(CHICAGO) Governor Bruce Rauner told exhibitors attending the largest manufacturing trade show in America that Illinois remains an ideal home for companies that are looking for a highly skilled workforce and a transportation infrastructure that is unmatched in its ability to support worldwide distribution. The Governor made his remarks yesterday during his visit to the International Manufacturing Technology Show taking place this week at McCormick Place in Chicago. Rauner noted that Illinois’ total manufacturing output in 2016 was over $100 billion with exports worth some $55 billion. About 600,000 Illinoisans are employed by manufacturers with more than 1,900 foreign firms with a presence of some kind in Illinois.
(CARBONDALE/CHAMPAIGN) Enrollment is continuing a steep decline at Southern Illinois University’s Carbondale campus, with nearly 12% fewer students this fall semester. This drops follows a 9% drop last year in 2017 and a 7.5% drop two years ago in 2016. The Carbondale enrollment is about half of its 1991 peak of 24,869 students. Meanwhile, the University’s Edwardsville campus reported a 3.7% drop in enrollment this fall following a slight increase a year ago. Further north, the University of Illinois says it has a system-wide record number of students enrolled for the fall semester, including an eighth straight year of record enrollment at its main campus in Champaign-Urbana. With an overall growth of 2.7% to nearly 85,600 students at all three of the University’s campuses, the main campus in Champaign-Urbana grew by 3.2%, the Chicago campus was up 3.7%, but the Springfield campus enrollment dropped 7.7%. The U of I says the Champaign-Urbana campus has its most in-state freshmen in the past 10 years.
(SPRINGFIELD) Hunters and trappers throughout Illinois can now apply for a 2018-2019 Bobcat Hunting & Trapping Permit online through Sunday, September 30. Applicants must submit a $5 non-refundable fee as a total of one thousand (1,000) permits will be allocated during a lottery & then mailed to the successful applicants. The season dates are November 10, 2018, through February 15, 2019, however the season will close early if the harvest limit of 375 bobcats is reached. The bobcat hunting is closed during the firearm deer season. To apply, hunters can logon at the permit system website, at www.il.wildlifelicense.com.
