(OLNEY)  in Men’s Big Ten Conference Tournament Basketball action yesterday
*  Illinois won its first round game by beating Indiana, 64-54 and winning the rubber game of the season
    *  the Fighting Illini improve to 19&13 on the year and advance to play top-seeded Michigan today
    *  it’s a quarter-final matchup at 11:00 this morning, the first of four big games on tap for this Friday
*  here’s a look at the other first round winners from yesterday and last night
    *  5th-seeded Ohio State slipped by 12th-seeded Purdue, 63-61
    *  7th-seeded Minnesota beat 10th-seeded Penn State, 63-56
    *  11th-seeded Northwestern upset 6th-seeded Iowa, 67-62
today’s winners move into the semi-final games tomorrow afternoon and the title game on Sunday

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Men’s 4-on-4 Basketball League Tournament ended last night
*  top-seeded Amoeba Press came from 11 points down to beat 3rd-seeded Berryville Vineyards, 58-54
*  in their first year in the League, Amoeba Press finishes at 23&2 – Berryville Vineyards finishes at 17&10
*  a big “thank you” to all the League players, coaches, volunteers, and supporters over the past few months

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Baseball and Softball, both OCC teams had their games cancelled yesterday
*  the Blue Knights moved their home Great Rivers Athletic Conference game to later this afternoon
    *  the 3:00 nine inning game will be against Southeastern Illinois out at Dennis Conley Field at OCC
    *  the Blue Knights then travel to Southeastern Illinois for a GRAC twinbill tomorrow afternoon
*  the Lady Knights postponed their GRAC doubleheader at Lake Land until next Wednesday, March 19th
    *  the Lady Knights travel to West Frankfort to play at Morthland Christian College
    *  it’s non-conference doubleheader action against the Lady Patriots at 2:00 and 4:00 this afternoon
    *  the Lady Knights will begin their GRAC schedule at Wabash Valley down in Mt. Carmel tomorrow

Class 3A @ Robinson : Newton Jasper County lost a hard-fought match to Robinson in three close games
    *  the Junior Lady Eagles finish a fantastic season with a 15&4 record – congratulations
Class 3A @ Sullivan  :  Shelbyville Moulton beat Teutopolis in two games
Class 2A @ Effingham  :  Albion defeated St. Elmo in three games
Class 4A @ Mattoon  :  Mattoon beat Charleston in two games
Class 1A @ Strasburg  :  no results available between Effingham Sacred Heart and Martinsville
all the winners advance to the IESA 8th Grade Volleyball Sectionals next Monday night

 

(NEWTON)  the IESA 7th Grade Volleyball State Tournaments start tomorrow at four upstate sites
*  a few downstate area teams are taking part among the eight teams in each of the four classes
*  they include Stewardson-Strasburg, Effingham, Pana, and Mt. Zion

 

(OLNEY)  the Boy’s Class 1A and 2A Country 3-Point Showdown Preliminaries were last night in Peoria
*  some downstate shooters advance to today’s final round later this afternoon and tonight
Class 1A  :  Collin Klingler of Clay City was among the top four shooters advancing to the finals
    *  the others were from Hanover River Ridge, Flanagan Cornell, and Colfax Ridgeview
Class 2A  :  Nolan Luke of Pinckneyville was among the top four advancing to today’s finals
    *  others were from Greenville, Williamsville, and Hoopeston Area
the final rounds of shooting are this afternoon and later tonight up in Carver Arena

(NEWTON)  Newton Community High School will host the 2nd Annual DodgeBall Tournament on Saturday, March 29th, starting that evening at 5:30 – it’s for freshmen thru adult age participants, with ten people per team and at least three opposite sex members – the cost is at $10 per team member, plus consent forms must be signed – there will be team prizes, concessions available, and admission is only $2 per person – all proceeds go towards the Newton Elementary Mentoring and Leadership / PBIS Programs – forms and entry fees must be returned to the Elementary or High Schools in Newton by Friday, March 21st – teams from Jasper and all surrounding counties are welcome to take part in the fundraising activity

*  Olney Central College swept a non-conference doubleheader from Mid-Continent University
    *  the Blue Knights won the opening game, 16-1 – the winning pitcher was T.J. Decker with 9 strikeouts
        *  top OCC hitters were Jay Nam, Alex Martin, Bryce Paxson, and Blaine Alvey, all with 2 hits apiece
    *  the Blue Knights won the second game, 10-0 – the winning pitcher was Elijah Knepper of Newton
        *  top OCC hitters were Jay Nam, Jacob Snodgrass, Tyler Ward, and Joe Hunt, all with 2 hits each
*  now at 12&1, the Blue Knights are scheduled to host Southeastern Illinois in GRAC play this afternoon
*  in Junior College Softball – the Lady Knights are scheduled for GRAC action today up at Lake Land

Class 3A @ Highland  :  Marion beat Alton Marquette, 58-39

Class 4A @ Edwardsville  :  the host Tigers beat Belleville East, 47-40
all of the upper class sectionals end tomorrow night – the lower class state tournaments start tomorrow

 

