(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball last night, involving the Midwestern teams
*  the Cardinals for the second night in a row beat San Diego, 4-2
    *  elsewhere  :  the Cubs lost to the Mets, 3-2  :  White Sox beat Toronto, 11-5
    *  the Reds lost to Colorado, 3-2  :  the Brewers beat the Dodgers, 6-3
    *  the Royals beat the Twins, 6-5  :  the Indians beat the Orioles, 2-1
*  the Cardinals are back at home tonight with game three of four against the Padres
    *  all the other Midwestern teams are back in action tonight, under the lights

 

(NEWTON)  it’s Week Two of the National Football League preseason schedule
*  there were two games last night - one involving a Midwestern team
    *  the Lions lost to the Raiders, 27-26
*  there are eight more preseason games on this Saturday, four involving Midwestern teams
    *  Green Bay at St. Louis : Giants at Indianapolis : Jets at Cincinnati : Cardinals at Minnesota
*  there are two more games tomorrow night with the Week Two finale next Monday night

 

(OLNEY)  the 2014 Little League Baseball World Series continued yesterday with four games
*  in the United States Bracket  :  Pennsylvania beat Tennessee, 4-0
    *  and it was Texas over New England, 6-4
*  in the International Bracket  :  Nuevo Leon beat British Columbia, 4-3
    *  and it was Japan over Venezuela, 1-0
*  the double elimination tournament continues with four more games today on ESPN or ESPN2
*  the Jackie Robinson West team, representing Illinois, is in championship round action tomorrow at 1:00

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball from this past Thursday – Newton/Jasper County was in action
*  the Junior Lady Eagles lost their first game of the year, falling to Casey, 4-3
*  now at 2&1 overall and  in the Junior Little Illini Conference, the Jasper County girls play today
*  the Altamont Tournament features three round robin games
    *  the NJC girls play Sullivan at 10:30 this morning, then St. Anthony at 12 noon, and Altamont at 4:30

(OLNEY)  the organizational meeting for the Progressive Bowling League at the Olney Bowling Center is next Tuesday night, August 19th, starting at 7:00, at the OBC – anyone interested in bowling this fall and thru the upcoming winter should attend – all new bowlers are welcome and encouraged to attend

 

(OLNEY)  athletic physicals will be available at the East Richland Middle School next Monday night, August 18th, from 6:00 to 8:00 – the fee is $30 per athlete with checks made out to Richland Memorial Hospital – for more details, call Athletic Director Rick Franklin at 618-395-4372 on Monday

 

(FLORA)  it’s back to oval, dirt track racing this Saturday night at the Clay County Speedway with the regular lineup of UMP Modifieds, Non Wing Sprints, Pure Stocks, and UMP B-Mods – the Hornet 20 will feature a dual state challenge with the top five Indiana racers from last night’s Chandler Speedway racing – plus a Pure Stock Mechanics Race and Hornet Mechanics Race as well – gates open at 5:00, with racing at 7:30, and always plenty of concessions – all at the Clay County Speedway tonight, just north of Flora

(NEWTON)  the 2nd week of preseason football in the National Football League started last night
*  in Chicago, the Bears held on at Soldier's Field to beat the visiting Jaguars, 20-19
*  there are four more games on tap tonight, two of which involve Midwestern teams
    *  the Detroit Lions play the Raiders on the west coast
    *  the Tennessee Titans play the Saints down in New Orleans
*  then eight games Saturday involving the Colts, Packers, Rams, Bengals, and Vikings
*  there are two games Sunday, including the Chiefs
*  the Browns are on the road in the final week 2 game next Monday night

 

(OLNEY)  the 2014 Little League Baseball World Series started with four games yesterday
*  the Illinois team, Jackie Robinson West, won their first game of the double elimination tournament
    *  the Chicago youngsters beat Washington State, 12-2
    *  the other United States Bracket game had Nevada over South Dakota, 12-2
    *  in the first International Bracket game - South Korea beat the Czech Republic, 10-3
    *  then Puerto Rico beat Australia, 16-3
*  the tournament's final four first round games are today in Williamsport, Pennsylvania

    *  Reds lost to Boston, 5-4  :  Royals beat Oakland, 3-0  :  Twins beat the Astros, 3-1 
    *  the Indians split a doubleheader with Arizona, winning 3-2, then losing 1-0
*  the Cardinals return home for a seven game series starting tonight with San Diego
    *  elsewhere this afternoon  :  the Cubs host Brewers  :  the Royals host Oakland
    *  later tonight  :  the Reds are in Colorado  :  the White Sox, Indians, and Twins are all idle

*  the double elimination tournament will have four games today thru tonight
*  then the final four first round games will be Friday afternoon and evening
*  there are four games Saturday, including the first two elimination round games
*  then games each day Sunday thru all of next week with the finals a week from Saturday
*  the Great Lakes team from Illinois, Jackie Robinson West, plays today in the 2:00 game
  *  there are seven other teams in the United States Bracket
     *  Washington, South Dakota, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Rhode Island
  *  there are eight teams in the International Bracket

(OLNEY)  the 2014-2015 seasons for Illinois High School Association sports are soon to start
*  practices officially began this week for high schoolers in Illinois
    *  while football practices began Monday, all the other fall IHSA sports began practice yesterday
*  the IHSA golf seasons for both girls and boys will begin competition next Monday
*  all the other fall IHSA sports will begin competition the following week, starting on August 25th
*  the first night for IHSA football is two weeks from tomorrow night on August 29th
*  most all junior high sports thru either the IESA or SIJHSAA are already underway in our area

 

(NEWTON)  it’s Week 2 of the National Football League preseason starting tonight
*  the only game at 7:00 tonight has the Bears hosting the Jaguars at Soldier Field in Chicago
