*  the Blue Knights won the first game over Rend Lake College, 5-2
    *  OCC’s Nick Scheller won his third game of the year allowing 2 runs in 8 innings of work
    *  Blaine Alvey led OCC at the plate with 2 hits and 1 RBI
    *  Alex Martin, Cody Thornton, and Ryan Battin each had 1 hit and 1 RBI
*  the Blue Knights won the second game over the host Warriors, 2-0
    *  OCC’s Mitchell Rose won his first game of the year throwing a 1 hitter in 7 innings
    *  Ryan Battin led OCC at the plate with 1 hit and 1 RBI
    *  Troy Paris, Bryce Paxson, Cody Thornton, and Joe Hunt each had 1 hit apiece
*  now at 16&2 overall, 4&1 in the GRAC, the Blue Knights play at Lake Land tomorrow at 3:00

Class 3A @ Springfield  :  Lincoln beat Cahokia, 40-37
Class 4A @ Normal  :  Edwardsville beat Chicago Heights Marian in overtime, 65-60
last night’s winners advance to their respective State Tournaments this Friday and Saturday up in Peoria

 

(OLNEY)  the 2013-2014 Midland Trail Conference Boys Basketball All Conference Teams are out
*  selected by the coaches as the MTC Player of the Year was Billy Irwin of Wayne City
*  eleven others were selected to the MTC All Conference Team
    *  North Clay’s Lawson Britton – Grayville’s Patrick Murphy – Waltonville’s Justin Wincester

*  the Class S Region 16 Regional at Noble will begin with semi-final action tomorrow
    *  includes teams from Noble, Clay City, St. Mary’s Mt. Carmel, Allendale, and Cisne
*  the Class L Region 8 Regional includes Olney, Flora, Mt. Carmel, and Salem
    *  it will be played next Monday with the semi-finals and championship on the same evening
*  all of the downstate regional champions go straight to their respective state tournament

 

(NOBLE)  in Girl’s High School Softball – some area teams begin their season today
*  the Noble / Clay City Lady Wildcats are at home this afternoon in Noble hosting Flora at 4:15
    *  the Lady Cats will host their 4th Annual “Spring Freeze” Tournament this Saturday in Noble
    *  teams from Edwards County, Altamont, Vandalia, Hutsonville-Palestine, and Red Hill will take part
    *  games will be played at 9:00, 10:30, and 12 noon using both fields at the High School and City Park
*  also Saturday, the Olney Lady Tigers will host their Annual Varsity Softball Tournament at ERHS
    *  the other teams involved are Newton, Charleston, and Robinson
    *  the games will be played at 10:00, 12 noon, 2:00, and 4:00

 

(OLNEY)  in Men’s College Basketball – the Fighting Illini begin their postseason action on the road
*  Illinois is a #2 seed in the National Invitational Tournament which started last night
*  due to renovation work at the State Farm Center, the Illini play at #7 Boston University tonight

(NEWTON)  Newton Community High School will host the 2nd Annual DodgeBall Tournament on Saturday, March 29th, starting that evening at 5:30 – it’s for freshmen thru adult age participants, with ten people per team and at least three opposite sex members – the cost is at $10 per team member, plus consent forms must be signed – there will be team prizes, concessions available, and admission is only $2 per person – all proceeds go towards the Newton Elementary Mentoring and Leadership / PBIS Programs – forms and entry fees must be returned to the Elementary or High Schools in Newton by this Friday, March 21st – teams from Jasper and all surrounding counties are welcome to take part in the fundraising activity

 

(CLAY CITY)  the Clay City Schools will have their winter sports awards program in the Junior High School Commons Area, starting at 6:00 – it’s for those that participated in Junior High and High School sports, including basketball, cheerleading, and scholar bowl – all are invited – refreshments afterwards

*  the Blue Knights began Great Rivers Athletic Conference action on Friday at home on Conley Field
    *  Olney Central College beat Southeastern Illinois, 8-2 in a nine inning game
        *  winning pitcher Ryan Dills threw all 9 innings with 10 strikeouts and only 1 earned run – now 3&0
        *  at the plate – Jacob Snodgrass had 3 hits and 1 RBI – Jay Nam had 1 hit and 4 RBI
*  on Saturday, the Blue Knights split a GRAC doubleheader down at Southeastern Illinois College
    *  Olney Central College lost the first game to the host Falcons in 9 innings, 2-6
        *  the losing pitcher was A.J. Maroni, giving up 2 earned runs on 7 hits in 5 innings of work
        *  at the plate – Jay Nam had 2 hits and 1 RBI – Jacob Snodgrass had 1 hit and the other RBI
    *  the Blue Knights then won the second game in 7 innings, 6-1
        *  winning pitcher Devin Williams threw all 7 innings with 4 strikeouts and only 2 hits – now 1&1
        *  at the plate – Alex Martin was 4 for 4 – Jacob Snodgrass had 3 hits and 2 RBI
*  now 14&2 overall, now 2&1 in the GRAC, the Blue Knights play two today at Rend Lake College

(OLNEY)  in High School Baseball from yesterday – North Clay and Oblong had their season opener
*  North Clay came away with the victory, defeating Oblong, 11-1 in five innings
    *  North Clay’s Braden McNeely was the winning pitcher, plus he had 2 hits and 1 RBI
    *  also for North Clay – Adam Cox had 3 hits and 1 RBI
    *  for Oblong, James Rogers had an RBI double
*  North Clay plays at Noble/Clay City Friday – Oblong plays at Cumberland in non-LIC action