(NOBLE)  in Junior High Volleyball last evening – Noble took two of three matches on the road
*  the Junior Lady Wildcats lost the varsity match to Clay City in three games, 25-22, 17-25, 12-15
    *  Noble’s varsity team is 17&5 on the year, finishing the Junior Midland Trail Conference at 8&2
*  Noble won the junior varsity match in two games and won the C team match also in two games
*  the Junior Lady Wildcats will host a Class S Regional next week – Noble plays next Thursday night

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior High Wrestling – the Olney Cubs recently competed in the IKWF Regional Tourney
*  the Olney Cubs Wrestling Club took 22 young wrestlers to the event with 13 qualifying for Sectionals
    *  Olney’s two Regional Champions were Kyle Beasley and Curtis Frazier
    *  2nd’s  : Hunter Summitt, Dylan Sucher, Jordan Miller, Cameron Flanagan, Kyle Dowty, Kyle Boughan
    *  3rd’s  :  Ean Pottorff, Gage Nuttall, Andrew Lynch  :  Olney’s Peyton Blanton finished 4th
*  the Cub’s Bantam Division involves 5 and 6 year olds, but does not all advancement beyond the Regional
    *  Olney’s Caden Julian had a 2nd place finish  :  3rd’s were Baxter Smith, Levi Ochs, Aidan McDowell
    *  all competing and finishing 4th at Regional were Jace Paddock and Bobby Graves
*  the Olney Cub’s Senior Team finished 2nd and brought home the Club’s first team trophy
*  the Cub’s Novice & Intermediate Teams finished in 6th place – overall, Olney was 5th out of 18 teams

        *  winning pitcher was Dylan Allen – top hitters were Joe Hunt and Jacob Snodgrass
    *  OCC then beat Frederick Community College, Maryland, 9-1
        *  winning pitcher was Nick Scheller – top hitters were Yoonjae Nam and Cody Thornton
    *  the Blue Knights defeated Coastal Carolina, South Carolina, 7-6

(NEWTON)  mark your calendars for Saturday, March 29th, in the Newton Community High School Gym, for the 2nd Annual DodgeBall Tournament, starting that evening at 5:30 – it’s for freshmen thru adult age participants, with ten people per team and at least three opposite sex members – the cost is at $10 per team member, plus consent forms must be signed – there will be team prizes, concessions available, and admission is only $2 per person – all proceeds go towards the Newton Elementary Mentoring and Leadership / PBIS Programs – forms and entry fees must be returned to the Elementary or High Schools in Newton by Friday, March 21st – teams from Jasper and all surrounding counties are welcome to take part

 

(OLNEY)  a fundraising indoors golf tournament to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network is coming up all of next week at Britton’s Bullpen and Top Spin Larry’s in Olney – it’s a 9 hole, two person, alternate shot golf tournament, priced at only $20 per person, starting next Monday, March 17th, and running all next week until Saturday, March 22nd – tee times available during hours of operation with prizes to the top teams – have some fun and most importantly, raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network – to sign up, call the Wal-Mart DC #6059 at 618-393-5900 and ask for Gary, Tim, or Scott – or call 618-839-0069

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Athletic Association has a fundraising “pancake & sausage” breakfast this Saturday morning at Pitas 'n More Restaurant, in the Eagles Lodge, along North Fair Street in Olney, with serving from 7:00 to 10:00 – the low $3.50 tickets will be on sale at the door – all proceeds go to support the various athletic community events in Richland County – this Saturday morning is also the sign up date for the new Richland County Women’s Volleyball League – for more details, call Ed at 618-837-0662

 

(NOBLE)  it’s an invitation to all current and past Noble volleyball players, plus parents, grandparents, and fans, to help celebrate the history of Noble volleyball as everyone’s invited to attend the last home junior high volleyball match in Noble this evening in the West Richland High School Gym in Noble – it all starts with 5th/6th grade C team action at 5:30, then the junior varsity match at 6:00, and the varsity match to follow – while previous coaches will be recognized, a reception will be held after the volleyball matches

*  Illinois defeated Iowa, 66-63 as the Fighting Illini finish up the regular season schedule
*  the win was Illinois’ second consecutive road win against a ranked opponent
*  the Illini improve to 18&13 on the year, and finish in the Big Ten at 7&11
*  attention turns now to the Men's Big Ten Tournament next weekend in Indianapolis
*  there will be four games on Thursday and Friday, semi-finals Saturday, and title game Sunday

 

(OLNEY)  the NJCAA Men’s District 16 Basketball Tournament ended Saturday night
*  top-seeded Vincennes University defeated Olney Central College, 80-66
*  the Trailblazers improve to 31&2 and advance to the National Tournament next week
*  the Blue Knights end the season with 18 wins and 16 losses, but as runner-up in District 16
    *  OCC’s Dimitri Reaves led all scorers in the championship game with 33 points
    *  Reaves was named the Region 24 Most Valuable Player
    *  OCC Coach Mike Burris was named the Region 24 Coach of the Year
    *  the OCC Blue Knights received the District 16 Runner-Up Plaque
*  Vincennes University Coach Todd Franklin received the District 16 Coach of the Year
*  VU’s Devon Foster was named the District 16 Most Valuable Player
