(SPRINGFIELD) In yesterday’s USDA Crop Report, there were 6.0 days suitable on average for fieldwork in Illinois last week. The statewide average temperature last week was 72.3 degrees, 9.0 full degrees above normal. Last week’s average precipitation in Illinois was 0.45 inches, nearly four tenths of an inch (0.39) below normal. As of this past Sunday, 28% of the state’s corn crop had been harvested, with 85% of the corn in Illinois rated as mature. With 17% of the state’s soybeans now harvested, 75% of the statewide beans are dropping leaves. Illinois’ sorghum harvest is at 14% complete : farmers in our ten county area surrounding Olney/Newton report much the same with over a third (33%) of the local corn crop and about 10% of the local soybeans now harvested. Farmers are reminded to stay safe out there during the harvest.
