(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Basketball – the Little Illini Conference Tournament started last night
there were two first round games played in Ron Herrin Gym at Richland County High School in Olney
* 8th-seeded Red Hill beat 9th-seeded Robinson, 59-50
* 7th-seeded Casey-Westfield beat 10th-seeded Edwards County, 50-45
after tonight off, there will be four quarter-final games tomorrow in Ron Herrin Gym at RCHS
* top-seeded Flora plays #8 Red Hill in the first game at 3:00
* then it’s 4th-seeded Lawrenceville against 5th-seeded Olney at 4:30
* 2nd-seeded Marshall plays #7 Casey-Westfield at 6:00 tomorrow evening
* and then 3rd-seeded Paris is up against 6th-seeded Newton at 7:30
the tournament continues with two games each night next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday
the trophy round will include the tournament’s final three games Thursday night next week

the Lady Wildcats won their Class S Regional Semi-Final game over St. Mary’s Mt. Carmel, 36-17
* St. Joe was led in scoring by Haven Doll and Paige Steber, each with 12 points – Bree Zuber had 8
in last night’s second Semi-Final game – New Hope beat Bluford, 45-41
the Class S Regional Championship game is tonight at 6:00 down at St. Mary’s School in Mt. Carmel

the Cubs won the 8th grade game by beating Fairfield, 43-32 as the Olney varsity improves to 13-4
* Kaleb Foster led Olney with 20 points and 14 rebounds – Braden Flanagan chipped in with 11 points
Fairfield won the 7th grade game, 26-22 as the Olney junior varsity drops to 4-11 on the year
the Cubs are back in action next Tuesday night as they host North Knox in the RCMS Gym

the Olney Cubs “A” Team beat North Clay, 44-13 as the “A” Team improves to 7-3 on the year
* the “A” Team was led in scoring by Chase Travis with 21 points
North Clay won the “B” Team game, 31-23
the Olney “A” Team 6th Graders are back in action tomorrow with two games at the Salem Invitational

all five were named to the “All-South” recipients list for their respective sport
* Blake Nohren was named to the “All-South” Volleyball list
and there were four from RCHS named to the “All-South” Cross Country teams
* Cameron Hough to the “All-South” First Team for Girls Cross Country
* Kylar Craig to the “All-South” Second Team for Girls Cross Country

the Board voted to open up state final hosting bids in three sports
* they include Class 3A/4A Baseball, Class 1A Boys Soccer, and Competitive Dance
* the current Class 3A/4A Baseball contract will end in June at Silver Cross Field in Joliet (since 2006)
* the Class 1A Boys Soccer State Finals ended last October at The Corn Crib in Normal
* the newest sport, Competitive Dance, has been held since 2013 in Bloomington’s U.S. Cellular Coliseum
the IHSA Board will consider any and all bids for these sports later this spring or early summer

(NEWTON)  in Boys Junior High Hoops from the weekend – Newton Jasper County won three out of four
both the varsity and junior varsity Junior Eagles played in their respective LEIC Tournament last Friday
* the 8th grade squad beat Oblong, 39-18 as Kyle Schafer and Jarrett Tharp combined for 25 points
* the 7th grade team beat Martinsville, 34-24
then in second round action last Saturday in their respective tournaments
* the varsity squad beat host Paris Mayo, 38-31 as Tharp and Schafer teamed up for 27 points together
* the junior varsity team lost their game to Marshall, 44-10
the 8th grade Junior Eagles return to Paris for the championship game tonight against Marshall

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys Junior High Basketball last Thursday – Olney Richland County swept two games
the Cubs won the 8th grade game over Lawrenceville, 43-39 as the varsity improves to 12-3 on the year
* Kaleb Foster had another double/double, with 14 points and 17 rebounds – Braden Flanagan scored 12
Olney also won the 7th grade game, 29-23
the Cubs were back in action last night at Vincennes Clark

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Volleyball from this past Saturday – Newton Jasper County split two at home
the Junior Lady Eagles won the 8th grade match over Paris Mayo in two sets, 25-18, 25-22
* Newton was led by Renee Probst, Kelsi Geltz, Brooke Jansen, and Josie Grunloh
Paris Mayo won the 7th grade match in two close sets
the Junior Lady Eagles are back on the court at home with Sigel St. Michael’s this Thursday night

at least five on the Little Illini Conference teams are in action tonight, including one conference game
* that has Marshall traveling to Lawrenceville to battle the Indians
the other LIC teams playing tonight are all in non-conference action
* the Olney Tigers travel to Dieterich
* the Newton Eagles are on the road to Shelbyville
* and Casey-Westfield plays up at Arcola
the Boys LIC schedule resumes with conference play this coming Friday night

the Fighting Illini handed Purdue it first road loss of the year by beating the Boilermakers, 84-70
* Illinois improves to 9-8 overall, winning their first league game, now at 1-3 in the Big Ten
* Purdue falls back to 14-3 on the year, now 2-2 in the Big Ten Conference
the Illini are off until Saturday afternoon’s conference matchup against Nebraska in Champaign
