* the Midwestern winning teams were the Braves – Pirates – Indians – Royals - Cubs
* teams that lost last night were the Brewers – Reds – White Sox – Twins
the Cardinals are back at home this afternoon against the Diamondbacks in St. Louis

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Baseball yesterday – Newton won their Class 2A Regional Title
the Eagles beat Carlyle, 8-4 as host Newton outhit the visiting Indians, 12 to 5
* Mitch Jansen was the winning pitcher, while Brock Mammoser picked up a save
* Beau Prater led Newton with a 3-run home run & Brock Mammoser had 2 hits and 2 RBI
* Mitch Bierman and Tim Weber also had a 2 hit game
Newton improves to 18-9 and advances to the Class 2A Sectional at Teutopolis
the Eagles will play the Piasa Southwestern / Dupo regional winner next Wednesday

 

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Boys Tennis Sectionals started yesterday and continue today
the Olney Tigers are among the eight teams down at the Herrin Sectional
two of the Tigers advanced in doubles action from yesterday

(OLNEY)  the Olney Tiger Boys Basketball Camp is next week, Monday thru Thursday, May 23rd thru 26th, in Ron Herrin Gym at Richland County High School in Olney – sessions for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders are each morning from 10:30 to 12:00 noon – sessions for 4th and 5th graders are each afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 – the registration will be held 30 minutes prior to each session next Monday – for more information, contact RCHS Olney Tiger Basketball Coach Rob Flanagan, at 393-7072 – the Olney Tiger Boys Basketball Camp for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades is the following week, Tuesday thru Friday, May 31st thru June 3rd, each afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00, also at RCHS – registration at 12 noon on that Tuesday

while all Lady Eagles did their best, only one qualified for tomorrow's Class 1A Finals
* McKendra Barthelme qualified in both the long jump and triple jump
* McKendra Barthelme also qualified for the 100 meter high hurdles and the 300 meter low hurdles
the Class 1A Finals are tomorrow in O’Brien Stadium at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston

Robinson won the fifteen team event by beating out the second place host Eagles, 127.5 to 88
rounding out the top five were Altamont (54), Vandalia (45), and Cumberland (40)
then Teutopolis (39.5), Marshall (30), Red Hill (29), Palestine-Hutsonville (24, and Patoka (18)
St. Anthony (15.5), Casey-Westfield (14), Lawrenceville (12), Flora (11.5), and Oblong (8)
* host Newton had seven young men advance to the State Meet next weekend
the second place Eagles won three of the eighteen events
* Nick Cartright won both the shot put and discus throw
* Joe Stone won the 800 meter run
Newton had three 2nd place finishes

* Gage Miller led Olney with the only 2 hit performance, while Jacob Greifzu had Olney's only RBI hit
* Olney’s other hits came from Connor Adams, Tanner Hout, and Chance Runyon
now at 14-10-1, the Tigers play Harrisburg next Thursday in the Class 3A Regional at Mt. Vernon

the Carlyle at Newton Regional Championship game has been moved to this afternoon in Newton

the Herrin High School Sectional will involve eight teams from the downstate area
* the Olney Tigers will go up against Fairfield, Mt. Vernon, Benton, and Carbondale
* the other remaining teams are Marion, Massac County, and Herrin
the Casey-Westfield Sectional in Clark County will include ten area teams
* the Newton Eagles will face Robinson, Teutopolis, Paris, Mattoon, Effingham, and Charleston
* the other remaining teams are St. Anthony, Shelbyville, and Casey-Westfield
the Troy Sectional will include Flora, Highland, and six other teams
the Belleville East Sectional will include Salem, Centralia, and five other teams

the Olney Tigers were one of the fifteen teams that took part in the eighteen track and field events
Tolono Unity won the Sectional by beating second place Mattoon, 125 to 76
Champaign Central was third (49), while Mt. Zion was fourth (47) and Mahomet-Seymour was fifth (39)
Effingham and Monticello tied for sixth (37), then Rantoul (35), Decatur MacArthur (34), and Urbana (27)
the Olney Tigers finished eleventh (21), then Clinton (12), Paris (10), Charleston (9), and Mt. Carmel (0)
two Tigers from Olney will advance to next weekend’s Class 2A State Meet in Charleston
* Ben Lynch finished 2nd in the pole vault
* Derek Deimel finished 2nd in the shot put

* John Grunloh led Newton with 3 hits, including a double and 2 RBI
* Newton had home runs from Nate Meinhart, Mitch Bierman, and Beau Prater
now at 17-9 on the year, Newton will play Carlyle in the Regional Championship game Saturday
* Carlyle won the second semi-final game yesterday over Flora, 3-0

there were over 300 junior high athletes competing and representing over 50 downstate schools
St. Bruno Pinckneyville won the Girls Class S State Track Meet with Saint Clare O’Fallon finishing second
* the Olney St. Joe Lady Wildcats finished in 15th place with seven girls competing in eight events

* Chelsea Ochs was 3rd in the 100 meter dash
* Evelyn Atkins was 4th in the high jump
* Chelsea Ochs was 6th in the 200 meter dash
* Haven Doll was 12th in the 1600 meter run

Field School in Texico won the Boys Class S State Track Meet with Adams School finishing second
* the St. Joe Wildcats did not finish among the top teams but were represented well by four young men

* Gavin Dorn, Cadin Ackman, Parker Mann, and Colin Clodfelter were 9th in the 1600 meter relay
* Gavin Dorn was 11th in the 7th grade 100 meter dash

Morrison Junior High won the Boys Class 8A State Track Meet – Rock Falls St. Andrews finished second
* among area schools – Altamont was 5th, Paris Crestwood was 18th, and Effingham St. Anthony was 26th there was one local Jasper County athlete that competed for the Newton St. Thomas Saints
* Seth Weber was 7th in the high jump

(OLNEY)  the Olney Tiger Boy’s Basketball Camp will be held next week, Monday thru Thursday, May 23rd thru 26th, in Ron Herrin Gym at Richland County High School in Olney – sessions for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders will be held each morning from 10:30 to 12:00 noon – sessions for 4th and 5th graders will be held each afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 – the registration will be held 30 minutes prior to each session next Monday – for more information, contact RCHS Olney Tiger Basketball Coach Rob Flanagan, at 393-7072 – the Olney Tiger Boy’s Basketball Camp for those in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be held the following week, Tuesday thru Friday, May 31st thru June 3rd, each afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00, also at RCHS

the Class 2A Regional began with higher seeded Newton hosting Lawrenceville
the Eagles beat LIC foe Lawrenceville, 8-2 as Newton outhit the visiting Indians, 12 to 10
* Tim Weber got the win for Newton by pitching the final 4 innings of the game in relief of Nate Meinhart
* Luke Geier led Newton with 3 hits and 2 RBI while Connor Bierman had 2 hits and 2 RBI
* also with a two hit game was Mitch Bierman and John Grunloh
Newton improves to 16-9 on the year and will host the sub-regional top-seeded Breese Mater Dei tomorrow

the Tigers outlasted the rain and beat Centralia, 10-5 as Olney outhit the visiting Orphans, 10 to 8
* Dylan Hires was Olney’s winning pitcher allowing only 3 earned runs while striking out 5
* Hunter Wyatt led Olney with 2 hits and 2 RBI, while Chance Runyon had 2 hits and 1 RBI
* Luke Lambird also had a 2 hit day – Connor Adams and Mason Kocher each had an RBI hit
now at 14-8-1, the Tigers are back in action tomorrow as they host Charleston in Olney
