lincoln Trail College northeast of Robinson – the camp will focus on the fundamentals of baseball, including pitching, hitting, and base running – for more details or to sign up, call LTC Assistant Baseball Coach Kevin Franchetti by calling  618-544-5299, ext. 1201

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Wrestling yesterday – Olney won two of three matches on the road
the Tigers beat Decatur Eisenhower, 60-18 and also beat Westville, 40-27
the Tigers close loss was to the 6th ranked 2A team in the state, Mahomet-Seymour, 34-42
* we’ll take a look at the individual results coming up next week’s sports
now at 8-4 on the year, the Wrestling Tigers are back on the mats on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018
the Tigers have their third of only four home matches that evening against Effingham and Charleston

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Basketball last night – Olney dropped two non-conference games at home
the Tigers lost the tough varsity game to Mater Dei Catholic from Breese, 45-54
* Brent Hatten led Olney with 14 points – Sutton Dunn added 11 points and Brayden Flanagan had 10
* the battle between the Tigers and Knights included five ties and ten lead changes
Mater Dei won the junior varsity game, 50-39 as the Olney JV drops back to 4-3 on the year
the varsity Tigers are now 4-7 on the year, but still undefeated in the LIC at 2-0
Olney’s back in action at the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic in Pinckneyville next Friday and Saturday

(DIETERICH)  the Dieterich Girls Holiday Tournament is next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
the tournament includes eight teams with three pool play games and a cross pool play final round of games
* Pool A teams are Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, Brownstown/St. Elmo, South Central, & North Clay
* Pool B includes teams from Newton, Casey-Westfield, Arcola, and Dieterich
all but the final game will be played in the Junior High School Gym, the old High School Gym
there will be six pool play games next Tuesday, December 26th, running from 10:00am to 7:00pm
* Newton plays its first game at 2:30 that afternoon against Arcola
the final six pool play games are next Wednesday, December 27th, running from 10:00am to 7:00pm
* Newton plays Casey-Westfield at 2:30 and then Dieterich at 5:30
the final four games will be played Thursday, Decemer 28th, at 1:00, 2:30, and 4:00
the championship game will be played at 6:00 that evening in the High School Gym

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Basketball last night – Olney won two huge LIC games at home
the Lady Tigers beat visiting Paris with a buzzer-beater three-pointer, 47-44
* Olney was led by Brittany Black with a double/double, 17 points and 10 rebounds
* Taylor LeCrone added 13 points, including the winning shot at the buzzer
Olney also won the junior varsity game over Paris, 35-32
the varsity Lady Tigers improve to 9-2 on the year and still unbeaten in the LIC at 4-0
Paris on the year falls back to 10-2, now at 3-1 in the Little Illini Conference
Olney returns to action a week from today with two games at the Mattoon Holiday Tournament

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys High School Basketball last night – Newton split two non-LIC games at home
the Eagles won the varsity game over Charleston, 65-55 as Newton improves to 7-3 on the year
* Newton was led by Nick Cohorst with a double/double, 19 points and 14 rebounds
* Jack Chapman added 14 points for the Eagles, while Collin Harris scored 11 points
Charleston won the junior varsity game, 58-43
the Eagles are back in action next Tuesday at the Dieterich Boys Holiday Tournament
