(NEWTON)  in Men’s College Basketball yesterday – Illinois had its season come to an end
*  the Fighting Illini lost to Clemson in second round NIT action, 50-49
*  Illinois ends the season with an overall record of  20 wins and 15 losses

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Baseball Saturday – OCC split a pair of conference games at home
*  the Blue Knights won the first game over Lake Land, 10-4
    *  T.J. Decker was the winning pitcher throwing 4 innings in relief – he’s now 2&0 on the year
    *  top hitters were Jay Nam with 3 hits and 2 RBI – Tyler Ward also had 3 hits and 2 RBI
*  the Blue Knights lost the second game, falling to Lake Land, 3-2 in extra innings
    *  top hitters were Jay Nam and Cody Thornton each with 2 hits
*  the Blue Knights improve to 18&3 on the year, now 6&2 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
*  the Blue Knights’ single game with Rend Lake today has been cancelled and rescheduled for April 1st

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Softball over the weekend – OCC took three out of four games
*  the Lady Knights split two games in Great Rivers Athletic Conference action on Saturday
    *  OCC lost the first game to Kaskaskia, 9-4 but came back to win the 2nd game, 9-0 in five innings
*  then yesterday, the Lady Knights won two games in a doubleheader at home in Olney
    *  OCC beat Morthland College, 8-0 in five innings and 9-3 in game two
*  the Lady Knights are now 18&6 on the year, now 3&5 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
*  the OCC Ladies are scheduled to host Southeasern Illinois with a GRAC twinbill tomorrow at 2:00

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Baseball Saturday – the Olney Tigers opened their season with a win
*  it took the Tigers less than 75 minutes to beat North Clay, 12-2 in five innings
    *  Olney’s Tyler Zuber was the winning pitcher, allowing 1 earned run on 9 hits and 1 strike out
    *  Payton Billington and Troy Houchin led Olney each with 2 hits and 2 RBI
    *  Ryan Eagleson hit a grand slam home run with 4 RBI and Evan Eagleson had a 3-run home run
*  at 1&0 on the year, the Tigers are scheduled to play St. Anthony at Effingham this afternoon

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Softball Saturday – Newton split two games at the Olney Tournament
*  the Lady Eagles won their first game of the year, beating Robinson, 7-3
    *  the winning pitcher was Karsyn McCoy, working 5 innings with 5 strikeouts and no walks
*  Newton lost in the championship game, falling to Charleston, 8-2
    *  Newton’s top hitter was Brittany Fore with 2 singles, 2 doubles, and 3 runs scored
    *  Emily Kerner had two hits, while Megan Probst, Maddie Stanley, and Jordan Mammoser each 1 hit
*  at 1&1 on the year, the Lady Eagles are scheduled to host Mattoon tomorrow in Newton

*  the Lady Tigers lost their first game to Charleston, 7-4
*  the Olney Ladies then lost in the third place game, falling to Robinson, 14-6
    *  Olney’s top hitter was Taylor Barrick with 4 hits, 4 RBI, and 3 runs scored
    *  KJ Royse had 2 hits and 3 RBI, plus Sarah Hill had 1 hit and 1 RBI
*  now at 1&2, the Lady Tigers are scheduled to host Effingham St. Anthony tomorrow at ERHS

 

(NOBLE)  in High School Softball Saturday – the annual Spring Freeze Tournament was in Noble
*  the Noble/Clay City Lady Wildcats finished 2nd in the tournament with two wins and one loss
    *  the Lady Wildcats beat Hutsonville-Palestine, 5-4 outhitting the Lady Tigers, 8 to 5
    *  Noble/Clay City then defeated Red Hill, 8-4 outhitting the Lady Salukis, 6 to 5
    *  the Lady Wildcats lost the championship game to Edwards County, 6-1
        *  NCC’s top hitter was Darcie Hawkins with 4 hits, 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored
        *  Hannah Dulaney had 3 hits and 2 RBI – Sarah Weiler had 3 doubles and 2 runs scored
        *  NCC’s winning pitchers were Darcie Hawkins and Hannah Dulaney
*  Red Hill beat Altamont in the 3rd place game
*  Hutsonville-Palestine beat Vandalia in the 5th place game
*  at 3&2, the Lady Wildcats are scheduled to play at Christ Our Rock Centralia tomorrow

    *  Cisne defeated NCOE, 11-0 in six innings

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Boy’s Class 3A and 4A State Basketball Tournaments ended Saturday night
Class 3A Championship Game  :  Chicago Morgan Park beat Lincoln, 59-49
Class 3A Third Place Game  :  Chicago Orr beat Rockford Lutheran, 55-45
Class 4A Championship Game  :  Chicago Whitney Young beat Lisle Benet Academy, 46-44
Class 4A Third Place Game  :  Lincolnshire Stevenson beat Edwardsville, 70-63

