(OLNEY)  in Men’s Junior College Basketball last night – the OCC Blue Knights win on the road
the NJCAA Region 24/12 Tournament began with three play-in games in first round action
the 11th-seeded Blue Knights upset 6th-seeded Lincoln Trail on the road northeast of Robinson, 89-87
* the Blue Knights led for all but the first 30 seconds of the game and held on for the victory
* OCC was led by Alex Brown with 22 points and Steven Davis with 21 points
* the Blue Knights made 8 three-pointers and was 33 for 38 at the free throw line
Lincoln Trail finishes the year with a 14&7 overall record – the Statesmen were 8&8 in the GRAC
the Blue Knights advance to quarter-final action to play Kaskaskia tomorrow night at Rend Lake College

 

(OLNEY)  also in Men’s Junior College Basketball last night – there were two other close play-in games
* in overtime – 7th-seeded Lake Land beat 10th-seeded Southeastern Illinois, 89-85
* also in overtime – 8th-seeded Lewis & Clark beat 9th-seeded Shawnee, 78-73
the Region Tournament continues with quarter-final action tomorrow down at Rend Lake College
games will be at 12 noon and 2:00 in the afternoon, then in the evening at 6:00 and 8:00

the Region Tournament quarter-final games are not set for the rest of today at Rend Lake College
* top-seeded Wabash Valley plays 8th-seeded Rend Lake at 1:00
* 4th-seeded John A. Logan plays 5th-seeded Olney Central College at 3:00
* 2nd-seeded Vincennes University plays 7th-seeded Lincoln Trail at 5:00

   *  the Tigers improve to 12&14 on the year – they now play top-seeded Centralia tonight
* Class 3A @ Chatham  :  Mattoon beat Charleston, 59-46
* Class 3A @ Mt. Zion  :  Mt. Zion beat Paris, 61-42
* Class 3A @ Jerseyville  :  Jerseyville beat Troy Triad, 54-52
* Class 3A @ Mascoutah  :  Mascoutah beat Waterloo, 42-37

the Lady Cubs won the 8th grade match over Mt. Carmel in two games, 25-15, 25-15
* Olney’s varsity squad was led by Madison Michels and Kathryn Diesser
the Lady Cubs won the 7th grade match in two games, 25-19, 25-18
Olney also won the 6th grade match in three games over Mt. Carmel
the Lady Cubs are back in action later today at home against North Clay in the ERMS Gym

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Athletic Association will be sponsoring a Coed Kickball Tournament at the Noble Ball Fields just north of the former West Richland High School on Saturday, March 21st – it’s three games guaranteed per team with a $125 per team entry fee – it’s for players age 13 and older and each team must have at least four girl members – for 12 teams taking part, first place gets $200 cash and second place receives $100 cash – to enter in advance or for more information, call Julia at 618-204-1958

 

(NEWTON)  a Softball Skills Camp will be held Saturday, March 14th, in the Newton Community High School Gym for area girls – the All Skills Camp for girls in 2nd thru 6th grades will run that morning from 8:30 to 11:30 – then the Pitching & Catching Camp for girls in 3rd thru 6th grades will run that afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 – the cost is $20 for the Skills Camp, $15 for the Pitching & Catching Camp, or $30 for those that signup for both – however, the afternoon camp is limited to the first 15 pitchers that sign up – all girls must bring tennis shoes and their gloves (bats optional) – with check in at 8:00 that morning, advance sign up is recommended for both camps – call Coach Sara Beam if any questions, at 618-553-7556

   * Illinois is back in Big Ten action Wednesday night when they host Nebraska
* Maryland beat Michigan, 66-56
* Iowa beat Penn State in overtime, 81-77
there were two games played yesterday
* Wisconsin beat Michigan State, 68-61
* Ohio State beat Purdue, 65-61
there are no games on this Monday – the next action is tomorrow night with three games scheduled

the Olney Central College Blue Knights held on to beat Southeastern Illinois, 73-68

*  Dimitri Reaves led OCC with 12 points – Steven Davis and Connor Wittmer combined for 18 points
*  the Blue Knights drop back to 7&22 on the year, now 2&13 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
there were three other GRAC games last night
*  Lincoln Trail upended John A. Logan, 95-91
*  Kaskaskia beat Southeastern Illinois, 95-91
*  Lake Land beat Rend Lake, 78-72
there were two Region games last night
*  in the battle of Trailblazers, Vincennes University beat Lewis & Clark, 102-87
*  Wabash Valley beat Shawnee, 103-80
the final round of GRAC and Region games will be this coming Saturday
the Region 24/12 Tournament for both men & women will start next Monday

*  top scorer for the Lady Knights was Kelsey Pilant with 12 points
*  the OCC women fall to 10&18 on the year, now 5&10 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
the OCC teams finish their regular season schedule Saturday night by hosting Southeastern Illinois
the Lady Knights kick things off during “Sophomore Night” at 5:30, followed by the Blue Knights at 7:30

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Volleyball from Tuesday – Jasper County split two matches on the road
the Junior Lady Eagles won the 8th grade match, beating Hutsonville in two games, 25-16, 25-15
*  top Jasper County players were Olivia Rice, Macie Weidner, Sarah Carr, and Mallory Bergbower
the varsity squad now improves to 9&4 on the year
Hutsonville won the 7th grade match in three games
the Jasper County girls are back on the court this evening as they will host Robinson in Newton

* Class 2A @ Lawrenceville  :  the host Indians and Flora play at 6:00
* Class 2A @ Lawrenceville  :  Mt. Carmel plays Robinson at 7:30
* Class 2A @ Vandalia  :  Hillsboro plays Litchfield
* Class 2A @ Piasa  :  Roxana plays Gillespie
* Class 1A @ Odin  :  Patoka plays Christ Our Rock Lutheran
all the lower class regional championship games will be played tomorrow night

 

                                            LOCAL AND AREA SPORTS REMINDERS

 

(NEWTON)  a Softball Skills Camp will be held Saturday, March 14th, in the Newton Community High School Gym for area girls – the All Skills Camp for girls in 2nd thru 6th grades will run that morning from 8:30 to 11:30 – then the Pitching & Catching Camp for girls in 3rd thru 6th grades will run that afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 – the cost is $20 for the Skills Camp, $15 for the Pitching & Catching Camp, or $30 for those that signup for both – however, the afternoon camp is limited to the first 15 pitchers that sign up – all girls must bring tennis shoes and their gloves (bats optional) – with check in at 8:00 that morning, advance sign up is recommended for both camps – call Coach Sara Beam if any questions, at 618-553-7556
