* the Redbirds beat the Cubs Saturday, 5-3 and beat the defending World Champs yesterday, 5-0
the Cardinals have today off before starting a two game series at home tomorrow night against Boston

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Baseball – the Region 24 Tournament pods ended yesterday
at the 2nd-seeded Wabash Valley site in Mt. Carmel the two first round games were played Friday
* the Olney Central College Blue Knights beat Lake Land, 3-1
* Wabash Valley beat Kaskaskia, 5-1
in the second and third round games on Saturday at Mt. Carmel
* the host Warriors beat Olney Central College, 5-1
* Kaskaskia eliminated Lake Land, 10-4
* Kaskaskia eliminated the Blue Knights, 5-3
in yesterday’s championship game at Mt. Carmel
* Wabash Valley beat Kaskaskia, 8-6
at the top-seeded John A. Logan site in Carterville the two first round games were played Friday
* Southwestern Illinois upset John A. Logan, 11-10
* Lincoln Trail College beat Rend Lake, 7-2
in the second and third round games on Saturday in Carterville
* Lincoln Trail beat Southwestern Illinois, 6-1
* John A. Logan eliminated Rend Lake, 8-3
* Southwestern Illinois eliminated John A. Logan, 8-6
in yesterday’s championship game at Carterville
* Lincoln Trail beat Southwestern Illinois, 14-9
Wabash Valley and Lincoln Trail advance to the Northern District Tournament to be played at Mt. Carmel
* also includes Indian Hills and the winner of South Suburban and Triton College
the Northern District Tournament will be this coming Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Tennis Saturday – the LIC Conference Tournament was in Casey
Robinson won the Tournament Title by beating out 2nd place Paris – Olney finished in 3rd place
* Casey-Westfield was 4th, followed by Flora and Newton
Olney had one All Conference Player finishing 3rd in the singles competition
* Austin Atwood beat a Flora player, then lost to Robinson, and beat Robinson for 3rd place in singles
Olney had two players that finished 4th in the doubles competition
* Jack Bettis & Tanner Hendrickson beat Robinson, lost to Casey-Westfield, and lost to Paris
Olney had one other player in the singles competition
* Adam Brewers beat a Flora player, lost to Robinson, and split two matches against Casey-Westfield
Olney’s other two players were in doubles competition
* Cade McDowell & Kye Stallard beat Flora, lost to Paris, and lost to Newton
the Tennis Tigers finish their regular season schedule tomorrow at Casey-Westfield

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Softball from Saturday – Olney split two games in their Lady Tiger Classic
the Lady Tigers won their first game over South Central, 8-2
* Aubrey Page was the winning pitcher
* Sophia Colclasure led Olney with two hits and three RBI
* Dani Hawkins and Aubrey Page each had two hits and two RBI
Oblong won the second game by beating Lawrenceville
in the championship game, the Lady Tigers fell short to Oblong, 9-6
* Aubrey Page had two doubles and an RBI
* Jesika Ochs had two hits and two RBI and Sophia Colclasure had a two RBI hit
now at 17-11 on the year, the Lady Tigers play again Wednesday at Charleston

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Baseball from Friday – Olney squeaked out a close win at home
the Tigers beat Newton, 7-6 in nine innings as Olney outhit the visiting Eagles, 12 to 10
* Gage Miller threw the last two innings to pick up the win
* for Olney, Trey Puckett singled, doubled, and had two RBI and Dylan Hires had a two RBI double
* for Newton, John Grunloh with two hits and two RBI – Nate Meinhart and Mitch Bierman had two hits
the Eagles are back in action today traveling to play South Central in Kinmundy
the Tigers are back in action today traveling southwest to play at Centralia

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Softball Friday – Newton squeaked out a one run win
the Lady Eagles beat Teutopolis, 2-1 as the hits were even at 5 apiece for each team
* Newton’s winning pitcher was Kristen Hardiek
* Abby Frohning and Taylor Smith each had an RBI double – Ariel Richards also doubled
the Lady Eagles begin Regional action this Wednesday at Casey-Westfield against the host Lady Warriors

 

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Class 1A & 2A Softball Regionals begin today at various sites in Illinois