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior High Wrestling – the Olney Cubs are continuing to do well on the mats
*  thirteen Olney Cubs competed recently in the IKWF Sectionals over in Highland
    *  Kyle Beasley and Curtis Frazier each finished in 2nd place to become State Qualifiers
    *  Cameron Flanagan took 3rd place and also became a State Qualifier
    *  these three young men competed in last week’s State Finals in their age and weight brackets
*  coming up this Friday, the Cubs have two wrestlers going to the Illinois Midget Championships
    *  Kyle Boughan and Gage Nuttall will compete in the 8-10 year old competition in Danville
*  congratulations to one and all involved in the Olney Cubs Wrestling Club

*  the District 16 Champions from Southwestern Illinois are the tournament's 22nd seed
    *  with their 23&5 record, the Lady Blue Storm will play today at 12 noon in first round action

*  the tournament semi-final games were played Saturday up in Indianapolis
    *  top-seeded Michigan beat 5th-seeded Ohio State, 72-69
    *  3rd-seeded Michigan State beat 2nd-seeded Wisconsin, 83-75
*  the Tournament's Championship game was played yesterday afternoon
    *  then Michigan State upset top-seed and regular season Big Ten Champ Michigan, 69-55

 

(OLNEY)  meanwhile, seven Big Ten teams will continue to play in the postseason of  2014
*  Michigan State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Iowa have been named to the NCAA Tournament
*  while Minnesota and Illinois has been selected to take part in the National Invitational Tournament
    *  the Fighting Illini (19-14) earned a #2 seed and will play #7 seed Boston University
    *  due to renovations at the State Farm Center the game will be played at Agganis Arena in Boston
    *  the matchup will take place this coming Wednesday night with a 6:00 start time

*  the Lady Knights swept a non-conference doubleheader from Morthland College
    *  OCC took the opener, 10-1 and then won the second game, 11-1
*  the Lady Knights then dropped their GRAC twinbill on the road down at Mt. Carmel
    *  OCC dropped two conference games to Wabash Valley, 10-1 and 5-4
*  the Lady Knights are now 11&3 overall, now 0&2 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference

Class 1A  :  Mt. Pulaski beat Pontiac St. Mary's in two games to win its first round match

    *  the Honeybears will now return for the state championship match tomorrow night
Class 3A  :  Pana beat Lockport Kelvin Grove in three games for a first round victory

*  Illinois came close, but lost its bid to upset top-seeded Michigan, falling to the Wolverines, 64-63
    *  the Fighting Illini drop to 19&14 on the year and now await a possible bid for post-season action

    *  5th-seeded Ohio State came back to beat 4th-seeded Nebraska, 71-67
    *  2nd-seeded Wisconsin beat 7th-seeded Minnesota, 80-55

*  top-seeded Amoeba Press came from 11 points down to beat 3rd-seeded Berryville Vineyards, 58-54
*  in their first year in the League, Amoeba Press finishes at 23&2 – Berryville Vineyards finishes at 17&10
*  a big “thank you” to all the League players, coaches, volunteers, and supporters over the past few months

*  the Blue Knights moved their home Great Rivers Athletic Conference game to later this afternoon
    *  the 3:00 nine inning game will be against Southeastern Illinois out at Dennis Conley Field at OCC
    *  the Blue Knights then travel to Southeastern Illinois for a GRAC twinbill tomorrow afternoon
*  the Lady Knights postponed their GRAC doubleheader at Lake Land until next Wednesday, March 19th
    *  the Lady Knights travel to West Frankfort to play at Morthland Christian College
    *  it’s non-conference doubleheader action against the Lady Patriots at 2:00 and 4:00 this afternoon

Class 2A @ Effingham  :  Albion defeated St. Elmo in three games

*  a few downstate area teams are taking part among the eight teams in each of the four classes
*  they include Stewardson-Strasburg, Effingham, Pana, and Mt. Zion

 

(OLNEY)  the Boy’s Class 1A and 2A Country 3-Point Showdown Preliminaries were last night in Peoria
*  some downstate shooters advance to today’s final round later this afternoon and tonight
Class 1A  :  Collin Klingler of Clay City was among the top four shooters advancing to the finals
    *  the others were from Hanover River Ridge, Flanagan Cornell, and Colfax Ridgeview
Class 2A  :  Nolan Luke of Pinckneyville was among the top four advancing to today’s finals
    *  others were from Greenville, Williamsville, and Hoopeston Area
the final rounds of shooting are this afternoon and later tonight up in Carver Arena

(NEWTON)  Newton Community High School will host the 2nd Annual DodgeBall Tournament on Saturday, March 29th, starting that evening at 5:30 – it’s for freshmen thru adult age participants, with ten people per team and at least three opposite sex members – the cost is at $10 per team member, plus consent forms must be signed – there will be team prizes, concessions available, and admission is only $2 per person – all proceeds go towards the Newton Elementary Mentoring and Leadership / PBIS Programs – forms and entry fees must be returned to the Elementary or High Schools in Newton by Friday, March 21st – teams from Jasper and all surrounding counties are welcome to take part in the fundraising activity
