(SPRINGFIELD) Illinois has the second-highest return rate in the nation for the U.S. Census of Agriculture. Illinois was leading all other states until just last week when Iowa took over the top spot. Behind Illinois with the third highest return rate was Idaho. USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) wants surveys completed by February 5, next Monday. The 24-page questionnaire can be submitted online or by mail and at last check, more than 25,000 questionnaires had been returned as of last Friday, about half of which were completed online. The census requests information about a variety of topics, from land use practices, crop insurance and government program participation to use of fertilizers, chemicals, and farm labor. New questions this year attempt to capture changing farming demographics, including Veterans, women, and new and beginner farmers.