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior High Volleyball – the Class L Regional is tonight in Olney
*  four area teams are involved in this evening’s event at the East Richland Middle School Gym
    *  Salem plays Mt. Carmel in the first semi-final match at 4:30
    *  then the Olney Lady Cubs play Flora in the second semi-final match at around 5:30
    *  the two winning teams will play for the Regional Championship match at around 7:00
*  the winner will advance to the Class L State Tournament at Pinckneyville High School Saturday

(NEWTON)  Newton Community High School will host the 2nd Annual DodgeBall Tournament on this coming Saturday evening, March 29th, starting at 5:30 – admission is at only $2 per person with plenty of concessions available – all proceeds go towards the Newton Elementary Mentoring and Leadership / PBIS Programs – with plenty of area teams signed up, spectators are welcome to the fun fundraising event

 

(CLAY CITY)  the Clay City Schools will have their winter sports awards program in the Junior High School Commons Area tonight, starting at 6:00 – it’s for those that participated in Junior High and High School basketball, cheerleading, and scholar bowl – all are invited – refreshments served afterwards

*  the Lady Tigers beat the Wolfgals, 18-6 in five innings
    *  Larissa Michels was the winning pitcher, allowing only 4 hits, 4 earned runs, and striking out 7
    *  Bayli Spillman led Olney at the plate with 3 hits, including a grand slam home run and 6 RBI
    *  Jynsen Yonake had 3 hits and 2 RBI – KJ Royse and Olivia Strong each had 2 hits apiece
*  at 1&0, the Lady Tigers will today host their Varsity Invitational Tournament at ERHS
    *  Olney plays Charleston at 10:00 this morning in the first game – then Newton plays Robinson at noon
    *  the tournament’s third place game is at 2:00 and the championship game at around 4:00 this afternoon

*  Noble will play in a 1:00 game next Saturday afternoon, a week from today, at the Herrin High School
*  then the second round and semi-finals are played, followed by the finals later that Saturday night

Class 3A Semi-Final  :  Lincoln beat Rockford Lutheran, 45-42
Class 3A Semi-Final  :  Chicago Morgan Park beat Chicago Orr, 52-46
Class 4A Semi-Final  :  Chicago Whitney Young beat Lincolnshire Stevenson, 75-68
Class 4A Semi-Final  :  Lisle Benet Academy slipped by Edwardsville, 38-33
the finals are this afternoon and later tonight in each class up in Carver Arena in Peoria

*  games will be played at both ball diamonds at the High School and Village Park in Noble
*  game times are at 9:00, 10:30, 12 noon, and 2:00 at both sites, with the championship game at 3:30
*  Noble/Clay City, Hutsonville-Palestine, and Red Hill will play the first three games the High School
*  Altamont, Vandalia, and Edwards County will play their first three games at the Village Park

    *  OCC’s Allie Taylor was the winning pitcher, throwing 1 inning in relief – she’s now 3&2 on the year
    *  Macie Cain led the Lady Knights with 3 hits and 3 runs scored
    *  Sam Ledbetter had 3 hits and 4 RBI, hitting her third home run of the year
*  the Lady Knights then came from behind to beat Lincoln Trail in game two, 12-4
    *  OCC’s Bailey Walker was the winning pitcher, throwing in relief – she’s now 5&2 on the year
    *  Macie Cain had 3 more hits and 3 RBI with her first home run of the year
    *  Kendra Jansen had 3 hits and 4 RBI

(OLNEY)  in the NJCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship out in Hutchinson, Kansas
*  District 16 Champion Vincennes University won their first game yesterday over Wallace State, 84-77
*  the 2nd-seeded Trailblazers are in quarter-final action tonight at 6:00 against 10th-seeded Columbia State
*  the tournament will continue thru this Saturday night

 

(OLNEY)  in the NJCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship out in Salina, Kansas
*  District 16 Champion Southwestern Illinois was eliminated by Tyler College, 74-52
*  the tournament continues the rest of this week thru Saturday night

*  three Olney youngsters competed in the IKWF State Championship in Rockford last week
    *  three time State Qualifier Kyle Beasley placed 7th at state, finishing at 30&5 on the year
        *  in four years, Beasley is a three time Regional Champion and and a Sectional Champion
        *  Beasley also this year place 3rd in the 2014 Liberty Nationals
    *  Curtis Frazier wrestled into the quarter-finals, finishing in 4th place at state
    *  first year wrestler Cameron Flanagan was eliminated in the first round, finishing at 12&10
*  the Olney Cubs have two 8-10 year old wrestlers competing in the Midget Championships this weekend
    *  Gage Nuttall has a yearly record at 19&14, while Kyle Boughan has a yearly record at 16&6
    *  it’s the first time the Olney Cubs have competed in the Midget Tournament up in Danville

 

