(SPRINGFIELD) In yesterday’s USDA Crop Report, there were 3.1 days on average suitable for fieldwork in Illinois last week. The statewide average temperature was 48.3 degrees, 1.6 degrees below normal. Last week’s average rainfall in Illinois was 1.53 inches, nearly two thirds of an inch (0.64) above normal. Both the topsoil and subsoil moisture supplies are rated at or over 90% adequate to surplus around the state. As of Sunday, 93% of the Illinois corn crop had been harvested with 92% of the soybeans and 89% of the grain sorghum harvested. Farmers here in our ten area counties surrounding Olney/Newton report 95% of the local corn and over 93% of the local soybeans have been harvested with most of the intended acreage for wheat now sown. Farmers are reminded to think “safety first” as harvest and cleanup activities continue.
