the Cardinals held on to beat the Cubs, 10-9  :  the Brewers beat the Dodgers, 4-3
the Twins beat Oakland, 8-7  :  the Phillies beat the Braves, 5-2
* it’s a full schedule of fifteen games on Tuesday, seven of which involve Midwestern teams
the Cardinals again will host the Cubs in St. Louis  :  the Reds are at Pittsburgh
the White Sox will host Detroit  :  the Indians are at Kansas City  :  the Twins host the A's
the Braves host the Phillies  :  the Dodgers are at Milwaukee

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Baseball yesterday – Olney lost a tough LIC game on the road
the Tigers lost to Flora, 4-0 as the host Wolves outhit visiting Olney, 10 to 3
* Olney’s singles were hit by Reid Kocher, Gage Miller, and Hunter Wyatt
* the Tigers left five players on base, four of which were in scoring position
at 11&9 on the year, the Tigers are now 4&3 in the Little Illini Conference
the Wolves improve to 15&11 overall, now at 7&1 atop the LIC standings
the Tigers are at Edwards County today to resume the suspended 3-3 in the 10th inning


 
(NEWTON)  in High School Baseball yesterday – Newton lost in conference action at home
the Eagles lost to Paris, 8-3 as the visiting Tigers outhit host Newton, 14 to 8
* Newton’s Luke Geier had 2 hits, Nick Reis had a 2 RBI hit, and John Grunloh had an RBI hit
at 10&8 overall, the Eagles are now 6&2 in the Little Illini Conference
Paris improves to 19&6 on the year, now 6&2 in the LIC

the Lady Tigers lost Flora, 6-4 as the host Wolfgals outhit visiting Olney, 10 to 8
* K.J. Royse had 2 hits and 1 RBI, Paige Ginder had 2 hits, and Sophia Colclasure had 2 doubles
at 16&10 on the year, now at 6&2 in the LIC, the Lady Tigers are scheduled to host Mattoon tomorrow

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Softball yesterday – Newton won a close conference game at home
the Lady Eagles held on to beat Paris, 2-1 as the hits were even at 3 apiece for each team
* Newton’s winning pitcher was Katelyn Hardiek allowing only 1 hit and striking out 3
* Ariel Richards led the Lady Eagles at the plate with a triple and 1 run scored
at 14&6 overall, now at 4&3 in the LIC, the Lady Eagles will host Cumberland today in Newton

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Track – the Newton Invitational involved  13 area teams
Mattoon beat the 2nd place host Lady Eagles, 125 to 116.40 – Teutopolis was 3rd with 74.40 points
then Effingham was 4th at 43.40, Salem was 5th at 34.40 points, and Olney was 6th with 28.40 points
Palestine was 7th (28), followed by Flora (24), Mt. Carmel (22), Red Hill (20), and Robinson 18)
rounding out the other remaining teams are Effingham St. Anthony (12) and Lawrenceville (8)
the 2nd place Lady Eagles won six of the 18 events, with had with 10 other top five finishes
* McKendra Barthelme won the 100 meter hurdles and won the long jump
* Alli Kline, McKendra Barthelme, Brooke Koebele, and Alex Haarman won the 400 meter relay
* Carlie Webb won the high jump
* Alli Kline, Emma Weber, McKendra Barthelme, and Taylor Johnson won the 1600 meter relay

the Tennis Tigers lost to Teutopolis, 8-1
Olney won only one of the six singles matches
* Connor Walker won the #4 singles match in two sets
Teutopolis won all three of the doubles matches
at 8&2 on the year, the Tennis Tigers take their 2&0 LIC record into action tomorrow when they host Paris

the Olney St. Joe girls finished in 4th place out of the 11 teams that took part
six Lady Wildcats finished first or second in their events to qualify for this Saturday’s State Meet at Herrin
* Bree Zuber in the high jump
* Evy Atkins, Haven Doll, Marni Burgener, and Maci Burgener in the 1600 meter relay
* Evy Atkins in both the 800 meter run and 1600 meter run
* Haven Doll in the 1600 meter run
* and Chelsea Ochs in the 7th grade 100 meter dash

(NEWTON)  the Junior Legion Baseball Post #20 team based in Jasper County will have a fundraising pork burger cookout this Saturday with serving from 10:30 to 1:00 – stop by the American Legion in Newton or the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park to help out at either location – proceeds to help with team expenses

 

(OLNEY)  East Richland High School will be offering sports physicals this Thursday at a price of only $25 per athlete – from 9:00 to 12:00 noon for boys with Dr. Brian Atwood with checks made payable to Dr. Atwood – from 1:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon for girls with Melissa Kuenstler with checks made payable to Richland Memorial Hospital – all sports physicals are good for one calendar year and must be on file in the ERHS office – if any questions, contact Athletic Director Curt Nealis or Shirley Hunt in the ERHS office

the Cardinals took two from the Pirates, 2-1 in 11 innings Saturday and 3-2 in 14 innings yesterday
Cubs lost two to the Brewers  :  White Sox lost two to the Twins  :  Royals lost two to the Tigers
Reds split two with the Braves  :  Indians split two with the Mariners
* Monday’s limited schedule includes eleven games, four of which involve Midwestern teams
Cardinals host the Cubs in the first of four games this week  :  Brewers host Dodgers
Braves host Phillies  :  Twins host the A's  :  Royals, White Sox, Reds, and others are idle