(NEWTON)  the Boy’s Class 3A and 4A Three-Point Showdown preliminaries are later today in Peoria
Class 3A  :  among the 32 players shooting today up in Carver Arena are five from downstate Illinois
    *  they include  :  Nick Conklin and Chance McCay, both of Salem  :  Reece Bell of Charleston
    *  also Bryce Hunter of Mt. Vernon  :  and Justin Shadowens of Marion
Class 4A  :  there are four shooters among the total 32 competing in Carver Arena later this evening
    *  they include  :  Kendall Edmond of Edwardsville  :  Naason Cook of O’Fallon
    *  also Nic Gonet and Bret Langley, both of Collinsville
*  the top four in each class advance to tomorrow’s final round of shooting

 

(OLNEY)  the downstate SIJHSAA Volleyball Regionals get started this week at 16 different sites
*  the Class S Region 16 Regional at Noble will begin with semi-final action today
    *  4th-seeded Clay City plays 5th-seeded St. Mary’s Mt. Carmel at 5:00 this afternoon
    *  then it’s 2nd-seeded Cisne against 3rd-seeded Allendale at around 6:00 this evening
    *  top-seeded Noble will then play the first match winner tonight at 7:00
    *  the Regional’s Championship match will be tomorrow evening at 6:00
*  the Class L Region 8 Regional in Olney includes Olney, Flora, Mt. Carmel, and Salem
    *  it will be played next Monday with the semi-finals and championship on the same evening
*  all of the downstate regional champions go straight to their respective state tournament

(OLNEY)  in Men’s Junior College Baseball yesterday – OCC won two on the road
*  the Blue Knights won the first game over Rend Lake College, 5-2
    *  OCC’s Nick Scheller won his third game of the year allowing 2 runs in 8 innings of work
    *  Blaine Alvey led OCC at the plate with 2 hits and 1 RBI
    *  Alex Martin, Cody Thornton, and Ryan Battin each had 1 hit and 1 RBI
*  the Blue Knights won the second game over the host Warriors, 2-0
    *  OCC’s Mitchell Rose won his first game of the year throwing a 1 hitter in 7 innings
    *  Ryan Battin led OCC at the plate with 1 hit and 1 RBI
    *  Troy Paris, Bryce Paxson, Cody Thornton, and Joe Hunt each had 1 hit apiece
*  now at 16&2 overall, 4&1 in the GRAC, the Blue Knights play at Lake Land tomorrow at 3:00

    *  OCC’s winning pitcher was former Cumberland Lady Pirate pitcher Shana Marti
    *  Amber Miller led OCC at the plate with 3 hits – Chelsea Presley and Sam Ledbetter had 2 hits each
*  the Lady Knights won the second game over Shawnee, 10-9
    *  OCC’s winning pitcher was former Carmi Lady Bulldog pitcher Olivia Harrelson
    *  Rachael Kane and Paige Barclay led OCC at the plate each with 3 hits and each with a double
*  now at 13&3 overall, still 0&2 in the GRAC, the Lady Knights are at Lake Land at 1:30 this afternoon

(OLNEY)  the downstate SIJHSAA Volleyball Regionals get started this week at 16 different sites
*  the Class S Region 16 Regional at Noble will begin with semi-final action tomorrow
    *  includes teams from Noble, Clay City, St. Mary’s Mt. Carmel, Allendale, and Cisne
*  the Class L Region 8 Regional includes Olney, Flora, Mt. Carmel, and Salem
    *  it will be played next Monday with the semi-finals and championship on the same evening
*  all of the downstate regional champions go straight to their respective state tournament

 

(NOBLE)  in Girl’s High School Softball – some area teams begin their season today
*  the Noble / Clay City Lady Wildcats are at home this afternoon in Noble hosting Flora at 4:15
    *  the Lady Cats will host their 4th Annual “Spring Freeze” Tournament this Saturday in Noble
    *  teams from Edwards County, Altamont, Vandalia, Hutsonville-Palestine, and Red Hill will take part
    *  games will be played at 9:00, 10:30, and 12 noon using both fields at the High School and City Park
*  also Saturday, the Olney Lady Tigers will host their Annual Varsity Softball Tournament at ERHS
    *  the other teams involved are Newton, Charleston, and Robinson
    *  the games will be played at 10:00, 12 noon, 2:00, and 4:00

*  Illinois is a #2 seed in the National Invitational Tournament which started last night
*  due to renovation work at the State Farm Center, the Illini play at #7 Boston University tonight

(NEWTON)  Newton Community High School will host the 2nd Annual DodgeBall Tournament on Saturday, March 29th, starting that evening at 5:30 – it’s for freshmen thru adult age participants, with ten people per team and at least three opposite sex members – the cost is at $10 per team member, plus consent forms must be signed – there will be team prizes, concessions available, and admission is only $2 per person – all proceeds go towards the Newton Elementary Mentoring and Leadership / PBIS Programs – forms and entry fees must be returned to the Elementary or High Schools in Newton by this Friday, March 21st – teams from Jasper and all surrounding counties are welcome to take part in the fundraising activity

 

(CLAY CITY)  the Clay City Schools will have their winter sports awards program in the Junior High School Commons Area, starting at 6:00 – it’s for those that participated in Junior High and High School sports, including basketball, cheerleading, and scholar bowl – all are invited – refreshments afterwards