* Class 2A @ Casey-Westfield  :  Paris plays Marshall

(NEWTON)  the Newton Women’s Tennis League is looking for those interested in competing this summer, however the sign up deadline is next today, this May 15th – with enough players, the League should be split into two separate groups, including the Advanced Players and the Intermediate Players, which will all compete within their own group – the cost is $25 and all area women age 18 years or older are welcome – the 12-week season begins May 31st with all matches played on Wednesdays in Newton – for details, or to sign up, contact Emily by calling  618-783-3502  or by email at  This email address is being protected from spambots. (OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball – the Cardinals returned to play last night
* the Redbirds comeback fell short to the Cubs 3-2
The Cardinals and the Cubs will take to the field again this afternoon for game 2 of the weekend series

 

(OLNEY/NEWTON) in High School Baseball – Olney defeated Newton in non-conference play
*  The Tigers outlasted the Eagles in 9 innings 7-6
*  Gage Miller picked up the win for the Tigers pitching the final two innings
*  Olney was led at the plate by Trey Puckett who went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI
*  Landon Pride, Brandon Murphy, Dylan Hires and Kaleb Foster all with RBI as well
*  The Eagles were led at the plate by John Grunloh’s 2RBI 2 for 3 day
*  Mitch Bierman and Nick Cohorst also with an RBI.
*  Newton will next be in action next week in Class 2A Regional Play
*  Olney returns to regular season play Monday on the road to Centralia

(OLNEY)  the Hospice of Southeastern Illinois 5K Run / Walk is set for Saturday morning, June 3rd, beginning at 8:00, at the Richland County Middle School in Olney – folks can pre-register at the Hospice office in the Home Care Building at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital during regular office hours or sign up on the morning of the 5K Run / Walk event from 7:00 to 7:45 – the registration fee is only $20 per person – complimentary t-shirts go to the first 50 individuals who register – for more details or information, call Nancy at the Hospice office at  618-392-2745  – or go online, at  www.richlandmemorialhospital.com

 

(OLNEY)  the Olney Tiger Boys Basketball Camp will be held May 22nd thru 25th, Monday thru Thursday, at the Richland County Elementary School Gym in Olney – the camp is open to any boy entering grades 1 thru 8 with the cost at $30 per player – sessions for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders will be held from 8:00 to 9:30 – sessions for 4th and 5th graders will be held from 10:00 to 12 noon – and sessions for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 – registration will be held 30 minutes prior to each session on that Monday – registration forms are available at all of the Richland County Schools in Olney – for more information or details, call Olney Tiger Basketball Coach Rob Flanagan, at  618-393-7072

 

(OLNEY)  the Olney Tiger and Lady Tiger Track Teams will host the first-ever Little Tiger Track & Field Meet this morning from 9:00 to 11:00, at the Richland County High School Track in Olney – all Kindergarten thru 5th grade students from the St. Joseph School & the Richland County Elementary School are invited to take part in various events, including sprints, distance running, hurdles, the long jump, and shot put (softball throw) – the event will also include instruction by Olney Tiger / Lady Tiger athletes and coaches, plus there will be grade-level competition, & the event will end with a Family Mile Fun Walk – registration forms will be accepted until 8:45 this morning – the cost is only $10 per child

* the Redbirds will start a three game weekend series against the Cubs tonight in St. Louis
it’s the start of an eight game, ten day, home stand with Boston and San Francisco coming in next week

 

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Girls Class 1A Track Sectional yesterday at Newton had 14 teams taking part
Teutopolis was the sectional winner as the Lady Shoes outscored 2nd place Newton, 126.43 to 88.43
* Effingham St. Anthony was 3rd with 77 points, followed by Neoga (74) and Casey-Westfield (57.43)
* then Altamont (27), Cumberland (26.43), Brownstown (18), Marshall (16.43), and Oblong (16)
* then Palestine-Hutsonville (15.43), Red Hill (9), Christ Our Rock Lutheran (6), and Flora (0.43)
here’s the Newton Lady Eagles that advanced to next weekend’s State Track Meet at EIU in Charleston
Newton had five 2nd place and one 3rd place finishes – congratulations to one and all
* Brooklyn Herman was 2nd in the 100 meter dash
* Abby Stone was 2nd in the 800 meter run
* Mikala Haarman, Emma Weber, Alex Haarman, and Tori Zumbahlen were 2nd in the 800 meter relay
* Mallory Bergbower was 2nd in the high jump
* Emma Weber was 2nd in the triple jump
* Tori Zumbahlen, Brooklyn Herman, Claire Carr, and Abby Stone were 3rd in the 1600 meter relay
the State Class 1A Preliminaries are next Thursday, May 18th, followed by the Class 1A Finals on Saturday