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Soccer Saturday – the Centralia Tournament came to an end
the Olney Lady Tigers finished the ten team tournament in 3rd place
the Lady Tigers ended pool play with a win over Massac County, 3-2 in overtime
* Olney’s regulation goals were scored by Courtney Kman and Erica Mortenson
* Olney’s penalty kick overtime goals were scored by Courtney Kman, Maci Dunn, and Taloni Ginder
the Lady Tigers then won the 3rd place match by beating Salem, 3-0
* Olney’s goals were scored by Erica Mortenson, Courtney Kman, and Sophia Colclasure
* there was excellent defensive play by both Paige Ginder and Stephanie Shan
the Lady Tigers final regular season match in this coming Friday at home against Salem

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys High School Track from Friday – fifteen teams competed at the Newton Invitational
Shelbyville beat 2nd place Robinson, 102 to 82.50 - the host Eagles finished 3rd with 81 points
Mattoon was 4th with 74 points, Casey-Westfield was 5th (53), then Teutopolis (40) and Charleston (37)
rounding out the other teams were Vandalia (32), Cisne (30), St. Anthony (24.50), Fairfield (23)
then Effingham (22), Altamont (7), Lawrenceville (4), and Red Hill (2)
the 3rd place Newton Eagles won one of the twenty events, they had nine top four finishes
* Joe Stone, Matthew Tolliver-Goode, Zack Lewis, and Brycen Dhom won the 1600 meter relay
* Mitch Bierman, Joe Stone, Brycen Dhom, and Matthew Tolliver-Goode was 2nd in the 400 meter relay
* Joe Stone was 2nd in the 800 meter run
* Keith King was 2nd in the high jump
* Mitch Bierman was 2nd in the 100 meter dash and 3rd in the 200 meter dash

(OLNEY)  the Illinois Gymnastics Club of Olney has been named the 2015 Southern Illinois United States Tumbling and Trampoline State Champions – the team recently competed in Pana, where they were up against 42 other teams and received 45 individual State Champion Titles to earn the State Champion title – the meet was the qualifier for the U.S. Tumbling & Trampoline National Competition to be held in June out in South Dakota – every team member of the Illinois Gymnastics Club qualified to attend the National event – the local Gymnastics Club has been undefeated for the past three years in the USTA Invitational meets – congratulations to all the athletes, instructors, parents, and others involved in the local gymnastics club

the Lady Tigers lost to Freeburg, 5-2 as Olney is now 1&2 in pool play action
* Olney’s goals were scored by Courtney Kman and Taloni Ginder, plus an assist from Courtney Kman
* defensively, Robin Volk had a good match in the goal
the Lady Tigers return for their final pool play match tomorrow morning at 11:00 against Massac County
their final tournament match will then be tomorrow afternoon at either 1:00 or 3:00 at Centralia

(OLNEY)  in Girls Junior High Track – seven teams competed in Wednesday’s Class L Regional at ERHS
Mt. Vernon beat 2nd place Salem, 134 to 77 – Carmi was 3rd with 71 points – Olney was 4th with 61 points
Fairfield finished 5th with 41 points, then 6th place Mt. Carmel with 34 points and Flora with 17 points
4th place Olney had four young ladies qualify for the Class L State Track Meet with four top two finishes

(OLNEY)  the 2015 Olney Junior Pro Football sign-ups will be held next Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights, from 6:00 to 8:00, each evening, at the Pavilion in Musgrove Park – the Junior Pro Football League is open to all Richland County students entering the 3rd thru 8th grades this fall – next week’s sign-ups will provide an opportunity to meet the 2015 head coaches and to ask any questions – the $40 per player sign-up fee helps cover equipment and insurance costs for the league and the fee may increase if not paid during next week’s sign-up – for more information or details, check the Facebook page at Olney Jr Pro Football

the Tigers beat Mt. Carmel at Bill Millspaugh Field, 16-5 by the 10-run rule in five innings
Olney outhit the Golden Aces, 14 to 7 as the two teams combined to strand 14 runners on base
* Olney’s Hunter Wyatt led all hitters with 4 hits, 2 RBI, and 1 run scored
* Reid Kocher, Luke Hahn, Troy Houchin, Luke Lambird, and Gage Miller each had 2 hits apiece
* Jonah Buscher pitched 2 innings for the win while Dalton Lancaster threw the final 3 innings

the Tigers and host Wolves tied at 103 points to win the Flora Invitational this past Tuesday
Patoka was 3rd with 36 points, followed by Odin with 30, Cisne with 24, and Wayne City with 4 points
 (most of the ERHS senior tracksters did not take part due to the ERFAE Awards Night also Tuesday night)
Olney won six of the thirteen events, plus had twelve other top three finishes
* Ben Lynch won the pole vault and was 2nd in the 200 meter dash
* Noah Allen won the 200 meter dash
* Tyler Hughes won the 800 meter run
* Cole Simpson won the 3200 meter run
* Davonte Crite, Klayton Craig, Noah Allen, and Cameron Howard won the 400 meter relay

the Lady Wildcats last week won the Junior Midland Trail Conference Meet held at ERHS in Olney
* St. Joe won with 65 points, followed by 2nd place Cisne with 53 points and 3rd place North Clay at 49
the Lady Wildcats also last week won the Junior Midland Trail Conference Pee Wee Meet held at Cisne
* St. Joe won the six team event – Cisne finished 2nd and North Clay was 3rd
* the other teams were Wayne City, Geff, and the East Orchard Christian Academy from Olney
