(SPRINGFIELD) An Illinois bill would allow Veterans organizations to install gambling machines in communities that would otherwise prohibit the games. The Video Gaming Act would allow the State Gaming Board to license such Veterans establishments around the state, which proponents say would help American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and all other Veterans groups that are financially struggling as membership dwindles. However, some local leaders say the bill is an intrusion on local control. While the State Senate has already approved the legislation, the bill has been referred to the House Rules Committee.
(SPRINGFIELD) Governor Bruce Rauner has declared today as “Crossing Guard Appreciation Day” in Illinois, all in recognition of the vital role these public servants play in ensuring that children throughout the state can walk and bike to and from school safely. Not only do crossing guards help students learn safe pedestrian habits, such as looking both ways before stepping into the road and walking bikes across the street, but they also serve as an additional warning to motorists, reminding them to slow down in school zones when children are crossing.