 

(OLNEY)  the IHSA Girls Class 2A Track Sectional yesterday at Mattoon had 15 teams taking part
Monticello won the sectional by beating out 2nd place Urbana, 108 to 102 – Charleston was 3rd with 66
* Decatur Eisenhower was 4th with 54 points, followed by Mattoon (44) and Mahomet-Seymour (43)
* then Tolono Unity (41), Clinton (29), Mt. Zion (25), Rantoul (18), and Robinson (11)
* Olney finished 12th with 10 points, then Effingham (3), Decatur MacArthur (2), and Mt. Carmel (1)
although no Lady Tigers will advance to the Class 2A State Meet, two girls did place in their events
* Cameron Hough was 3rd in the 3200 meter run, plus she set a new RCHS school record at  11:37
* Leah Snyder was 4th in the shot put
congratulations to the Olney Lady Tiger track team this year for competing hard

the top two teams will advance to the NJCAA District Tournament to be hosted by the top team
the District Tournament will host other Region winners from Chicago, Iowa, and Northern Illinois
the District winner will advance to the NJCAA National Baseball Tournament out in Colorado

* the Redbirds beat Miami, 7-5 to gain the series sweep over the host Marlins
with today off, the Cardinals return home to host a weekend series against the Cubs starting tomorrow night

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior College Baseball – Olney Central College picks up another win
the Blue Knights this past Monday beat Vincennes University, 6-3
* OCC improves to 40-13 on the year after finishing at 18-8 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference
the Region 24 Tournaments begin tomorrow with two, four team, double elimination events
* 2nd-seeded Wabash Valley will host Olney Central, Lincoln Trail, and Lake Land
* top-seeded John A. Logan will host Rend Lake, Kaskaskia, and Southwestern Illinois
the top two teams move into the NJCAA District Tournament to be hosted by the top-seeded team

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Baseball yesterday – Olney won again at home
the Tigers beat South Central, 11-1 in five innings as Olney outhit the visiting Cougars, 10-0
* Landon Pride and Dylan Hires combined for the five inning shutout – Pride got the win
* Luke Lambird and Lucas Harmon each had two hits and two RBI
* Landon Pride and Mason Kocher each had two hits and a total three runs scored
now at 16-8, the Tigers are scheduled to play at Teutopolis this afternoon

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Softball yesterday – Olney dropped a rescheduled LIC game at home
the Lady Tigers fell to Paris, 5-1 as the visiting Lady Tigers outhit host Olney, 11 to 3
* Taylor LeCrone had Olney’s only extra base hit, a double
* Sophia Colclasure had Olney’s only RBI hit, plus Paige Ginder also singled
Olney is now 16-9 on the year and now 4-3 in the Little Illini Conference
the Lady Tigers have a rescheduled LIC game scheduled for today at Flora

(NEWTON)  the IHSA Bass Fishing Sectionals were this past Saturday and Monday around the state
many of our area teams competed in the Forbes Lake Sectional last Saturday over in Marion County
a total of 14 area schools with 28 teams on the water battling the high winds and dirty water
* the Sectional winners from Teutopolis, Kendall Tabbert & Andy Isley, caught 2 bass at 3.53 total pounds
* Salem’s Christopher Harper and Kaden Hancock were 2nd
* Woodlawn’s Beau Bennett and Jordan Hoppa were 3rd
these top three teams now advance to the State Finals coming up at Carlyle Lake in Clinton County
* Teutopolis’ Jared Bloemer and Noah Pals were 4th
* Robinson’s Cam Neese, Jason Meeks, and Hunter Givens were 5th
* Centralia’s Drew Wehking and Jared Brothers were 6th
* Newton’s Hunter Michl, Draven Zuber, Dawson Ervin, and Ryan Hagen were 7th
* South Central’s Ryan McCown and Cauy (Coy) Blomberg were 8th
* Wayne City’s Donovan Lee and Hayden Guyer were 9th

