Charleston won the 23 team event by beating out 2nd place Robinson, 84 to 103

* Cumberland was 5th at 140, followed by Benton (154), Marshall (223), and Teutopolis (227)

* Neoga was 7th at 197, then Paris (223), Cumberland (228), Cowden-Herrick / Beecher City (247)
* Olney finished 11th with 253 points, then St. Anthony (275), Dieterich (345), Newton was 14th at 347

the Lady Eagles beat Mt. Carmel, 8-1 improving to 9 and 2 on the year

the Eagles beat Teutopolis, 5-0 as Newton improves to 13 wins, no losses, and 2 ties on the year

* the other single goals were scored by Greg Shinn, Giuseppe Cucinella, and Ben Carr
* the assists were made by Sean Brody, Ben Carr, and Nacho Moragues

Olney won the junior varsity match in two sets and won the fresh/soph match in two sets

the Lady Eagles won the varsity match over Robinson in two sets, 25-18, 25-13

* Olney’s Brooks Julian was 3rd while Cubs’ teammate Holden Hough was 5th
* St. Joe’s top runner was Jarrett Doll in 15th place

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Men’s Basketball League is looking for teams and players for the upcoming 2017-2018 season with the first games scheduled for November 2nd in Claremont – the team deadline to sign up is Friday, October 27th, although the entry fees have yet to be set – it’s all part of the non-profit Richland County Athletic Association – for more details, call Ed at  618-320-9590

 

(OLNEY)  the Walmart DC 6059 will host a fundraising Bass Tournament on East Fork Lake next Friday, October 6th, with all the proceeds to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network – the cost is $25 per person with an optional $10 Big Bass contest – those taking part should be at the boat ramp no later than 6:30 that Friday morning with the boat take-off order to be determined – it’s a 6 legal size fish limit / total weight with prizes for the first place boat as well as Big Bass – the weigh in at the boat ramp is at 1:00 and tourney rules will be handed out prior to take-off – all area fishermen are urged to take part and help out the CMN

 

(NEWTON)  the Lincoln Trail College Statesmen baseball team is returning to Busch Stadium this weekend for an exhibition game – the Statesmen will play Lewis & Clark Community College this Sunday, October 1st – this will be the third consecutive year the two teams will match up against each other after a Cardinals game at Busch Stadium – tickets are still on sale, which includes a ticket to the Cardinals’ final regular season game against the Brewers, plus the Cardinals will give out free ticket vouchers for a 2018 game next year, and then the Statesmen and Trailblazers game to follow as well – tickets for the LTC fundraiser are now on sale – call Coach Kevin Bowers at  618-546-2269  or by email at  This email address is being protected from spambots. (NEWTON)  the Newton Elmentary PTO will have its Annual Eagle Challenge Color Fun 5K Run / Walk and One Mile Kids Run tomorrow – it’s registration at 7:00 in the morning on the southwest corner of the square in downtown Newton – the race will start at 8:00 with the Kids Run to follow at 8:10 – the cost is $20 per adult and $10 per child and it includes t-shirt for all taking part – the registration forms are available at the Newton Elementary School or at the Newton Press-Mentor office – while the signup deadline has past, late forms will be accepted on race day – all are invited to come out, get splashed with orange & blue for Homecoming Week, and help raise funds for the local PTO

* congratulations to Richland County native Galen Slover of Olney
* Galen was named a 2017 Sectional Coach of the Year for our downstate division and sectional
* Galen coaches the Oblong High School Lady Panthers Softball team
* Galen will be recognized at the ICA’s yearly banquet on Sunday, February 18th, 2018 in Bloomington
* all Softball ICA Coaches of the Year are selected by fellow coaches and umpires
* Galen has coached the Lady Panthers for 16 years with over 200 victories

(NEWTON)  the Illinois High School Association is proud to announce its 5th class of IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award recipients – an award created to recognize media members who have covered high school sports and activities in Illinois for a significant period of time, while maintaining perspective on the amateur events they report on – the IHSA’s media advisory committee and a veteran committee of retired media members voted on each nominee – those who received the required percentage of votes were named honorees with a limit of one winner per IHSA Board Division – here’s the 2017 awardees  :
* Greg Sapp – the News & Sports Director at 97.9 XFM and KJ Country 102.3 FM in Effingham
* Dick Goss – the Sports Editor at The Herald Review Newspaper in Decatur
* Bill Stone – a Northern Illinois sports reporter dedicated to coverage of Illinois High School Gymnastics
award recipients must be nominated by IHSA member schools around the state
* Greg Sapp was nominated by the Effingham High School
* Dick Goss was nominated by the Providence Catholic High School
* Bill Stone was nominated by both Hinsdale Central High School and Palatine High School
each honoree will be honored at a high school event of their choosing during the 2017-2018 school year

(OLNEY)  in High School Volleyball last night – Olney had a three match sweep on the road in the LIC
the Lady Tigers beat Marshall in the varsity match in two sets, 25-23, 25-19
* Olney was led by Emi Rose, Reagan Hires, Faith Stallard, Madison Mowrer, and Addie Hemrich
Olney won the junior varsity in two sets and the fresh/soph match in two sets
the Lady Tigers are back in LIC action tomorrow night when they travel to Conley Gym at Flora

the Tigers won the Annual Shrine Game at Flora, 27-16 as Olney improves to 2-2 in the LIC, 2-3 overall
offensively, Olney had 424 total yards compared to Flora’s 311 total yards
the Tigers threw for 286 yards on 16 for 31 passing
* Dakotah Brown completed all 16 passes for the 286 yards and one touchdown
* Braxton Burgener led the Olney receivers with 7 catches for 118 yards and the lone aerial touchdown
* Sutton Dunn caught 6 passes for 108 yards
* Kaleb Foster snagged 2 catches for 56 yards

(OLNEY)  the Walmart DC 6059 will host a fundraising Bass Tournament on East Fork Lake next Friday, October 6th, with all the proceeds to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network – the cost is $25 per person with an optional $10 Big Bass contest – those taking part should be at the boat ramp no later than 6:30 that Friday morning with the boat take-off order to be determined – it’s a 6 legal size fish limit / total weight with prizes for the first place boat as well as Big Bass – the weigh in at the boat ramp is at 1:00 and tourney rules will be handed out prior to take-off – all area fishermen are urged to take part and help out the CMN

 

(NEWTON)  the Newton Elmentary PTO will have its Annual Eagle Challenge Color Fun 5K Run / Walk and One Mile Kids Run this coming Saturday, September 30th – it’s registration at 7:00 that morning on the southwest corner of the square in downtown Newton – the race will start at 8:00 with the Kids Run to follow at 8:10 – the cost is $20 per adult and $10 per child and it includes t-shirt for all taking part – the registration forms are available at the Newton Elementary School or at the Newton Press-Mentor office – while the signup deadline has past, late forms will be accepted on race day – all are invited to come out, get splashed with orange & blue for Homecoming Week, and help raise funds for the local PTO

it was Robinson winning the LIC Championship as they beat out 2nd place Flora, 338 to 350
* Lawrenceville / Red Hill finished 3rd with 354 points, followed by Casey-Westfield at 364
* Olney was 5th with 366 points, then Paris at 372 and Marshall at 387
eleven young men were named to the 1st Team All-Conference with the top scores individually
