(EFFINGHAM) The Illinois State Police District 12, based in Effingham, is joining forces with agencies statewide for the 2018 Illinois Speed Awareness Day Campaign coming up tomorrow, July 25th. It’s a proactive approach to promote safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists through both education and enforcement. Crashes can be prevented & lives can be saved by being aware of our speed & understanding how speeding impacts a crash. Experts say speed was the cause of 34 percent of all traffic deaths in Illinois in 2015, the last year statistics are available. This equates to 369 deaths, about one every day in Illinois alone. Last year on Speed Awareness Day, State Troopers handed out about 3,000 tickets for speeding with more than 2,200 warnings. The Illinois State Police will be out in extra force tomorrow from early to late looking for those driving too fast.