* the Big Bass of the Day weighed in at 2.85 pounds, caught by Salem’s Kaden Hancock
the IHSA has announced the Bass Fishing State Finals on May 19th and 20th have been postponed
* it’s due to extremely dangerous high water levels on Carlyle Lake – no new dates have been set so far

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls Junior High Track at this past Monday’s Class L Regional at Centralia
Mt. Carmel won the eight team event by beating out 2nd place Salem, 109 to 92
* Olney finished 3rd with 61 points, followed by Centralia (49), Fairfield (48), and Flora (46)
* rounding out the other teams were Carmi (44) and Carlyle (13)
the 3rd place Lady Cubs had four 2nd and one 3rd place finishes, all advancing to the Class L State Meet
* Maria Mayorga was 2nd in the long jump and 2nd in the 100 meter dash
* Allison Harness, Bentley Farris, Adrielle Smith, and Carley Greenwood / 2nd in the 1600 meter relay
* Madelyn Rusk, Jocelyn VanMatre, Maria Mayorga, & Kristen Greenwood / 2nd in the 800 meter relay
* Madelyn Rusk, Korbyn Foster, Rae’Isha Shotwell, and Maria Mayorga / 3rd in the 400 meter relay

the 3rd place Cubs won one event, had one 2nd, one 3rd, and one 4th to qualify for the State Meet
* Jonas Burckhartt won the pole vault
* Gavin Kirby, Barak Berger, Jonas Burckhartt, and Jacob Taylor / 2nd in the 1600 meter relay
* Garrett Wright, Dylan Reed, Jacob Taylor, and Saul Jones / 3rd in the 400 meter relay
* Gavin Kirby was 4th in the 1600 meter run

(OLNEY)  the Olney Tiger and Lady Tiger Track Teams will host the first-ever Little Tiger Track & Field Meet on this coming Saturday morning, May 13th, from 9:00 to 11:00, at the Richland County High School Track in Olney – all Kindergarten thru 5th grade students are invited to take part in various events, including sprints, distance running, hurdles, the long jump, and shot put (softball throw) – the event will include instruction by Olney Tiger / Lady Tiger athletes and coaches, plus there will be grade-level competition, & the event will end with a Family Mile Fun Walk – registration forms will be accepted until 8:45 Saturday morning at the RCHS Track – the cost is at $10 per child – all kids are welcomed – this event is open to all Kindergarten thru 5th grade students at both RCES and the St. Joseph School

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County High School is providing the opportunity for sports’ physicals at a cost of $25 per athlete – the date for boys is this Thursday morning from 10:00 to 12:00 – remember that sports physicals are good for one calendar year and all athletes are required to have an up-to-date physical on file in the RCHS office – for more information or details, contact the Athletic office at RCHS

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Soccer – the IHSA Class 1A Regionals began around the state
at the regional hosted by Richland County High School on Ed Webber Field at Olney Central College
* the host Lady Tigers had their season end as they fought hard but fell to Breese Mater Dei, 4-2
Olney’s goals were scored by Nadja Schwarz
also great play by Stephanie Shan, Paige Ginder, and Lauren Hill – Olney ends the year at 2-10-2
* in the other semi-final match – Roxana beat Salem, 9-0

the Tigers beat Harrisburg, 7-4 as Olney outhit the visiting Bulldogs, 9 to 7
* Braden Adams was the winning pitcher, allowing two earned runs and striking out three
* Trey Puckett led Olney with two singles, a double, and three RBI
* Mason Kocher had a two RBI double and Luke Lambird had two hits and a run scored
now at 15-8 on the year, the Tigers are back in action today when they host South Central

* Nate Meinhart was Newton’s winning pitcher, giving up only one earned run and striking out three
* Mitch Jansen led the Eagles with a three RBI hit – Noah Wagy singled, doubled, and had two RBI
