(ROBINSON)  in Boys High School Basketball last night – the LIC Conference Tournament began
it was the first of thirteen games to be played at the High School in Robinson – a play-in game
* 8th-seeded Paris beat 9th-seeded Flora, 55-44
the Tournament’s four quarter-final games are slated for this afternoon and evening
* top-seeded Marshall will play the Paris at 3:00 this afternoon
* 4th-seeded Olney will play 5th-seeded Red Hill at 4:30 this afternoon
* 2nd-seeded Robinson will play 7th-seeded Casey-Westfield at 6:00 this evening
* and 3rd-seeded Lawrenceville will play 6th-seeded Newton at 7:30 tonight
it’s a single elimination round game next Monday night
then the semi-final games in the winner’s and consolation brackets are next Tuesday & Wednesday nights
and the Tournament’s final three games for fifth, third, and first will be next Friday night in Robinson

the Tigers will host eight other downstate teams during the event in Ron Herrin Gym at RCHS

the Wrestling Tigers enter today’s home event with a successful start to the 2016-2017 season
* the Tigers are 9-0 in dual meets this year with tournament championships at Lawrenceville & Cumberland

(MARSHALL)  in Girls High School Basketball last night at the LIC Conference Tournament
it was the Newton Lady Eagles coming away with the third place trophy with a 43-34 win over Olney
* Newton was led by Grace Hartrich with another double/double, with 16 points and 12 rebounds
* Abby Frohning had 13 points and 9 rebounds for the Lady Eagles, who improve to 17-6 on the year
* Olney’s only double digit scorer was Julie Luna with 14 points – Lauren Eagleson had 8 rebounds

* Marshall held on to win the championship game over Paris, 43-37
* Flora won the consolation championship 5th place game over Lawrenceville, 46-37

the Cubs lost the 8th grade game to Red Hill, 49-43 – the varsity is now 12-7 overall, 2-1 in the Junior NEC
* Braden Flanagan led Olney with 30 points – Zach Duenas had 6 points and 7 rebounds
Olney won the 7th grade game, 44-30 as the junior varsity is 13-4, now 3-0 in the Junior NEC

the Saints lost the 8th grade game at Clay City, 58-55
* St. Thomas was led by Mason Schafer with 20 points
St. Thomas won the 7th grade game, 42-27
the 7th Grade Saints will be in Regional action tomorrow against Windsor at St. Michael’s School in Sigel
in fact, the IESA upstate Boys 7th Regionals begin tomorrow throughout the state

 

(OLNEY)  congratulations to pair of Olney free throw shooters who did well last weekend
it was at the District Elks Hoop Shoot that was held in Salem last Saturday for downstate girls and boys
* Olney’s Mikaela Inskeep won the District’s 12-13 year old girls division
* Mikaela now advances to the State Hoop Shoot competition coming up on February 25th in Decatur
* Holden Hough finished 2nd in the District’s 12-13 year old boys division, but did not advance to state
although Olney’s other four shooters did not advance to state, congratulations on making it to District
* they include Taylor Johnson, Jorri VanDyke, Guiseppe Trupiano, and Kaden Thomas

(MT. CARMEL)  Wabash Valley College will host a softball camp on two consecutive Saturdays in Mt. Carmel, January 28th and February 4th - its hitting and fielding each Saturday from 10:00 to 12:30 and pitching each Saturday afternoon from 12:30 to 3:15 - for girls ages 7 to 17, the camp will be held in the Spencer Sports Center Gym - the cost varies from $35, $60, or $80 depending on the selection of camp portions - players should bring ball gloves and tennis shoes while bats are optional - the concession stand will be open for drinks and snacks - the registration deadline is today, this January 20th - call Wabash Valley College at  618-262-8641, extension 3394, or go online at  www.wvcwarriorsathletics.com

the Blue Knights beat Lake Land, 85-81 as OCC improves to 9-8 overall, now 1-6 in the GRAC
* Gilwan Nelson led OCC with 19 points and Erikas Jakstys poured in 15 points
* Devonte Myles had a double/double with 13 points and 12 rebounds
the Blue Knights are back in action at home Saturday at 3:00 when they host Southeastern Illinois

Illinois falls to 12-7 on the year, now 2-4 in the Big Ten Conference
the Illini are back in action Saturday afternoon as they’ll play the Wolverines at Michigan

* Julie Luna led the Lady Tigers with 28 points and 7 rebounds

* St. Joseph-Ogden was 4th (135), then Lawrenceville (124), Fithian Oakwood (103.5), Monticello (93.50)
* Sparta was 8th (93), then Charleston (91), Shelbyville (86.50), Mt. Olive (84), and Carlyle (77)
* Robinson was 13th (75), then Hillsboro (55), Warrensburg-Latham (24), Effingham (23.5)

the Junior Lady Eagles won the 8th grade match over Marshall in two sets, 25-15 and 25-15

it was the tournament’s first elimination round game
* Lawrenceville eliminated Red Hill, 68-36
the tournament continues with the two winner’s bracket semi-final games tonight
* top-seeded Paris plays 5th-seeded Olney at 6:00
* then 2nd-seeded Marshall plays 3rd-seeded Newton at 7:30
the tournament’s consolation bracket semi-finals are tomorrow night
the tournament’s final three games will be Thursday night, for fifth, third, and the championship

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Basketball – the National Trail Conference Tournament began yesterday
postponed from Saturday, there were six games played at Beecher City High, beginning with a play-in game
* 9th-seeded South Central upset 8th-seeded Dieterich, 41-33
then the tournament’s quarter-final games were played from the bottom of the bracket up
* 2nd-seeded Altamont beat 7th-seeded Cowden-Herrick / Beecher City, 64-16
* 3rd-seeded Neoga beat 6th-seeded North Clay, 56-45
* 5th-seeded Windsor / Stewardson-Strasburg upset 4th-seeded Brownstown / St. Elmo, 54-31
* and top-seeded Effingham St. Anthony beat South Central, 36-19
in the tournament’s first elimination round game in consolation play
* Cowden-Herrick / Beecher City eliminated Dieterich, 68-44
the tournament continues with the winner’s bracket semi-finals tomorrow night
then two consolation bracket semi-finals Thursday night before the final four games Saturday night

* Mt. Carmel beat Fairfield, 59-37
in games scheduled for this Tuesday night at Carmi
* Harrisburg plays Mt. Carmel at 6:00
* the host Bulldogs from Carmi will play Mt. Vernon, Indiana at 7:30
the tournament continues Thursday and Friday before ending Saturday night

there were two first round games, played at the higher seeded sites

* Grayville beat Sandoval, 87-29
the tournament continues with quarter-final action tonight, also at the higher seeded sites
* top-seeded Wayne City will host 8th-seeded Christ Our Rock Lutheran
* 2nd-seeded Waltonville will host 7th-seeded Grayville
* 3rd-seeded Webber Township will host 6th-seeded Odin down in Bluford
* and 4th-seeded Woodlawn will host 5th-seeded Cisne
the tournament continues each night thru Saturday with the remaining games at Wayne City High School

* Greenville beat Lebanon, 62-36
* Pana beat East Alton Wood River, 67-47
* Nokomis beat Litchfield, 52-22
* Metro East Lutheran beat Roxana, 62-49
the tournament has four more games tonight, tomorrow night, and Friday night – the finals are on Saturday

* the Saints lost the 8th grade game to Hutsonville, 42-24
* St. Thomas won the 7th grade game over Hutsonville, 31-27
the Saints are back in action tomorrow night when they host Olney St. Joe in Newton
