(NEWTON)  in Major League Baseball last night
the Cardinals & Padres were rained out – the teams will play a day/night doubleheader on this Wednesday
* the Midwestern teams that won last night were the White Sox, Pirates, Indians, Twins, and Braves
* Midwestern teams that lost were the Cubs, Royals, Reds, Brewers, Tigers, Astros, and Rangers
so it’s Cardinals / Padres baseball this afternoon at 1:15 and again tonight at 7:15, both games in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  the Fifth Division Illinois Junior Legion Baseball Tournament is set for this coming weekend
the double elimination tourney in Metropolis includes ten downstate teams from Districts 22, 23, 24, and 25
the list includes the top three teams from the District 23 Tournament played in Salem and Dieterich
* they include first place Salem, second place Effingham, and third place Olney
also includes three teams from the District 25 Tournament
* they include first place Metropolis, second place Steeleville, and third place Goreville
the list includes the two top teams from the District 22 Tournament
* they include first place Alton and second place Valmeyer
and the top two teams from the District 24 Tournament
* including first place Pinckneyville and second place West Frankfort
there are five games this coming Friday and five more on Saturday
then after four games on Sunday, the final game, or games, will be played Monday
Olney Post 30 will play their first game at 2:30 Friday afternoon against Steeleville
* a win would move Olney to Sunday action, but a loss would force a 12:15 game on Saturday
the top three teams advance to the State Junior Legion Tournament, July 28th thru 31st, in Decatur

the Olney 14 Year Old All-Stars will compete in the Little League Section Tournament
this will involve only one, single game, to be played at Bill Millspaugh Field in Olney
game time is at 5:00 Friday evening as Olney with host Tri-County from Little League District 17
the winner will move on to the 14 Year Old State Tournament next week in South Holland, Illinois

(NEWTON)  the Jasper County School District has announced fall sports information for Junior High Sports  :  a parents meeting will be held for fall baseball, softball, and cross country on Monday evening, August 1st, at 6:00, in the Jasper County Junior High / Newton Community High School cafeteria – parents of junior high students who want to participate in either or all three sports should attend this meeting – parents will be able to fill out all necessary forms, get practice schedules, game schedules, and pay the $25 participation fee all at the same time – also, all athletes must have an up-to-date physical in order to begin practice – here’s some other important dates  :  the first practice for Junior High softball is next Monday morning, July 25th, from 8:00 to 10:00, at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – a practice/tryout schedule will be passed out at the first practice  :  the first practice for Junior High baseball is Monday morning, August 1st, from 8:00 to 10:00, at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – a complete practice/tryout schedule will be passed out at the August 1st parent’s meeting  :  and the first practice for Junior High cross country is also Monday morning, August 1st, from 7:30 to 8:30, at the Sam Parr State Park, where all practices will be held – a complete practice schedule will be passed out to the August 1st parent’s meeting

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swim Team Competition – the Olney Tigersharks win again on the road Saturday
the Richland County athletes won the Carmi Swimvitational among several teams down in White County
* Olney beat our second place Carmi, 792.5 to 454.5 while Mt. Carmel and Fairfield tied at 313
* Mt. Vernon, Indiana was fifth at 211, followed by Harrisburg at 200 and McLeansboro at 159
high point trophies were awarded to the top three swimmers in each age group
here’s the top swimmers for the Olney Tigersharks from this past Saturday’s event
there were nine Tigersharks that won their age group
* Lauren Eagleson in the 16 year old girls
* Owen Powell in the 15 year old boys
* Emma Gulovsen in the 14 year old girls

the Cardinals split two with Miami, winning Saturday, 5-0 but losing yesterday, 6-3
* other Midwestern teams that split games were the Cubs, Royals, Reds, Pirates, and Brewers
* also splitting games were the Astros, Rangers, Braves, Indians, Tigers, and Twins
* no Midwestern team won or swept both games
* only one team lost both games, that was the White Sox
the Cardinals are back in action tonight the first of four against the Padres at home in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior Legion Baseball – the District 23 East Division Tournament was played
it involved seven teams at the Dieterich site and included four games on Saturday
* 4th-seeded Newton eliminated 6th-seeded Dieterich, 4-3
* 5th-seeded Altamont eliminated 3rd-seeded Teutopolis, 8-7
* 2nd-seeded Effingham beat top-seeded Olney, 6-4
* Altamont eliminated Newton, 10-1
in final East Division game on Sunday at Dieterich
* top-seeded Olney eliminated 5th-seeded Altamont, 9-3

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior Legion Baseball – the District 23 West Division Tournament was held
it involved seven teams at the Salem site and included four games on Saturday
* 4th-seeded Mt. Vernon eliminated the 2nd-seeded Marion County Mudcats,
* 5th-seeded Carlyle eliminated 7th-seeded Centralia,
* 3rd-seeded Salem beat top-seeded Breese Gray, 2-1
* Carlyle eliminated Mt. Vernon,
in final West Division game on Sunday at Salem
* 5th-seeded Carlyle upset top-seeded Breese Gray, 5-2

