(OLNEY/NEWTON) A couple of notes from downstate authorities. First, reports are coming in of a scam where people received calls from what the callers claim is the Apple Smart Phone Customer Care telephone number. Those receiving the call are instructed then to call another phone number, at which time the scammers access the victims phone and personal information. Authorities and Apple officials are warning smart phone owners not to call the second number. Anyone who needs assistance should reach out to the company’s customer support. A second report is of counterfeit money being passed at regional banks and businesses in Southeastern Illinois. Most of the instances have involved fake $20 bills being passed. While law enforcement agencies continue to investigate, businesses are encouraged to use their counterfeit marker pens and look closely at all bills being passed. If any questions, the local police should be contacted.
