(OLNEY/NEWTON) In Monday’s USDA Crop Report, Illinois experienced rain and cooler temperatures around the state last week with an average of 3.2 days suitable for fieldwork. The statewide average rainfall last week was 2.26 inches, which was 1.28 inches above normal. Last week’s average temperature around Illinois was 74.8 degrees, just over 1 degree (1.2) above normal. As of this past Sunday, the state’s corn crop is still over 80% in good to excellent conditions with silking starting to take place. And while the bean crop is nearly 80% in good to excellent shape around the state, well over two-thirds of Illinois’ winter wheat crop has been harvested : farmers in our ten county area report much the same, although some localized flooding is causing problems in certain spots. Farmers are reminded to make “farm safety” a priority.
