(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and all local EMA’s are encouraging everyone to take time to be ready for weather or other emergencies in 2018. Each month this year, IEMA & the EMA’s will provide information on various preparedness or safety topics, including severe & winter weather, earthquakes, radiation, school & campus safety, cyber security, and more. One of the first steps toward emergency preparedness is having an emergency supply kit stocked with basic survival items that are critical during an emergency. (CHARLESTON) Eastern Illinois University officials say their enrollment this spring is up 5% compared to a year ago. EIU says the total enrollment is at 7,016 students, up from 6,673 in the spring of 2017. EIU administrators believe the increase is due to a multi-year plan designed to counteract challenges such as the state’s previous budget stalemate. With the plan, programs have been added even though EIU had to lay off some 400 staff members over the past year. Officials say the bulk of this spring’s enrollment increase is due to undergraduate transfer students coming to Charleston, a number that climbed from 260 last year to 1,335.
