the Cardinals shutout the Giants 1-0
* the Midwestern teams that won were the Pirates – Twins – Tigers – Astros – Cubs
* the Midwestern teams that lost were the Reds - Indians - White Sox – Rangers – Braves – Royals - Brewers
the Cardinals are back at it tonight with game two of three against the Braves in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  the Junior League Baseball Central Region Tournament begins today
the Little League Tournament for 13-14 year olds will be held at two sites in Fort Wayne, Indiana
there are two pools that are made up of six teams each with three pool play games scheduled per team
* the Great Lakes Division Pool A includes teams from
   * the Illinois team from Olney, plus others from Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan
* the Midwest Division Pool B includes teams from
   * Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and the host team from Fort Wayne
the tournament’s Pool Play games are scheduled for today, tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday
here’s a look at today’s four games
* in Pool A at St. Joe Central Field  :  Kentucky plays Wisconsin at 11:30  :  Indiana plays Michigan at 2:30
* in Pool B at Georgetown Field  :  Nebraska plays Iowa at 12:30  :  North Dakota plays Missouri at 3:30
the All Stars from Olney and Richland County will open up tomorrow afternoon
* Olney plays its first game representing Illinois Sunday afternoon at 1:00 (Illinois time) against Ohio
* Olney then plays Monday afternoon at 1:00 (Illinois time) against Kentucky
* Olney finishes pool play next Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 (Illinois time) against Michigan
the top eight teams, four from each pool, advance into the single elimination portion of the tournament
* there will be quarter-final games on Wednesday and semi-final games on Thursday
* the Championship game will then be that Thursday evening at 4:30 (Illinois time)
the Central Region Champion advances to the Junior League World Series up in Taylor, Michigan

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Middle School will host an athletic meeting next Thursday evening, August 11th, at 6:00, in the RCMS Gym – it’s for any Middle School student who wants to participate in athletics for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year – a parent or guardian should accompany the student as required forms, schedules, and important information will be presented – the students will also meet with their respective coaches after the main presentation  :  also, a reminder that the Richland County Middle School will offer sports physicals for students entering 6th thru 8th grades on Wednesday night, August 17th, from 6:00 to 8:00, in the RCMS cafeteria – all student athletes are required to have an updated sports physical in order to take part in any tryout, practice, or sports contest  :  if any questions, call the RCMS office

 

(OLNEY)  the 6th Annual White Squirrel Triathlon is today in Olney, sponsored by the Richland County Recreation Council – it will include a 200 meter swim, a 14.6 mile bike ride, and a 5K run/walk – for full information about the fees and registration details, check their website online, at  www.rcrcolney.com

(OLNEY)  the Junior League State Baseball Tournament ended last night in Alsip, Illinois
the Olney All-Stars are the 2016 Junior League 13-14 Year Old State Champions
* the Richland County youngsters beat Warren Park in the final game last night, 6-2
two Olney pitchers combined for a great pitching effort
* Braden Flanagan got the win by allowing only two earned runs on three hits while striking out eight
* Colby Garrard retired the final seven Warren Park hitters in a row while striking out the last two hitters
at the plate, Olney outhit the Warriors, 7 to 5 as both teams combined to leave 16 runners on base
* Trevor Zuber led Olney with a home run, a double, a single, and three runs batted in
* Braden Flanagan helped with a double, a single, and two runs scored
* Colby Garrard had an RBI single while Isaac Bradley had an RBI ground out
* Chase Williams double, walked twice, and scored a run
* Gavin Mays had a sacrifice fly with an RBI and a run scored
Olney now advances to the Junior League’s Central Regional to be played in Fort Wayne, Indiana
the 12-team, pool play, then single elimination, tournament will run this Saturday thru next Thursday
Olney will play three pool play games with six teams in each of the two pools

* while Olney entered the game undefeated at 2-0, Warren Park had won three in row at 3-1
Warren Park outhit the Olney 13-14 year old All-Stars, 11 to 5
that forces a second and final championship game coming up this evening at 5:30
tonight’s winner advances to the Junior League’s Central Regional to be played in Fort Wayne, Indiana
the 12-team, double elimination, tournament will run this Saturday thru next Thursday
the Central Regional winner advances to the Junior League World Series to be held in Taylor, Michigan

Olney won the seven team event by beating second place Fairfield, 665 to 407
Mt. Vernon, Indiana was third with 221.5 points while Carmi was fourth with 201.5 points
Harrisburg was fifth at 191, Mt. Carmel was sixth at 114, and McLeansboro was seventh at 41
the Tigersharks had five high point award winners in their respective categories
* Lauren Eagleson, Noah Church, Jaydn Holubek, Reid Brown, and Judah Dicks
Olney had six 2nd place finishers in their respective categories
* Owen Powell, Gavin Kirby, Kaylei Eubank, Asher Lambird, Ari Leslie, and Jude Nosek

* Warren Park eliminated Streator, 6-4
that sets up a championship matchup tonight at 5:30 with Olney set to play Warren Park
the Olney 13/14 year olds had two successful games earlier in the tournament
in game one played Saturday afternoon, Olney beat Belmont, 12-2 in five innings
* although Belmont committed 8 errors, Olney outhit their opponents, 5 to 4
* Olney’s pitchers forced Belmont to strand 9 runners on base, seven in scoring position
in game two played Sunday afternoon, Olney beat Streator, 16-6 in seven innings
* Olney outhit their opponents, 16 to 6 while the Richland County all-stars stranded 8 baserunners
* Olney’s pitchers forced Streator to leave 10 runners on base, four in scoring position
here’s some of the top players from the tournament's first two games
* Zach Duenas had five singles, four runs scored, and three RBI
* Trevor Zuber had two singles, a double, a home run, three runs scored, and five RBI

(OLNEY)  the Olney FFA Alumni 15th Annual Golf Outing & Raffle is set for this Friday, August 5th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it’s lunch at 12 noon and a shotgun start at 1:00 – the cost is $50 per person or $200 for a team of four with all proceeds to sponsor FFA activities and scholarships at RCHS – team prizes include four St. Louis Cardinal tickets for the top three teams – plus raffle tickets are on sale for your Grand Prize choice of $5,000 cash or $5,000 towards a purchase of a 4-wheeler at Travco Motorsports in Olney or at an Alliance John Deere dealer – second place gets $250 and third place $100 – the drawing will be August 5th at the Golf Outing – need not be present to win – must be 16 years old – tickets are $10 each on sale from any FFA or FFA Alumni member – for details, call Jamie at  618-843-5488

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County High School will host its fall sports meeting this Thursday night, August 4th, at 6:00, in the RCHS Sliva Auditorium – all students who plan to participate in athletics for the 2016-2017 school year are expected to attend – parents should be in attendance as well – the RCHS athletic handbook will be reviewed, along with information from the school’s athletic trainer in conjunction with the Youth Sports Concussion Safety Act, which takes effect this school year – after the general meeting, the individual sports will breakout into separate meetings – if any questions, contact the RCHS Athletic Office

 

NEWTON)  a note to Newton Eagle football fans – last year’s reserved football seat ticket holders now have a chance to retain their reserved seats by calling the Newton Community High School office at  618-783-2303  during regular office hours – the reserved seat tickets will be available for pickup on Monday and Tuesday mornings, August 8th and 9th, from 8:00 to 12 noon each morning – the general public may purchase reserved football seats from 8:00 to 12:00 noon on Monday and Tuesday mornings, August 22nd & 23rd – also available are sports passes for all regular season sports at NCHS – contact the NCHS office
