(NEWTON/OLNEY) Area authorities are once again alerting downstate residents with another “scam report.” The scammers are calling local and regional folks, pretending to be with various types of law enforcement or from government offices on the local, state, and federal level. Within the telephone calls, the scammers are threatening residents with arrest, fines, jail time, lawsuits, and the closing of personal accounts unless the victim can verify their Social Security number and/or bank account or credit card account number (s). Folks are reminded that such calls are not how law enforcement and government offices do business, so DO NOT fall for the threats. Folks are reminded to never give out their Social Security number and/or personal banking or credit card information. Folks are encouraged to spread the word to their elderly family and friends, who are most likely the main targets of these particular scams. Area residents can contact their local law enforcement agencies and/or banking institutions if any questions or concerns.