 

(OLNEY)  then the Junior Legion District 23 Finals were played yesterday at Dieterich
* West Champion Salem beat East Champion Effingham, 7-4
* Olney won the third place game by beating Carlyle, 12-9
the top three teams now advance to the Sectional Tournament next weekend down at Metropolis
Salem, Effingham, and Olney will all play this coming Friday – no schedule has been released as of yet

 

(NEWTON)  in Cal Ripken 12 Year Old Ohio Valley Regional Tournament action at Mattoon
it was final round action yesterday after the Jasper County team undefeated in Pool Play earlier
* in yesterday’s action, Jasper County was eliminated by Hammond, Indiana, 10-0
* Hammond, Indiana then advanced to the championship game by beating Bay Port, Wisconsin, 10-5
* in the championship game – Southeast Lexington, Kentucky beat Hammond, Indiana, 11-4
congratulations to the Jasper County 12 Year Old’s on a job well done this summer
* they finished the season with a winning record and ended up at 7-1 in post-season tournament play

the District 23 East Division Tournament continued with three games last night
* top-seeded Olney beat 5th-seeded Altamont, 4-0
* Dylan Hires threw a one-hit shutout for Olney while striking out two
* Trey Puckett had three hits and two RBI
* Braxton Burgener had a double and two singles
* Luke Lambird had two singles
now at 14-4, Olney Post 30 is back in action this afternoon at 4:00\
Olney will play Effingham in the winner's bracket semi-final

 

(OLNEY)  also in Junior Legion Baseball at the District 23 Tournament, East Division
there were two games played at the host site in Dieterich
* Effingham beat Dieterich, 15-5
* Teutopolis beat South Central, 4-0

* Newton plays Dieterich in elimination game at 12:00 noon
* Altamont plays Teutopolis in a second elimination game at 2:00
* as before mentioned, Olney plays Effingham in the winner's bracket at 4:00
* the 6:00 game has the Newton/Dieterich winner against the Altamont/T-town winner
the tournaments final three games are tomorrow, all at Dieterich

 

(NEWTON)  the Cal Ripken 12 Year Old Ohio Valley Regional continued yesterday
with all the games played in Mattoon
* the Illinois State Champions from Jasper County beat Vincennes in a tough game, 2-1
* going undefeated in Pool Play, Jasper County is now seeded 2nd after pool play
* the Jasper County boys will play the Fairfield, Ohio / Hammond, Indiana winner
* that game is scheduled for 5:30 later this evening
the tournament continues thru today and tonight before ending tomorrow

* it’s a full 15-game schedule set for this Friday night
the Cardinals are at home with the first of three this weekend against the Miami Marlins tonight

 

(NEWTON)  in Cal Ripken 12 Year Old Basebasll Ohio Valley Regional yesterday up in Mattoon
* the State Champs from Newton played very well and picked two victories
* the Jasper County boys won their first game over West Virginia, 17-2
* then Jasper County beat West Kentucky, 11-1
* the Newton squad will finish Pool Play this afternoon at 1:30 against Vincennes
the Tournament is scheduled to continue tomorrow before ending on Sunday

 

(OLNEY)  at the 12 Year Old Little League District One Tournament at Salem last night
* host Salem beat Flora, 10-3 to win the championship
the District One champs will now go to the Sub State Tournament next week up in Beardstown

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior Legion Baseball – the East Division of the District 23 Tournament started last night
there are three very close first round games last night at the higher seed sites
* 7th-seeded Dieterich upset 2nd-seeded Teutopolis, 3-1
* 3rd-seeded Effingham beat 6th-seeded South Central, 4-3
* 5th-seeded Altamont slipped by 4th-seeded Newton, 7-5
the double elimination tournament continues with three games this evening
* top-seeded Olney will host Altamont at Bill Millspaugh Field in Olney at 5:30
* Dieterich plays the Effingham at Dieterich tonight at 5:30
* Teutopolis plays South Central at Dieterich tonight at 7:30
the tournament continues with four games tomorrow and the final three games Sunday, all at Dieterich

   

(OLNEY)  in Junior Legion Baseball – the West Division of the District 23 Tournament began last night
there are three first round games tonight at the higher seed sites
* the 2nd-seeded Marion County Mudcats beat 7th-seeded Centralia, 8-7
* 3rd-seeded Salem beat 6th-seeded Breese Red, 6-3
* 5th-seeded Carlyle beat 4th-seeded Mt. Vernon, 4-1
it’s semi-final action in the winner’s and consolation bracket tonight at Salem
the final games of the tournament will be played in Salem tomorrow night
the top two teams advance to Dieterich for the District 23 Tournament finals on Sunday
