* Midwestern teams that won were the Cubs – Indians – Reds – Royals
* Midwestern teams that lost were the – Pirates – White Sox – Twins – Tigers - Brewers
the Cardinals are back in action this afternoon with the second of three against the Rangers in St. Louis

 

(NEWTON)  the National Basketball Association’s Finals will end on Sunday night
* Cleveland tied the best-of-seven series at three games each with a win Thursday night over Golden State
the Warriors return home to Oakland, California to host the Cavaliers in game seven tomorrow night

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Football this weekend – the 42nd Annual Shrine Game is this afternoon
it’s a 1:00 kickoff  in Tucci Stadium at Illinois Wesleyan University in Normal
there are a few downstate players on the East Team roster, including
* Offensive Lineman Bodee Steber from the Newton Eagles
* also from the Little Illini Conference – Casey-Westfield’s  Wide Receiver / Tight End Cory Carver
* plus others from Sullivan, Taylorville, Monticello, Centralia, Eldorado, Murphysboro, and Herrin
among the twelve coaches involved, downstate Coach Gary Carter of Murphysboro is an East Assistant
it’s all sponsored by the Illinois Coaches Association and the Shriners of Illinois
last year’s event brought in over $24,000 for Shriners Hospitals to continue “free” medical care for children

 

(OLNEY)  the USTA Tumbling Nationals are this weekend, down in Knoxville, Tennessee
the best of luck to the 65 athletes and coaches from the Illinois Gymnastics Club in Olney taking part

(OLNEY)  the Olney Junior Pro Football League will have two additional sign ups coming up the first of next week – that’s Monday night and Tuesday night, June 20th and 21st, from 6:00 to 8:00, each night, at the Musgrove Park Pavilion – the registration fee is $40 per player – more information available each night

 

(OLNEY)  the 2016 Olney Tiger 5K Run & Walk is this morning at the RCHS Veteran’s Hall – it’s late and pre-registration going on now, with the 5K Run & Walk to begin at 8:00 – the One Mile Fun Run starts at 8:45 – there’s t-shirts for all entries and random drawings for prizes – trophies will be awarded to the various categories, both male & female – all proceeds to the RCHS cross country program

(NEWTON)  in High School Football this weekend – the 42nd Annual Shrine Game is tomorrow afternoon
it’s a 1:00 kickoff  in Tucci Stadium at Illinois Wesleyan University in Normal with 88 high school players
* all funds raised thru the event, including concessions, will support Shriners Hospital for Children
* the event banquet at the Memorial Center is tonight, followed by a VIP event at the DoubleTree

the Great Rivers Athletic Conference has two new faces coaching this year
the newest named Head Coach at Lake Land College, south of Mattoon, is Brandon Colvin
* Colvin officially begins his new duties at Lake Land next Monday, June 20th
* the Lakers program will be the 8th coaching job since Colvin began coaching in 2005
* Colvin has coached in Iowa, Texas, Minnesota, and most recently in North Dakota
* he’s also coached overseas in Qatar, Bahrain, and Denmark
* Colvin succeeds  Nathan Courtney, who resigned last month after only two years at Lake Land
the other GRAC newcomer is Luke Stuckey, the newly named Head Coach at Lincoln Trail College
* Stuckey is a former assistant coach for the Orlando Magic NBA team
* he coached the Central Florida Marvel professional club in Orlando this past year
* Stuckey succeeds Mike Ray who retired from coaching this past spring after three years at Lincoln Trail
Coach Mike Burris at Olney Central College continues his work leading the Blue Knights
* a former Blue Knight himself, Burris begins his 12th year leading Men’s Basketball at Olney Central
there’s also no change at the helm of the Olney Central College Lady Knights basketball program
* the younger Burris brother, Clint, also a former Blue Knight, is starting his 7th year leading the women

the Tigersharks are scheduled to be back in the water this Saturday at the McLeansboro Invitational

 

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Board of Directors met this past Monday night in Bloomington
the Board approved three State Final contracts for the 2016-2017 school year
* the IHSA Class 1A Boys Soccer State Finals will have a new home at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria
* the IHSA Class 3A & 4A State Baseball Finals will stay at Silver Cross Field in Joliet thru the year 2021
* the IHSA Dual Team Wrestling State Finals will stay at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington thru 2021
the Board also agreed to implement Specific Guidelines for Managing Heat & Heat Illness
* the guidelines will be in place for all State Series contests
* plus, all IHSA member schools are urged to adopt the guidelines for regular-season contests as well
the Board also agreed to increase State Series ticket prices by $1 per game/session/day at the Regional level
* includes volleyball, girls & boys basketball & soccer, individual wrestling, softball, and baseball
the Board agreed to form an Ad Hoc Committee to review the IHSA classification process
the IHSA Board heard a report on concussion reporting from Certified Athletic Trainers throughout Illinois
* this was for the just ended 2015-2016 school year
* the IHSA is compiling historic concussion reporting data to be released in a report later this year

Cleveland held on in California to beat Golden State in game five, 112 to 97
the Warriors lead in the best-of-seven championship series is now three games to two over the Cavaliers
game six switches back to Cleveland on Thursday night – game seven, if needed, would be Sunday night

the Cardinals were idle until they host the Astros tonight in St. Louis
* Midwestern teams that won last night were the White Sox, Royals, Reds, and Twins

(OLNEY)  the Illinois State Special Olympic Games were held this past weekend up in Normal
Congratulations to three local athletes that competed representing the Olney Rebels team
* Toni Jones received a Golf Medal for winning two Bocce matches by the 12-10 score in both
* Ryan Farrar received a Bronze Medal competing against six others in the Mini Javelin competition
* Terrie Pickerel took part in the 100 Meter Race Walk, finishing first in a division of seven athletes
there were a total 4,200 statewide athletes that competed at this year’s State Games for Special Olympics
thanks for all the donations as $40,000 was raised for Special Olympics in the Law Enforcement Torch Run
