The First United Methodist Church in Olney will host a special event this coming Sunday evening. It’s a live nativity scene from 4:30 to 6:00 with the serving of soup and sandwiches in the fellowship hall with all the proceeds from the fundraiser to benefit the church’s Youth Program. All to be followed by the church’s Christmas Program and Carol Sing at around 6:15. All are invited to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
The Indiana Rail Road’s Santa Train will be making area stops this coming Sunday, December 2. From 9:00 to 10:30 in Newton, from 11:15 to 12:45 in Oblong, and from 1:30 to 3:00 in Palestine. All area children, even adult children, are invited to come aboard to see the train and give Santa their wish list.
The Sailor Springs American Legion Post 230 will host a “deer hunter’s lunch” this coming Saturday, December 1, with serving from 10:00 to 2:00. The menu includes chili, vegetable soup, sloppy joes, hot dogs, desserts, and drinks. All deer hunters and others are invited. For details, call 618-508-3962.
Hospice of Southeastern Illinois will have its annual Cookie Walk and Festival of Trees this coming Saturday morning, December 1, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, from 9:00 to 12:00 noon. It will include a delicious assortment of holiday cookies and candies, plus a dazzling array of two foot trees and decorated wreaths featuring a variety of themes, which will be sold by a silent auction bid format. All proceeds help provide care and support to terminally ill patients and their families throughout thirteen area counties.
The Life Café in Newton is still accepting donations for its “Share the Warmth Drive” through this coming Saturday, December 1. All blankets, coats, hats, gloves, and other items are being accepted to help those in need in Newton and throughout Jasper County. Contact The Life Café if any questions.
The Mt. Gilead Church north and west of Olney, will host “The Bethlehem Walk” this weekend for public viewing. Everyone is encouraged to load up the family and check it out. It’s tomorrow night from 6:00 to 8:00, then Saturday and Sunday nights from 5:00 to 8:00. Includes animals and much more.
It’s another “taco night” this coming Friday night at the Olney VFW with serving from 5:30 to 7:30. The RCHS Spanish Club students who are traveling to Spain next summer will be fundraising with a “bake sale” and the 50/50 raffle. All are invited out to either eat in or order in advance to carry-out.
Don’t forget it’s Moonlight Madness this coming Friday night in Olney with many of our local stores open late with various specials, deals, and fun. Get out and check the Olney Christmas Lights Display in the Olney City Park. The display is available from 5:00 to 9:00 on Sundays through Thursdays and from 5:00 to 10:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. That’s each night, now through New Year’s Eve, December 31. Also, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for visits by children this Friday and Saturday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 in the City Park Community Building.
