(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Basketball last night – Newton dropped two games at home
the Lady Eagles lost a tough varsity game to Effingham in overtime, 43-36
* Grace Hartrich led Newton with 10 points while Jennifer Pilman scored 9 points
Effingham also won the junior varsity game, 36-29
now at 12-6, the Lady Eagles return to LIC action Thursday night when they host Lawrenceville

there were several games involving Little Illini Conference teams, all in non-conference action
* Lawrenceville beat Fairfield, 49-39
* Edwards County beat Ziegler-Royalton, 51-12

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Wrestling last Wednesday – Olney did well at Argenta-Oreana
the Tigers finished in 2nd place among fifteen teams in the annual Bomber Classic Invitational
although Olney had no champions, the Tigers had five second place finishers
* RCHS senior Naaman Umfleet was 2nd in the 285 pound class
* senior Zach Shoulders was 2nd in the 220 pound class
* sophomore Kyle Beasley was 2nd in the 195 pound class
* senior Collin Smith was 2nd in the 152 pound class
* freshman Login Martin was 2nd in the 113 pound class
there were Olney Tigers that finished in third place
* junior Nathan DeMeyer in the 132 pound class
* and freshman Ean Pottorff in the 126 pound class
two more Olney Tigers finished in fourth place
* senior Trevor Jones in the 182 pound class
* and junior Steven Pence in the 145 pound class

* Gibson City – Fisher won the event with 231 points, 52 points better than Olney (179)
* Illini Bluffs was third at 145 points, followed by Monticello (140) and Decatur Eisenhower (135)
* Camp Point was sixth at 124.5, followed by Rochester (107), Riverton (104), and Charleston (88.5)
* in tenth place was Decatur MacArthur (77.5), then Grant Park (53) and the host Bombers with 51.5 points
* Warrensburg-Latham was thirteenth (30), followed by Quincy Notre Dame (19.5) and Hoopeston (15)
the Wrestling Tigers are back on the mats tonight as they travel to Fairfield to battle the Mules

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys Junior High Basketball last night – the JMTC Tournament began with first round play
it was 4th-seeded Olney St. Joe beating 5th-seeded Clay City, 49-16
* the Wildcats were led by Lance Mitchell and Cadin Ackman, each with 10 points
St. Joe returns to Clay City tonight to face top-seeded North Clay in a semi-final game
the other semi-final had 2nd-seeded Cisne up against 3rd-seeded South Central
the Tournament’s championship game will follow the third place game Thursday night at Clay City

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls Junior High Basketball last night – Olney Richland County swept two on the road
the Lady Cubs won the 8th grade game at North Knox, Indiana, 38-20 as the varsity improves to 13-7
* Olney was led by Tara Hughes with 10 points, while Raegan Hires scored 9 points
Olney also won the 7th grade game, 49-19 as the junior varsity squad improves to 8-11 on the year
the Lady Cubs are back in action Thursday night when they host Mt. Vernon in the RCMS Gym
it will be 8th Grade Night Thursday evening as all 8th grade players & parents will be recognized

the Lady Illini lost a tough four-point conference game in Indiana, falling to Purdue Sunday, 69-65
the Illinois women drop to 7-6 on the year, now 0-2 in the Big Ten Conference
the Lady Illini will try to end a five-game losing streak as they host Minnesota this Thursday night
it’s an 8:00 tipoff in the Big Ten matchup at the State Farm Center in Champaign

the Illini are back on the court Thursday night in league action at Michigan State

 

(OLNEY)  in Women’s Junior College Basketball yesterday – OCC wins easily at home in “The Dungeon”
the Lady Knights defeated the Millikin University JV squad, 64—40
* OCC was led by Olney native Jaycie Luna with 15 points as the freshman knocked down five 3-pointers
* sophomore Alicia Hasler hit four 3’s for 14 points and sophomore Weslee Wilson added 12 points
the Lady Knights pull even on the year at 7-7 going into GRAC action this Wednesday night
both the Lady Knights and Blue Knights travel to John A. Logan College for games at 5:30 and 7:30
it’s back to a full schedule in Region & GRAC Men’s & Women’s Junior College Hoops Wednesday night

the tournament continues with eight more games on this Tuesday
* the Olney Lady Tigers finish pool play with a 10:00 game this morning against Vandalia
* the Lady Tigers will then play in cross pool play later today and their final game tomorrow

the Holiday Tournament in Dieterich continued with six games on Monday
* the Newton Eagles lost two games, falling to Okaw Valley, 67-57 and losing to Dieterich, 52-49
* the Eagles will return today to play in the 5th place game against Christ Our Rock Lutheran at 2:30

* Christ Our Rock beat North Clay / Louisville, 52-48
* Okaw Valley defeated Beecher City / Cowden-Herrick, 63-58
* Arcola beat Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 73-37
* Oblong beat Arcola, 60-54
that sets up the final four games for this afternoon and evening in the new gym
* North Clay / Louisville plays Beecher City / Cowden-Herrick in the 7th place game at 1:00 today
* the Newton Eagles play Christ Our Rock Lutheran in the 5th place game at 2:30 this afternoon
* Arcola plays Okaw Valley in this afternoon’s 3rd place game at 4:00
* and tonight’s championship game at 8:00 will feature host Dieterich against Oblong

* the Olney Tigers lost two close games, falling to Chester, 40-39 and losing to Benton, 56-51
* the Tigers return for a 10:30 cross pool play game this morning and their final game later today
