(SPRINGFIELD) In yesterday’s USDA Crop Report, there were 5.5 days suitable on average for fieldwork last week in Illinois. The statewide average precipitation last week was just under one inch (0.95), nearly a quarter of an inch (0.24) above normal. Last week’s average temperature in Illinois was 61.0 degrees, almost 1 (0.8) degree below normal. As of Sunday, 48% of the state’s corn crop had been harvested with 96% of the Illinois corn crop now mature. 35% of the statewide soybean crop is harvested with 87% of the beans dropping leaves. 33% of Illinois’ sorghum has been cut with 86% of the milo now mature. Farmers here in our ten county area surrounding Olney/Newton report much the same with over half of the local corn crop and over a third of the local soybean crop harvested. Farmers and their workers are reminded to think “safety first” as the 2018 fall harvest continues throughout all of south central and southeastern Illinois.
