(SPRINGFIELD) Farmers enrolled a record number of acres in the federal crop insurance program last year. The numbers from the National Crop Insurance Service show the 311 million acres in Illinois roughly equals the size of California, Texas, and New York combined. The statistics show insurers backed more than $106 billion worth of crops in 2017, up $6 billion since 2016. Illinois farmers paid $3.7 billion for crop insurance protection, a more than $250 million increase from the previous year. The NCIS says crop insurance protects about 90 percent of insurable land and more than 130 different types of crops.
